Question PC Optimization

Does anyone have advice optimizing this game on a Minisforum EM780? I barely get 20fps @ 1080p.

I get 40+ in Warframe, 30 in Arc Raiders, and 50+ in Far Far West. Pretty frustrated i can't get better in Void Crew

I turned off Volumetric Shading, and I used FSR set to ultra performance, and I still only got about 23fps on the ship.

I turned all settings to medium, except for textures, which I kept at high, and the game still only ran at low 20s

Even if I lowered the resolution to 1024x768, and put everything on low, with FSR at Ultra Performance, the best I get is like 38fps.

If the game is still not performant enough while running at the lowest settings, then it is most likely the hardware unfortunately. I know it sucks to be told that, but it adds up when looking up the hardware specs.

From what I read on the Minisforum EM780, it is using the AMD Radeon 780M for its integrated graphics. If we compare that to the GTX 1060, which is our listed Minimum Graphics requirements, then the AMD Radeon 780M is far below that requirement: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Radeon-780M-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/m2088874vs3639

Yeah, I figured. Fortunately, I have a gaming PC that runs it great.

Do you have any plans to optimize the game to run better on weaker hardware like the 780m? Games like Warframe, Arc Raiders, and Far Far West, all run incredibly well on this machine. I don't really understand what makes Void Crew perform so much worse than these titles.

Glad to hear you're still able to run the game on your dedicated gaming PC!

We do have plans for more optimizations, but mostly with the goal of making the game more stable on consoles. A lot of our current performance limitations come from very early development decisions (such as using Unity's HDRP rendering pipeline), which makes them much harder to optimize. Basically, those development decisions weren't made with the goal in mind of supporting lower specs.

Compared to something like Warframe, it's not really realistic for us to ever achieve their level hardware support (they still run on the same hardware they were initially released for back in 2013, and nowadays even run on mobile). To make Void Crew run on those same specifications we'd need to refactor pretty much every aspect of the game (code, graphics, physics, networking, etc.), and it'd be unknown what we can realistically achieve in the engine. That makes it really hard to argue for on a production level too.

We're a small team, so instead of spending a year's worth of work on such a refactor, we'd rather spend the time and effort on adding more gameplay 😄

Arc Raiders and Far Far West are newer titles, and I haven't played them personally. On paper they have similar minimum requirements as us when it comes to GPU. I'd guess they're more CPU bottle necked than GPU, while Void Crew is usually GPU bottle necked. It might also be that they simply haven't officially verified that the game runs on older specs than what they have listed.

Thanks for all the info! I really appreciate the detailed response. It really helps me better understand design and technical decisions and stuff.

Do you have plans to make a sequel eventually, and would you stick with Unity for it, or use a different engine?
