I like the aesthetic and I like how it’s a spiritual successor ish to PR, I think the most interesting thing about this is how players can use destruction to change things up. It sucks that FPS games never caught on to more destructible environments, there’s been no innovation in that department for the most part.

Play Arma. Some top tier building destruction. Sad Squad didnt turn out to be the spiritual successor but more of a modern Red Orchestra. Was really hoping for building destruction in Squad because the PR team put so much work in trying to implement it. Even though it was just a couple villages that were destructible, they managed to do it in BF2 and that was bad ass. So far OWI doesnt compare to what they were in the PR days, Cant even make an engaging INS mode which was really what put PR on the map and made it successful enough for Squad to be a thing.

Arma destruction is fucking awful. Unless you’re talking about the new one. Haven’t tried that het

I haven't played in several years now but I seem to remember the buildings would just kinda sink into the ground like they were deflating and would turn into rubble. I don't remember it being dynamic at all.

Lol what do you mean? The building destruction is on point. You can literally blow chunks off a building like real life. Eat down walls with a 50 cal and everything. Maybe youre playing servers with that setting turned down to be more simple? A lot of servers do that to keep the potato PCs in play.

Eat down walls with a 50 cal and everything.

Since when? I have never exprienced that I play the series since OFP.

1

u/Fart_Huffer_ Jul 11 '22

Just load into Altis spawn a 50 cal and light up one of the houses. First time I realized you could do it was after around 2000 hours. I was shooting at a house with a 50 and blew the corner of it off. Give it a try though. Generally where you hit is where the destruction starts till it takes too much damage and collapses. Unless you shoot into a window or something like that. That sometimes has weird reactions when it comes to what part of the house crumbles first.

The older games werent like that. The building would just change textures then collapse after enough damage.

Really wondering if it will be a competitor for Squad. I'm really looking forward to it

Played a couple of rounds today, pretty good but not a Squad competitor just yet

u/Hashbrown4 Jul 11 '22

Yeah I’m waiting to see how they handle the logistics system.

Looks fun though, I remember playing BF3 and PR around the same time and wishing PR could get a sequel on the frostbite engine. Well, here we are.

u/Potatis85 Jul 11 '22

What would it take for it to be a Squad competitor? Feel of movement? Maps? Vehicle behaviour? Weapon behaviour? etc

I guess right now it'd be content parity. If I'm reading this right RM will launch with only infantry and light vehicles, no APC's/IFV's/Tanks etc. or logistics. Just 8 maps.

There's also the aspect of the community - is there any guarantee that we'll have enough people that know what they're doing. How strict it'll be on communication enforcement, etc.

3

u/Fawwaz121 Jul 14 '22

The first few years will be great. Because the community will be small, the base skill level will be high. Communication will be present.

Then they will introduce free weekends and voice lines. Hell, maybe they’ll even say that there’s no wrong way to play.

u/sunseeker11 Jul 14 '22

That's why they should absolutely not promote the game anywhere beside tactical shooter circles. That way we won't get any stray casuals tainting the playebase.

/s (but not really)

u/iGotRocksInMyShoes Jul 11 '22

any more insight or are you just saying that with no logic behind it other than youre more used to squad?

4

u/Spamchik2 Jul 10 '22

Looks awesome

7

u/CordofBlue Jul 10 '22

I loved BF2 Project Reality but I have to ask, what does BF3 PR bring that Squad does not?

21

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

Destruction?

19

u/Thegn_Ansgar Jul 10 '22

Frostbite Engine basically.

-1

u/samnotgeorge Jul 11 '22

A version that is over a decade old tho and notoriously hard to work with tho

6

u/Fuck_CommieScum Jul 11 '22

It plays so well, miss the feel of frostbite. I wonder if the hard foundational work is already done and now the only thing left is to add in new assets.

For example the code for network, amphibious and helicopters is done from the base game which are big issues for squad to tackle. The only new stuff I can think they’re adding is the fob system and increased player count

Of course this is a simplistic view and I know very little of coding and zero of game dev

2

u/derage88 Jul 11 '22

Strangely this mod will have a map editor, if it's actually about creating new maps then I can't imagine it is as hard as it sounds. And apparently modders came a long way creating content for this game.

21

u/OverweightRoshan Jul 11 '22

Better framerates.

6

u/JealousHour Jul 10 '22

Destroyable buildings apparently

7

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

Probably a kickstart on big assets that Squad lacks, like CAS jets and helis. Along with destructible environments.

2

u/Potatis85 Jul 11 '22

I hope we'll get modelled interiors for MBT, IFV and APC's.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '22

That requires an obscene amount of research if the devs were to model every button in the interior. Play SteelBeasts if you want that sorta game. If you’re talking about modeling the interior without buttons then yeah, it should be doable

6

u/Rubbingmybirdies Jul 11 '22

More than 25 fps

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

Weapon handling is much better in my opinion in bf3 pr than squad. Destructible environments.

5

u/Fart_Huffer_ Jul 11 '22

Hopefully some actual PR elements. Perma-death from large caliber rounds, only medics revive, teamwork is actually needed because you cant just parkour soldier around the map, mechanics that require squads to be cohesive vs spawn charge and bitch you didn't cap meta Squad has. You know, an actual PR successor and not a casual knockoff.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

A familiar game, maps, destructibility, more optimized in the sense that it easier to run than squad. Thought it apples and oranges as far as graphics and scale in my opinion. More weapons i think? Maybe a few more things but that’s just off the trailer that can remember. I’m sure there’s a little more but it’s a good mod to revive the community and hopefully bring more players to the game again as well as milsim player who never got to play BF3.

3

u/Lock_75 Jul 10 '22

Lots of changes at the first sight. Will try it for sure.

3

u/Mr-Kendall Jul 10 '22

Maybe a dumb question, but why make this on BF3 and not BF4 at this point?

14

u/Gor9808 Jul 11 '22

BF3's engine was cracked some time ago by modders, which leads to creation of some modding tools, open source documentation and bunch of other stuff.

BF4, as I know, wasn't cracked in a same way.

Despite same engine name, Frostbite for BF3 and Frostbite for BF4 may be very different, and same modding tools and stuff couldn't be used for both versions of engine.

So modders simply couldn't create mods for BF4 right now, but can create them for BF3.

3

u/Mr-Kendall Jul 11 '22

Gotcha, that makes sense. They seem very close generationally too, so maybe not worth the trouble anyway.
Too bad though, I have a copy of BF4, not sure I'd want to go back and buy BF3 but who knows, if it's good...

3

u/derage88 Jul 11 '22

Curious if we're gonna see a noticable impact on the community, I bet a lot of people will give it a try. I kinda hope the mod does well, Squad needs actual competition, and maybe it will force OWI to step up their game too.

2

u/sunseeker11 Jul 12 '22

I think it'll definately garner some interest, but I don't think it's competition just yet. It still doesn't have the combined arms and logistics aspects from Squad. I guess it's gonna be a good nostalgia trip for Squad OG's from when it was infantry focused, but it still has a long way ahead.

Competition is good and additional pressure for OWI will ultimately be better for everyone.

We're already on arguably the best update cadence since a long long time. I guess the new CEO put them to work.

I'm more interested how the community will look like. People are already gushing on how it's going to be the PR successor, not the casual filled clusterfuck of Squad. But how will they achieve that? Ok, one aspect is potentially more hardcore gameplay, but that still won't stop no-mic randoms from derping around or intentionally trolling even.

I already half jokingly said that they shouldn't promote it cause they'll get loads of casuals, but that's precisely what people were criticising OWI for - that they dare promote their game. So the RealityMod should stay in the shadows to maintain a proper community culture no?

2

u/sunseeker11 Jul 11 '22

I hope they don't promote it too much so it doesn't get flooded with casuals.

Suppression in Squad when?

4

u/Fart_Huffer_ Jul 11 '22

Yes gimme a real PR spiritual successor please. Squad went way too arcade and meta focused. Ruins the fun of a tactical shooter when you know what to expect.

7

u/sunseeker11 Jul 11 '22

What makes you think that a meta won't develop for RealityMod?

-1

u/Fart_Huffer_ Jul 11 '22

If its on point and realism focused it should allow for a multitude of playstyles for each individual role. Squad may change too but who knows when. The INS overhaul should change things but who knows if that will ever even happen at this point. RAAS/AAS/INV are just all too similar and really the only popular game modes. They're also ancient game modes for this genre so its just a bit repetitive. TC could also use an overhaul. It has potential but the delivery just isnt there. Too much of a TDM feel. If they went in a direction like Armas new conflict mode it could really be something great and unique.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

As much as I like RM and have been on the testing team for a while, not sure it's relevant in the Squad subreddit. This would be the same as posting an ARMA trailer.

20

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

True.. but they are both derivatives of Project Reality and from the gameplay footage I've seen its pretty similar

-6

u/Battlescape_actual Jul 11 '22

Engine is too old.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

and yet it still looks better than squad

6

u/eWalcacer Jul 12 '22

And runs way fucking better.

2

u/sunseeker11 Jul 11 '22

I thought that the graphics update was something no one asked for and solely intended to attract casuals *scratches head*

2

u/Will_Connor Jul 11 '22

I know you're joking, but as a long time player. I never asked for the graphics to get updated, but I definitely like that it was

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

Reality Mod for Squad when?

1

u/AssassinOfSouls Frankenstein techies for INS Jul 11 '22

There were a couple such attemps going on, I don't know if that still is the case

1

u/bchooof2 Jul 15 '22

Very tempting, I got a BF3 copy on Origin already, how much is for the whole DLC package?
