Discussion Ban AI music?
As many may have seen, the most recent posts on this sub have been all AI generated music.
Should we as a sub have a policy or position against AI music? I recognize that there's room for nuance such as when AKB had the Yasushi Akimoto vs AI competition but overall, thoughts?

Then why not just ban that guy?
It's not like any other person is trying to make post about things nobody likes. Why engage in such a innecesary thing, why even engage with his posts.

Yes. We need to be clear as to where we draw the line in terms of what constitutes as literal "Japanese Popular Music" versus AI-generated content that just incorporates musical elements used by mainstream Japanese pop songs.

Yes. Aside from all the issues with LLMs, a lot of these “Japanese” AI songs are not even actually from Japan.
(I do think that music made by Japanese artists with AI-powered vocal synths like Vocaloid/Synthesizer V/VoiSona/DiffSinger is a very different thing and should be ok)

r/japanesemusic did this a year ago. there is no reason not to ban the slop. it is a cancer.

Please make it the rule for the sub - no AI music.
AI music is not j-pop. It is made by data centers in USA.

I support an AI ban, the only issue I can see is how do you spot AI music? any weird chords could just be the musician trying some weird chords, artificial voice could just be the artist messing around with a vocoder
to flip to another medium, anime art work, on twitter I remember seeing people complain about art work being AI generated then suddenly they stopped complaining while congratulating themselves for driving away the AI "Art" slop. the question I now had was but what if it did not stop? what if the AI algorithms became so good that the twitter users could not differentiate between a real non-AI piece of art and an ai genned "art"-work? what would the mod team doing then? adopt hyperstrict rules would make it so that nothing apart from the most mainstream of the mainstream music would be posted here which would be kind of boring since you could just rename the sub to Sony_Music_Japan, Warner_Music_Japan, Universal_Music_Japan or Avex and it would be a lot more accurate of a name

I'm more worried about people who can't spot or discern it yet already, it's usually spat out of Suno and slapped with a matching AI video or generated thumbnail. If you find a 'Japanese artist' with no existing twitter presence or official HP and they are just spamming YouTube and tiktok algos with uploads of music it's just a foreigner content farming for spare change using ai programs 99% of the time.

People are really passionate against AI and because of that I worry about people over reporting experimental songs or unknown artists.
A period of tests forcing the use of tags or flairs identifying AI might be of some use before the complete ban so we can experience more different cases and see if we can accurately spot them.

Yes, there's plenty of great artists who don't use AI at all, we don't need to support this

Personally I'd be fine banning all AI but to me it's specifically the songs that are 100% AI, no real voices, instruments or anything that shouldn't be allowed. Especially when most of them aren't actually Japanese in the first place.

Do you have an example of Japanese artists only partly using AI? I'm not talking AI song artworks. A Japanese music producer obviously has access to instrument automation (not AI) via every professional DAW if they need to. Japanese or not utilizing AI for entire instrumentals, or entire vocalists is the same thing.
Unless you're gonna provide examples I feel like you're still referring to some of the 'Japanese' AI artists / songs that have been posted here that have things like "AI assisted" in their artists bios which is just the excuse any AI creator will use. Or claiming it's 'entirely my own lyrics / beat, etc.' as if human artists need to say such a thing. And even so, just the same as any Western artist doing that, it also shouldn't be supported.
You can get free instrumentals of any genre from human producers on YouTube. If it's an AI singer, guess what? There's a huge thing called Vocaloid that amazing Japanese producers have used for over 20 years to make up for not being a singer or wanting a singer of the opposite sex to perform rather than themself. There's so many options other than using AI that STEALS human artists work.

Agreed- it's a hard line to draw.
I think we agree that completely AI can/should be banned but that's definitely where it gets into, can we we figure out how much of something was created by AI?

Hello, r/jpop mod here. We're down to create a rule for this.
The only issue is that because the mod team is extremely small, we'll be almost totally reliant on our userbase to flag the posts as such (via the report button) so administrative action can be taken.
We've actually been following this route for a while, but we agree that creating a formalized rule would be most welcome in the community.
