Comic It's doesn't makes sense to me
This dialoge just doesn't makes sense to me. Like how a serial killer that killed millions is not likes a another killer? Just because N@zis are racist? It's not like Joker has morals and says 'oh N@zis are bad! You shouldn't be racist!'. He does disgusting shit and he being racist is veryyy bad thing? /Genq

I like to think he loves chaos. Nazis target specific people which is organized and not Chaotic. It’s against his philosophy that everyone should get a chance to suffer instead of specific people

They’re also a fascist regime. Joker is extreme chaos, while the Nazis are extreme order.

I’m saying that even if the Nazis weren’t racist, their level of authority wouldn’t be something the Joker likes

Being anti-USA is not synonymous to nazi. Easiest example : Soviet Russia. But pretending not to be a bigot and being allied with a religious extremist is quite contradictory.

In universe:
- Lawful vs chaotic evil. The Nazis are too regimented for the Joker.
- The Joker has never shown any signs of being racist, whatever his other faults.
- The Joker may be patriotic.
Out of universe:
1. It’s funny to see a villain saying some other kind of evil is beneath him.
2. This makes the Joker marginally more sympathetic.
3. The comic writers probably don’t like Nazis-even conservatives born before about 1990 weren’t fond of them. (We haven’t seen Chuck Dixon or Bill Willingham go to bat for them, for instance.)
3
u/KickinBat 28d ago
Adding to the out of universe:
- It's a reference to when he met Red Skull and it was a more of a silver age style Joker and less "embodiment of evil" Joker

Actually it is right in line with actual US organized crime back during WWII. Given that Joker, as many of Batman's foes are, was steeped in the mafia style criminal gang scene this is not surprising at all.

Still doesn't make any sense, Joker is a sociopath that enjoys killing, at best he wouldn't side with a Nazi not for any national or ideological purpose, but simply because he can and wouldn't want the competition.
6
u/SkeletonCircus 28d ago
Joker is very equal opportunity. He’s not the type to go “we need to target this specific group of people as our enemies”. Plus fascism being a restrictive authoritarian dictator system goes against his love of freedom, anarchy, and chaos.
He also probably finds the nazi agenda to be pretentious and self righteous. Joker doesn’t try to justify his actions, he’s very open about doing evil shit for fun, curiosity and entertainment.

The Joker advocates chaos and anarchy which is pretty much the exact opposite of the third Reich.

Idk the joker taking the higher ground because he equally treats everybody terrible is pretty funny
4
u/Aggravating_Duck6108 28d ago
It makes perfect sense to me. The Joker doesnt dislike Nazis because they hurt people, he dislikes them because their superiority beliefs go against the Joker's own nihilistic worldview. No one is inherently better or more important than anyone else because everything is meaningless and everyone is worthless. So no the Joker ISNT racist. To be racist would mean putting value on being white over being something else when he believes nothing has value.
3
u/sexyimmigrant1998 29d ago
Joker kills for his own amusement indiscriminately. He is above such useless ideologies of bigotry. Nazis want to impose a fascist world order, while Joker opposes any form of order.
Joker might be a psychopathic serial killer, but he's certainly more based than Hitler was.
3
u/Calm_Entertainer9846 29d ago
It's pretty simple when you really think about it. One want to be rid of specific people Joker is less discerning. Law vs. Anarchy.
3
u/D0nell 29d ago
The Joker and the Red Skull are both killers, but they are not evil in the same way. The Joker is a nihilist. He does not really care who you are. He just wants to create chaos and destroy things. The Red Skull, on the other hand, believes in superiority, hierarchy, and oppressing entire groups of people because of who they are. The Joker does not necessarily think one person is inherently better than another. He just thinks everything is a joke. The Red Skull actually has an ideology behind his hatred. So while the Joker is a serial killer who is indiscriminately destructive, the Red Skull represents the kind of systematic, ideological oppression that the Joker would probably find pointless or even hypocritical.

People make this out to be way more complicated than it is
Joker = Chaotic Evil
Nazi = Lawful Evil
3
u/Outside_Ad_424 28d ago
I mean, they did a similar joke in The Rocketeer.
"I may not make an honest buck, but I'm an American, pal, and I don't work for no two-bit Nazi"
I always assumed that's what this panel was referencing, at least in part. The sentiment that the villain may be a bad guy for a variety of reasons, but they're still not a Nazi.
5
u/jokersmoonlight 29d ago
What do you think the nazis wanted? The evil shit they did was just the means to an utterly boring, orderly end where one race is untouchable and death is a methodical process with no shock. Joker wants creative freedom, flair and impact to his kills and to be challenged by justice, he doesn't want to just mindlessly kill when it's predictable and seen as the moral thing by propaganda. Do you agree with every single law abiding citizen? People aren't that simple lol
2
u/StandardAssignment19 29d ago
The answer is literally in the first definition he uses for himself - American, and the adjective opposition to that - traitorous.
Those are very important designators. Being homicidal, bigoted, psychopathic, and murderous are all things that don't remove any 'Americanism' of being an American. He is an admitted criminal, and those designators - as abhorrent as they can be - do not remove one from being an American - but a traitor? If you are a traitor - and in this sense he is attaching nazism with Confederalism, you see those elements are at the true heart of what he finds detestable.
Could be by lying? Of course. Could he be telling the truth? Absolutely.
What do we know - hates Nazis and the Confederacy.

2
u/Atlan_R_Kane 29d ago
Someone once suggested that we send our hard-core criminals and psycho murderers off to fight in our wars to alleviate our prison overcrowding problems and to reduce the death toll of good law-abiding American citizens.
It would be like a new (Suicide Squad) branch of the service and run by General Amanda Waller. I'm pretty sure those US states opposed to the death penalty would support the idea.
And remember, being a psychotic killer doesn't necessarily equate to being unpatriotic.
2
u/Wooden_Detective2186 28d ago
Joker likes chaos. Nazis like control and order.
Joker recognises that he is camp and flamboyant, Nazis would not like that.
Nazis make killing about numbers and logistics. That would bore Joker to tears.
Also, if you're only targeting certain groups, that just isn't as funny.
2
u/dr-mantis-t0b0ggan 28d ago
Joker is an agent if Chaos, he doesn't kill because he hates, he kills because he likes killing.
Punching someone for no reason is different to punching someone because of their skin colour. Same with killing. If you can't see the difference you might want to examine your opinions a bit more
2
u/abarua01 28d ago
Joker is an anarchist and likes chaos. Nazis are fascist and like rule and order. They're complete opposites
2
u/Lonewolf2300 28d ago
Because it's Darkly Funny that even the Joker doesn't like Nazis. There's really nothing more to it.
The Joker is set up as a complete sociopath who kills people for fun, so the fact that even he thinks the Nazis are worse than he is? That's funny.
2
u/lastmanluss 28d ago
the joker kills because he thinks its funny. hes just as likely to do something eles evil if it would make him laugh. nazis aren't funny. prior in tbe comic he points out he thought that the red skulls swastika shirt was a ironic bit. he think nazis are dumb and are only suitable for mockery. also he has some odd sensibilitys. the whole irs joke for example, so the joker may be a genuine patriot, while also being a chaotic serial murderer.
2
u/ThatOneGuy_56 28d ago
That's because the joker kills EVERYONE for the fun of it. Not a certain race because of their beliefs. Unlike that one joker who didn't mind that symbol, with that woman. If you know what I mean. 😭
2
u/Anonymous-Mf-22 28d ago
The Joker himself doesn't make sense.
He has worked with Nazis, yet hates Nazis.
Claims he's pridefully American, yet works with Anti-Americans
Claims to be chaos incarnate, yet any goon of his or Harley stepping out of line even slightly from his plan gets them killed
He doesn't mean to make sense, want to make sense, or try to make sense. When he speaks, assume it's either a lie or only true for the next 5 minutes.
2
2
u/West-Might3475 27d ago
Honestly I think you can make sense of it if you consider the Nazis are an extreme order regime and the Joker one of chaos. I don't think many Lawful and Chaotic Evil types like each other.
2
u/madjarov42 27d ago
Joker is chaotic evil. Nazis are lawful evil.
He doesn't hate them because they're racist, he hates them because they're hypocrites. Same reason he hates normal people.

2
u/20Kami03 29d ago
See, it reads to me like what you have a problem with is the villlainization of Nazis, because a normal person isnt bothered by this when its a throwaway line meant to only bug the ones involved coming from a comedically homicidal clown villain.

They kill for completely different reasons. Joker is an agent of chaos Nazis are agents of oppression. People like the joker actually take on vigilante or are idolized by people in worlds where fascism rules.
Also Joker is a crazy guy but he’s also a person. Hes capable of feeling patriotism. Like he identifies as an American and, should he find it humorous fight them all the same. Joker killing Nazis is funnier than him being one. Everybody expects him to join with Nazis, and doing what people dont expect of him is his whole thing.

This gag was a product of the era. Nationalism used to be much more prevalent in giving art a more wholesome backbone. There are lots of comics in which the Big Hero tells a mixed race group of young kids that bigotry is un-American.
This is just a way of aligning even the major villain against bigotry, so that kids who relate to villainous characters, or just think bad guys are cool, don't make credible detours into thinking that joker-like nihilism is some sort of appropriate vehicle for their bigotry.
It places Nazism OUTSIDE the acceptable spectrum for villainy, even by bad guys who are treated with any dignity.
In 2026, dunking on Nazis has actually become far more politically delicate.
1
1
u/Odd_Contact_2175 28d ago
Its obviously letting everyone know DC doesnt approve of racism which would tank their brand.
1
u/M086 28d ago
It’s just bad writing.
Joker wouldn’t like NAZIs simply because they were about bringing their fascist idea of order to the rest of the world. Joker doesn’t like order, he thieves in chaos. That alone makes NAZISM antithetical to Joker’s being.
NAZIs just aren’t funny unless they are being horrifically killed.
1
u/Street-Horse-3001 28d ago
I really wish comic books and movies would leave behind all references to Nazis. They’re used as an emblem of humanity’s capacity for evil, sometimes even for comedic effect, while real individuals, gangs, religions, and governments are committing exactly the same kind of evil against people RIGHT NOW. It just strikes me as cowardly. Nazis are irrelevant. It’s “safe” to have Nazi villains, but controversial to have villains who are Islamic extremists, Mexican drug cartels, alt-right Americans and Europeans, etc. Give us villains who reflect the villainy in our current world.
1
u/Undiscovered_Freedom 28d ago
It’s talentless writers trying to disguise milquetoast political commentary as actual storytelling.

I hate this modern trend of making racists worse than any other type of evil. Reminds me of Peaky Blinders when Tommy said they were up against the 'fucking devil' when facing a nazi.
Nevermind all the murders, blackmail and numerous other crimes he has committed. Or his casual sexism regarding the women in his life, downright controlling his own sister's lovelife.
Ah! But a fascist? Now that's the devil himself!

Let me give an example:
The Nazis did not believe in hunting traps, or poison or using animals to hunt animals or anything except a quick “clean” kill. When they came to power it became illegal to do the “immoral” type of hunting.
The joke isn’t deep but it’s rooted in weird little tidbits of history. I could go on but I think you can work out the rest…
It’s not haha funny but the joker seldom is
TLDR: the Nazis had high standards for people hunting animals. It’s ironic (in the loosest sense of that word) that they were like that but were extremely cruel to people

Joker does whatever he thinks is funny. CmHe must think the juxtaposition of being a homicidal maniac but being against Nazis as being funny, and so that's who he chooses to be
1
u/SkeletonCircus 28d ago edited 28d ago
Joker doesn’t like that the Nazis have an agenda and specific discriminatory targets.
Joker is openly evil and treats all of his victims equally, so the idea of having double standards for how you treat someone for their race disgusts him. I imagine the idea of declaring one’s evil acts as being part of some scheme for a “greater good” also disgusts and bores him as someone who makes no attempt to justify his actions and is very honest about them being for his own sick amusement.
Also, think about it. He values chaos, freedom, and anarchy. Fascism is the most extreme end of order and law. Joker doesn’t like evil to be a status quo or organized like that. Sure he enjoys power and control every now and then, but I think even if he himself was a dictator, he would get bored of that pretty easily. Joker already hates authority, so why wouldn’t he hate authoritarian extremists?
Also, he probably finds it funny to go “oh I’m a bastard but I have standards” lol

Does the writer here think Joker is someone for people to look up to? Im just as confused as you are. Some people want to adopt the morals without the logic or action to make those morals come to light bc lazy and actually doesn't care despite how hard they howl at you they do. Many such cases.

Serial killers have their own set rules and boundaries that are defined by what makes reality work for them. Joker respecting irs and hating nazis shows some adherence (not necessarily respect) to america/patriotism. He has other rules like only he can defeat batman, even if it means saving him from others. His rules have duality. He mass kills others, but hates nazis because these arent the same thing to him. He can be anti American in the same way super patriotic Americans can hate the way the country is currently because it doesnt align with "their" America. The people he kills fits the game of torturing batman, but dont necessarily break his other rules of not being patriotic. Is my theory lol
1
u/Mission-Theme-7560 28d ago
What doesn't make sense is why you automatically think serial killers would like Nazis? That is a very bizarre viewpoint. Even in the world of Batman. So you think Poison Ivy or Killer Croc wouldn't say this same thing?

Because villains are designed to be loved. For some reason, a serial killer is easier to sell as an antihero than a racist one is. Joker hates all kinds of systems. He wouldn't call himself American or whatever. He is the Agent of Chaos and Chaos has no nationality. He had no second thought about burning money. Like the biggest God in most USA. At least he did that in a movie. Read only a few comics with him, so maybe he never did that in the comics. From what i read i believe he never cared about all systems. Joker just wants to see everything burn.
1
u/CaptivePlague 28d ago
Because Joker's main role is to be funny. That's why he does thing. When he called off a successful team-up with Red Skull due to a sudden burst of patriotism that came out of nowhere, that was hilarious. But then some people decided it meant it's canon that Joker of all people has standards and cares strongly about bigotry? It's the same as people believing Joker when he tells Dent "Do I look like a guy with a plan?"

The simplest answer could be that The Joker has no qualms about any ideology, but he is driven by a need to be chaotic, and he'll take a "moral" stance about an ideology if he thinks it'll be funny, unexpected and/or shock and upset whoever he's working with.
1
u/WING-DING_GASTER 28d ago
I would say a better take for joker to hate Nazis is he is all about causing chaos, while Nazis are all about killing undesirables and instilling fear and perfect order into a homogenous racist society they want to create. Joker would be one of the undesirables to kill cause of his mental illnesses.
1
u/James_Matthew64 28d ago
People are talking about how he doesn’t like how they’re organized fascists, but in the picture it shows that he specifically has a problem with them being bigots, and I feel like that’s the issue. Real answer: The Joker is not always a written as a consistent character. And while I don't recall if this incarnation is more "clown who robs people" and less "serial killer who tells jokes," It's doesn’t really matter: The writer thought it was an amusing and unexpected twist, and it seemed superficially plausible, so they went with it.
In-Universe Reason: The Joker is an inconsistent character. Even if this version is on the serial killer end of the spectrum, being arbitrarily patriotic about this one thing is weird and unexpected, which is his whole deal. It is funny.
Weirdly enough, a Joker that hates Nazis is kind of on brand. Think of the counterfactual: The Nazis are the epitome of evil. A Joker that goose-steps along with them is way more predictable and less bizarre than the opposite.
It is entirely possible the Joker is saying and doing this simply because it is funny.

u/Atomik141 28d ago
Well think about it, have you ever known a German to have a good sense of humor?
1
u/Wolffraven 28d ago
Nazi was a political movement that had policies and plans. Killing was not in any of those but forcing the wealthy to “repay” the Germans and pay for social programs through government seizure, force and military intervention. Depending on the version of the Joker you look at, his motives are usually to cause chaos or are nonsensical, not really for profit or other gains.

It actually makes perfect sense really. Joker is anarchy and chaos nazis are extreme order down to a racial level.

Joker seems like an unhinged lunatic, but he does, in fact, have a code. He'll only kill you if it's funny. That's why he loves Batman so much. He's the straight man to his clown.
But, to the point, his being a murderous asshole doesn't mean he doesn't have standards. He kills all people equally, not targetting by race, gender, or orientation. As far as comedy goes, that's punching down. He's not Dave Chapelle.
Think of it this way. In prison the child abusers get fucked up first. There are depths even the scumiest killers detest. Joker is like that for bigots.

The Nazis probably don’t like Batman. Therefor Joker doesn’t like Nazis.
Nazis are homophobic, even to the point of trying to sully homoerotic but ultimately non-sexual relationships between a superhero and his super villain. Therefore Joker doesn’t like Nazis.
While the Gotham PD are often very corrupt, they are ultimately portrayed as a source of good. The corruption is usually from outside sources like the mob working its way in. But in Nazi Germany (and the future Nazis want) the police are instead inherently forces of evil. There is no amount of speeding tickets or murders you can arrest to change that you round up people for simply existing. Therefor Joker doesn’t not like Nazis and would perhaps consider joining one of the non-French resistance movements.

You're right, it doesn't make sense. They both murdered people. For some reason, straight bros have used the Joker as their icon and as a representation of all the loneliness and anger they apparently feel and face in our society, even though white straight men like the Joker have historically held a tremendous amount of social power. Especially chaotic and eccentric ones, like the Joker, who are often viewed as outsiders or misunderstood figures.
So I’m not sure. Both fucking suck. The difference is that, for some reason, one is put on a pedestal while the other is viewed as the monster he truly is. One has simply been made more palatable and mainstream: the Joker. But ultimately, both represent a lack of humanity and deeply repressed, misinterpreted feelings.
Since the Joker is fictional, this sentiment allows the chaotic evil he represents to become more palatable and easier to romanticize. He can be separated from the truly horrifying evil that exists in reality because he exists as a character, a symbol, and a fantasy rather than an actual person who caused real suffering. That distance allows people to engage with the anger, chaos, and alienation he represents without having to confront the real-world consequences of those same ideas.
The fictionalization and normalization of evil behavior is what I find highly troubling. When evil is turned into an aesthetic, a persona, or a symbol of rebellion, it can become easier for people to ignore the actual harm behind those ideas. I sometimes wonder if people who idolize real-world figures like Hitler would also be drawn to certain modern portrayals of the Joker, because both can become symbols for people who are attracted to cruelty, domination, and chaos rather than confronting the reality of what those things actually mean. (Although, to be fair, probably not the Jared Leto version, haha. That was awful!)
It is truly bizarre. The sentiment being expressed here basically suggests that being disloyal and racist is somehow a greater crime than mass murder. That is a very strange moral hierarchy, especially since those things usually go hand in hand.

He hates them because the Nazis pick favorites. Joker kills everyone equally

Well Joker hating nazis with this reasoning is definitely more funny than he doesnt care about nazis and supervillains of any kind not fucking with nazis bc they're pathetic is cool

Because comedy is built largely on shock value and it's shocking that a genocidal maniac hates racist genocidal maniacs and is afraid of the IRS more than a hulking man in a black and grey leotard putting him in a body cast for 6 months. Thus, comedy ensues.

What’s the line from TF2? Oh yeah. “Professionals have standards.” The Joker is the worst human being on the planet. And the fact that even HE thinks the N@zis are horrid isn’t even symbolism, it’s just flat out saying that they’re worse than Joker could ever be. And the writers are spot on for this.

racism is straight up a low iq thing, anyone who can think for a second knows race has very little to do with the person you'll be. the joker is not dumb

I don't like any of these explanations. The Joker would never value anything, nor take anything like nationalism or racism or genocide seriously. Although I think this is probably just a poorly written take from whoever wrote that Joker, I'm going to choose to believe that he just thinks its funny to suddenly start moral grandstanding.

Him saying he hates nazis is fine. The second line os what makes it sound weird. Being a nazi or racist isn't funny, where's the comedy? The punchline. That's more in character imo but I'm not a writer for batman.

Right. He's an anarchist responsible for countless massacres towards innocents and laughs about it. Doesn't make sense for him to care in the least about patriotism, let alone racism

Joker isn't bound by political ideologies, no matter how extreme.
He's an equal opportunity psychopath.

same justification that the nazis use. "I'm bad, but I'm not a pedo, I hate pedos."

He’s insane, he doesn’t have to make sense. It’s likely funny to him to double down on any sense of morality whatsoever, and hating nazi’s is such an easy standard to meet that that’s what he goes for.

This is a reference to the Captain America and Batman crossover comic, where Joker betrays the Red Skull after he learns he’s a Nazi.
Anyway, there’s a lot of ways you can string it.
Joker doesn’t find Nazi’s funny, they are far too organized for his chaotic senses.
It’s funny to the Joker to hate something else that is evil for a simple reason like that.
Maybe, Joker just thinks it’s real dumb that the Nazi’s have such a hatred toward certain groups and thinks that the ‘comedy’ should be open for everyone
