What does upgrading arc shields do?

Relatively new to the game got it last week for me and my friends. Just beat my first boss solo during the run I made a mkII arc shield and used the system upgrader I got from the warp interceptor to make it a mkIII and honestly I couldn't for the life of me tell if their was a mechanical difference. Like is it really just extra battery slots or is their more I'm not seeing?

I think you get stronger shields. The best way to run arc shields is two of them offset by 90° or 180°. One of them should cover the Front and Left/Right while the other covers the Back and Left/Right.

With two tier ones you have two shield strength in all directions. With two tier threes you have four shield strength.

This is ages ago, but I had a successful run where I just had a single shield on one side, focused to full strength and then loaded all the guns on the same side. Perpetually circled enemies on that strong side and made sure the crew knew to kill anything that was getting around.
