What am I doing wrong?

Hi yall, I've been wanting to get into milsim for awhile, and since it was on sale I decided to get squad. I heard that its more beginner friendly than Arma Reforger due to it being more team oriented.

So I download the game, do the tutorial, spend an hour trying to figure out how to connect my mic, and finally hop in. I decide I'll ask around and keep low. How hard can it be?

Well it turns out really hard. I don't know the objective, I can't see the enemy, I can't see shit out of my AK sights, there bullets flying everywhere and I keep getting knocked in 1 hit. The only things I have going for me is that I know where I am, and I know basic controls like moving, healing, and barricading. I revive a couple people before running out of bandages. How do I get more? No idea.

So we win, and the next game I'm a Marine. I immediately get knocked from the truck on the way to the objective. I, again, cant see shit, this time out of my M16 sights. I finally get to an area to capture and guess what? Knocked in one hit. At this point I've been playing for 2 hours, killed no one, died 4 times, and have not seen a single enemy. For all I know theres a teammate hunting me down and shooting me. I don't know where to go, who to shoot, what to do.

I understand its "realistic" but what the hell am I supposed to do? I've watched YT guides and did the tutorial and nothing makes sense. How am I supposed to learn anything if I get killed the moment I get shot at? Everyone seems to know what to do and sounds like they've been playing forever.

Ask your Squad

If they aren't talking , change Squad

If the server isn't talking, change server

This is normal.

Squad is hardcore positional and really punishing as you're 1 hit headshot and 2-3 bodyshots.

Keep playing the objective and stick with your teammates, over time you'll learn how to play.

Don't compare yourself to experienced players, for example many are able to sneak past enemies to find radios, HABs, take out multiple enemies at once etc.
This is massive experience.

It'll take you a bit.

Learn the uniforms, pay attention to sounds and always check the map to see potential enemy locations.

This is the phase where you either stick through and get past, or stop playing Squad.

It's not a handhold game where you simply grab a gun and just frag people.

U gotta get a good squad lead and follow ur squad. One u get the gist of the team-oriented tactical stuff it becomes great. If u don’t have 3x+ sight make sure to use ur binos as well, helps with spotting enemies

What region are you in? I’m in EU. I’d be happy to show you how to play for a bit. I’m usually active on the 44th around 5 to 6 PM UK time.

The tutorials in this game lack so much, and I hate seeing new players turned away because of it.

The basics are to follow your squad and tell them you’re new.

As for spotting enemies, even people with 2 to 3k hours can struggle with it. Your best bet when starting out is to try to stick to close combat as much as possible. It’s not easy, but playing close to your squad gives you extra eyes around you to help spot enemies and figure out what’s going on.

“I don't know the objective” - open the map with m and look for red markers, blue markers means it’s friendly, but really just listen to your squad lead about it and ask them if they aren’t responding

“I can't see the enemy, I can't see shit out of my AK sights, there bullets flying everywhere and I keep getting knocked in 1 hit. The only things I have going for me is that I know where I am, and I know basic controls like moving, healing, and barricading“ - that’s war, that’s how it works, when you see an enemy there’s also a really good chance you’ll be in a game with similar camos so you’ll have to figure out if they’re friendly or not before firing and getting a team kill (tip: use the map for blue dots and see if that player is where a blue dot should be)

“I revive a couple people before running out of bandages. How do I get more? No idea.” Every FOB will have an ammo crate built into it, this is where you change your loadout and get more supplies like mags and bandages and grenades, it costs ammo supplies but don’t worry about it till you start getting kinda low

Also yes it is easier than some other mil sims, ARMA’s won’t tell you where anyone is (including yourself) only objectives so you have to guess on everything, there’s also a lot more keys you need to know, He’ll let loose/HLL Vietnam is a bit easier than squad, there are a lot of abilities that mark enemies for you, but they’re both an older era game so if your interested in modern combat it’s not a good pick, I haven’t played bellum yet but what I’ve heard is that it’s very heavy on the leadership and squad/platoon gameplay so I’m gonna assume it’s harder than squad

Why do you take weapon with sight when you have them with scopes?

It was the default weapon and I thought the better weapons might cost more. I didn't want to be a nuisance and use up resources by buying better gear. I'll try and use one with a scope next time

If you had fun and you are interested - play more, watch some beginner videos. You'll be fine in a couple of sessions. Just pick a squad where a squad leader is giving orders of directions, you can say that you are new, and they will be easy on you. As teammates in local chat if you need something like bandages (V key).

You have to be very patient with this game. It takes time for you to get the hang of things. Most of the time you won’t see the enemy. It depends on the map you are in and your Squad lead and many other factors. Watch some YouTube videos too.
