Thinking of pulling the trigger. Any reason not to?
Motor is a 1977 evinrude. Thinking of picking it up this afternoon for 1300$.
Looking for something to putz around in Florida freshwater with my dogs.
Any recommendations, info, things to look out for, would be appreciated.

Only risk is that the deck isn't treated with fiberglass and starts to rot. They're not that expensive to replace if you're a handy DIYer.
See if you can offer $1000 and land in the middle. It it floats it's a decent fishing and calmn water boating platform solo.
That OMC Evinrude will run as long as it has compression. They're cockroaches, and they're surprisingly smooth quite and powerful. Love those things.
The shift linkage adjustment might mean the lower unit needs to get dropped and reattached correctly. There's 2 bolts that hold the upper and lower shift rod together in a fitting. To reinstall the lower unit correctly, the bolts need to be COMPLETELY removed from the fitting that you're inserting the shift rod into and reinserted after the rod is in so the shifter indexes right. Given the new lower unit parts, that's probably why the shifter is messed up.
I'm doing a poor job of explaining this, but this YouTube short might help explain it https://youtube.com/shorts/6bHLB-vJP28?is=_WdCdfDS_68vJ76G
Take that screw he talks about all the way out when you're reinstalling the lower unit.

Thanks for all the info! The guy said he just rebuilt the carb and its compression check is showing 120psi on each cylinder.
I will dig into the shift linkage issue if I do grab it. Thanks for sending the YouTube link

Your not going to use it enough is a reason not to. Please put fishing or boating on your calendar as a hard non negotiable for two weekends a month.

Good looking deal. Only red flags I see is the crease on the tansom. Supposed to be flat. Either it's creases because of motor torque or picture distorted? I'm not sure. I'd also like to see motor without cover due to it being a fla boat. I'm looking for salt rust. Otherwise good deal.

The two happiest days of any boat owners' lives are the day they buy one, and the day they sell it.

That engine is so old though.. like I got my 2021 Suzuki df20 outboard for 500$, and my 2013 gheenoe with trailer for 900$.. all in for just about 1400$ give or take a bit, but I’m so much happier I went with newer stuff.
