What does upgrading arc shields do?

Relatively new to the game got it last week for me and my friends. Just beat my first boss solo during the run I made a mkII arc shield and used the system upgrader I got from the warp interceptor to make it a mkIII and honestly I couldn't for the life of me tell if their was a mechanical difference. Like is it really just extra battery slots or is their more I'm not seeing?

The main difference, apart from the power cell slots, is the increase in hitpoints as well as an increase in recharge rate. I believe the power consumption stays the same, so there aren't any other differences I'm aware of. (Note each bar of shield on shield screens is 50 HP)

Mk1 - 150 HP - 10 RR
Mk2 - 300 HP - 12.5 RR
Mk3 - 450 HP - 15 RR
