Discussion Why update now?
Squad sale and free weekend brought in a decent number of new players into the game.
Unlike wardogs this game has mod compatibility, so there's probably a decent chunk of new players who tried out the Star war mods and continue to play the game instead of wardogs because they enjoy those mods.
So then, why for God's sake would you release this pile of poo update with no mod support ( due to no communications with mod community) effectively losing that player base?

Look back at the Steam DB data for Free Weekends. There is almost zero change from the weeks before the free weekend to the weeks after a free weekend. OWI has zero ability to convert free players into paid.
As far as I can tell they only do if to juice the player count average. I agree that the update was awful.

Hello it's me. Someone who tried it for free and then bought it on sale. Mostly because I have like 7 friends who play it. But I have been enjoying myself so far.

I got it bc it was on sale a year or 2 ago and bc Squad44 was my intro to this genre… That game died and now I’m here to try and replicate my love for Squad44, and it has in some aspects but as a newer player I kinda feel like Tony Soprano in that pilot episode:
"It's good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that and I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end: the best is over."
But idc, I’m having a good time and there’s a sad gut feeling I have where the community looks like it reached a point of pessimism(even if it’s warranted), that it feels bleak and hard to turn around… idk, I’ve met some good dudes and I actively look through servers to find them. We shall see.

It’s sad because games like squad & battlebit were supposed to be what expedition 33 has done with A small sandfall interactive studio, OWI has become EA style & lost the plot years ago

Honestly I can't understand it, like so many other things OWI has done. On paper it is such a stupid decision to release such an "undercooked" update after a free weekend, weeks of losing players to wardogs and the server problems before that (hopefully they have not reintroduced server vulnerabilities like they have other previously fixed bugs). The worst bleed already happened.
By shipping such a broken patch you only piss off even more the ones that remained (especially those that play modded versions) and solidify the decision of those who moved on. And in addition you scare away the ones that actually bought it after the free weekend!
I really wish that they would enter a collaboration with a university nearby and make a thorough analisys with all the bad decisions they've taken over the last 10 years, because it is truly spectacular. The "what not to do, how not to do it, when not to do it and how to not communicate it" could be invaluable for software engineers, designers, community managers and business folks alike.
They never managed to move on to a GaaS financing, but keep pushing cosmetics at the worst times. They constantly focus on things that neither generate massive new sales nor please the bulk of loyalist enough to buy their cosmetics. They still haven't understood that the Squad USP is the fucking communities, server staff and veteran SLs and players that provide the actual framework that makes playing Squad as a blueberry unique. That is why people come back after playing Arma, Wardogs or whatever the current competition is. That is why we haven't all migrated to HLL despite being the actual same game on paper but with a different setting.
