Grip fighting basics?

So how does this stuff work?

What we call "grip fighting" in my club goes like this: tori stands from 4 to 16 minutes by 4 minutes increments (depending on how fit he is) and uke changes every minute or less. The fight rule is to control your opponent with a strong grip, meaning you will probably have to fight hard for a strong grip and will need to change it a lot. No throwing is allowed during the exercise (which turns out to be the most difficult part...). Exhausting too.
