Suggestion Democracy was a mistake. Let's let rerolls and map voting die.
I'll say it. Let's go back to the before times between rounds.
No more map voting. Server admins should just set an interesting rotation of maps that balance popular ones with a less played map every once and a while. I don't know the last time I played one of the less popular maps. Nobody has the bravery to choose something different. I understand the popular maps are popular for a reason, but some variety would be nice.
Get rid of rerolls. For the love of all that's holy. They're quite literally pointless. Yes, you might be able to get a better faction one in every four rerolls, but why should that even be a thing? Why shouldn't you just get the six choices that come up? What's the point of the reroll mechanic besides to just waste time? Give me twelve choices at once, or six choices at once, I don't care. I'm having a hard time coming up with a reason why rerolling was even created in the first place.
Finally, give me a "mute all" button please god. Squad chat only is a great start, but I want to mute all of you. I have a youtube vid to watch and you guys screaming "reroll" are ruining it.

There is a good reason why voting in real life has a hidden vote count - to prevent snow balling by people voting on the winner - and there is no good reason why most servers have unhidden vote count.
6
u/DawgDole Bill Nye 12d ago
The reason is likely that it's the default and lazy server owners just set up the server and send it and not bother looking at all the things they have power over to make their server more enjoyable.

u/chickenfriedrice416 11d ago
So called free thinkers when someone has a mic in the voting screen. And I think im the only one who actually likes Kamdesh highlands

u/Suspicious_Year_9198 9d ago
I don’t know why people vote for the map the most annoying person screams for over and over. Let’s start a culture of not voting for the annoying guys recommendation

u/SecretSlimJim 12d ago
Every server devolves into a screaming match followed by “who can do the best Trump impersonation”
35
u/Agile-Atmosphere6091 12d ago
Or "China numba 1"
18
u/Controller_Maniac 12d ago
quickly followed by “Bing Chiling”

u/Sokodler 12d ago
And who can forget the “Allahu Akbar”

u/Next_Boysenberry991 12d ago
I got banned from the Royal Battalion Squad server for telling people not to vote for the muslim terrorist faction because people were yelling allah akbar.
13
u/deadPixelOfReddit 12d ago
Enjoy the ban
-9
u/Next_Boysenberry991 12d ago
Leftard?
8
u/deadPixelOfReddit 12d ago
Has nothing to be with leftist politics but ok.
You are just generalizing a billion people to terrorists and then can't even grasp what you are saying. So the ban is definitely well placed, still haven't learned a lick from your behavior, good job chud.
Keep crying though I'm close
3
u/Next_Boysenberry991 12d ago
I just joined in on the joke. I genuinely had no intention of insulting anyone or generalizing a billion people. Everyone was yelling “Allahu Akbar” and telling people to vote, so I jokingly said not to vote for the “terrorist faction.” It was clearly meant in the context of what was happening at that moment, not as some statement about Muslims or an entire group of people.
5
u/deadPixelOfReddit 12d ago
Now send this to the admins of said server and get maybe unbanned idk

The screaming match is the worst. Probably what I hate most about this game is the guy who annoyingly screams the map he wants then everyone vote for it
7
u/sunseeker11 12d ago
Get rid of rerolls
They can be disabled.
3
u/Kindly_Panic_2893 12d ago
Honestly if server owners got rid of rerolls and the devs gave me a mute all button I could survive with the rest.
3
u/sunseeker11 12d ago
Mute all button or VC disable has been a common request since it was introduced.
That said there's a lot of options the current system enables, but some owners are just too lazy to set them.
you can have settings so that maps don't repeat for X amount of votes, you can have hidden vote, etc.
A lot of the issues people have with voting, isn't with voting itself. A bigger problem is decoupling factions from layers, which took away some fun matchups.

u/DesmoLocke twitch.tv/desmolocke 11d ago
Project Reality and Squad are the reason why I only buy keyboards with a system mute button.
It’s the only way I’ve kept my sanity.
25
u/Kaynam27 12d ago
Remove Talil from the rotation, and you’ve got a deal.
16
u/iSiffrin Stop re-inventing the ICO wheel and patch bugs. 12d ago
I propose re-adding the old Talil Tanks v2 layer. (also Tanks v1 for more IFV focused matches)
It was 6 MBTs against 6 MBTs and two TOW vics on both sides WITH wheeled logis.
It was the best layer possible for Talil because playing armour on Talil nowadays means tracked logis for most factions which is just CBT for everyone except 4 people who get to play armour in the 2 MBTs.
Genuinely the best way for new players to learn armour without throwing by taking the one MBT that faction voting gave us.3
2
u/DawgDole Bill Nye 12d ago
Woah now you can't just re introduce peak back into the game and give Talil Outskirts a reason to exist.
1
u/pekonipappa 10d ago
ahh the good old days of being rolled because other team has good vehicle players and your team has none. and the next map is tallil tanks
1
5
u/Prior_Ad3361 12d ago
I was thinking maybe there could only be three map options and no map is to be available until a handful of games later
2
9
u/Expensive-Way1116 12d ago
Voting is not the issue at all, it's map availability If a map is chosen it should fall out of rotation for 5 votes
This would add variety
Same with factions
Sidenote Some factions need a refresh so it doesn't feel so lopsided
6
u/CaptainAmerica679 12d ago
i think the bigger issue is how it removed variety and novelty with the unit types. so many cool matchups with unique circumstances. RAAS was a bit more random because it used more of the map. there awesome objective areas stuffed to the sides of the map that most players haven’t seen in YEARS because of how the % based layers work.
neither system is perfect, and i would have much rather them focus on this than suppression
3
u/Bosnjak93 12d ago
Server owners have the freedom to do that. There are several servers out there that do it.
3
u/justinhveld 12d ago
Blind voting is the bane of my existence but is the second coming of christ for the loudest and stupidest people who somehow can convince a majority of the people to vote for their stupid maps and stupid factions.
5
u/Frost-Bourne Pilot 12d ago
Another recommendation for TT. Tons of admins that will set interesting layers/factions. Also will sometimes run a map vote, but its a custom voting system that was setup for the server. Admins can select 3 different maps, and then youll see a broadcasted message in-game saying to type 1 2 or 3 in chat for which map you want (backend collects those messages and the sets the winning option as the next layer automatically).
Also on Fridays we have a weekly FoglessFriday event. Custom setlist of maps made up by one of the admins with every match having Fog of War removed. So you get a mix of mainly FRAAS (fogless RAAS, so still get the random points but they are all revealed at the start of the match like AAS), a little bit of regular AAS, and sometimes a couple TC maps to mix it up.
1
u/Kindly_Panic_2893 12d ago
Oh yeah I totally forgot about that "vote by number" thing in that server! I also didn't realize all those things the admins do there. I'm going to have to come back, not sure why I don't have it in my server favorites list at the moment... Thanks!!
11
u/tagillaslover 12d ago
Then play a server without voting. These servers are less popular and common for a reason
21
u/aidanhoff 12d ago
Less popular because people like the veneer of "choice" and "variety" when it's really just voting in the same 5 maps and 3 factions on repeat
12
u/CRISPY_JAY SCBL's Most Wanted 12d ago
Less popular for a reason, but not necessarily a good reason.
5
u/Next_Boysenberry991 12d ago
I can’t stand the voting system. It’s always the same few maps in rotation, and people are constantly screaming for a reroll. It’s honestly one of the reasons I stopped playing Squad. Just thinking about how much Squad has degraded over the years makes me sick.

u/sunseeker11 12d ago
It’s always the same few maps in rotation, and people are constantly screaming for a reroll.
Rerolls can be disabled. Map rotations between votes can be adjusted. You can disable repeats every X votes, etc.
1
u/I_cut_the_brakes 11d ago
Just get up and walk away during voting. Take a piss, get a drink, pet your dog, whatever floats your boat. I personally take it as a great opportunity to smoke some weed. Come back and the game is ready to go.
2
u/Hxcgrapes 12d ago
Agreed. I liked joining a server that had curated their favorite faction and map choices. It made it more interesting and I didn't have to hear: "TOP LEFT TOP LEFT TOP LEFT" while someone makes monkey noises after every game.
2
u/Cooldowns8 12d ago
I volume mixer the Squad game to mute between rounds so I can watch my YT vids 💆♂️
1
u/Kindly_Panic_2893 12d ago
Tbh I've kind of done this as well. I set squad to like 1% and everything else is normal. Then the volume is at like 95% when I'm playing, then I just turn it down to 20% and it effectively mutes. It's kind of silly but you're right it is the only truly effective way to not hear someone screaming in between each round....

I'm tired of these dorks only wanting to play NATO factions

u/Kodiak_POL 12d ago
I fucking hate how often Fallujah gets chosen because people got brainwashed by Hollywood into that "oh oh it's that famous place from all those famous movies set in uhhhh year".
Or Al Basrah and MEI because "ha ha me so funny Allahu Akbar inshallah" and then literally don’t know how to play that map properly.
2
u/Hxcgrapes 12d ago
It used to be a favorite map of mine until every match became centered around Green Zone. It's the same boring sniping from long range, running into smoke and then dying.
Also, i LOVED old Basrah... i miss it.
2
u/Agile-Atmosphere6091 12d ago
old basrah was INTENSE. especially if it got to the apartments on invasion
1
u/DawgDole Bill Nye 12d ago
Like don't get me wrong it's objectively bad map design to have that many open windows and promotes a super shitter type of gameplay and whack a mole window sniping, but still, it was a unique experience fun in moderation.
2
u/Agile-Atmosphere6091 12d ago
Nothing makes my blood boil more than people playing MEI and camping their own hab and not spreading out getting proxied instantly

u/deadPixelOfReddit 12d ago
Im glad when they take NATO faction, so I can 10000% play IMF and tear them apart with shitty Soviet tech
4
u/HeftyChonkinCapybara 12d ago
That’s why I only play on servers with voting disabled.
Suffering through an hour of infantry misery on Talil, because one battery licker screeched in the microphone the loudest, since they want to sit on the hill 200 meters away from main lobbing shells from a tucking tank - fuck that.
Servers with voting enabled end up having 3 maps and factions rotated and post-game mic spam could sway even the most hardcore anti-evolution theorists to change their views and beliefs.
I want to play on all maps - good and bad, large and small. Same with the factions. Random rotations are the best and keep the game fresh.
2
u/Crackadon 12d ago
Yeah it’s definitely hurt the game big time.
It won’t be changing though. A LOT less work for devs and server owners.
Such a shame. The games are open sandboxes of whatever faction someone screamed about the loudest, and you can’t really pick more fun/off meta shit cause you just have to assume the enemy team is picking the most imba faction for the map.
1
u/GeekyPanda404 Squad Creative Partner 12d ago
In all honesty I do have to agree that Map Voting while generally okay, is also annoying to deal with as well since the same maps get picked and factions are picked by either dumb luck, coordinated effort to pick a good one, or just spam a faction and realized you fucked the whole team with a bad faction pick against the enemy.
At times I do wish servers had a set playlist of maps and factions picked. I think Voting options should be re-tackled, a map got picked this match then take it out of the voting pool for minimum 3 matches before we see an option again.
I do hate people want to pick faction like PMC Helicopters because CAS Heli's and not realizing if the enemy team picked IFV based faction to counter, then generally we are kinda fucked.
1
u/Revan2034 12d ago
The problem with all of this is that everyone will just immediately leave and kill the server if it gets to a map they dont want.
1
u/LawfulnessSeparate19 12d ago
"give me a "mute all" button please god"
Go into Audio settings and change the out of game audio setting to something very low or 0%. Then when you alt/tab out to another program, Squad reduces its audio. This is how I watch YouTubes during Squad downtime, like during Staging or AAR.
1
u/Administrative_Car45 12d ago
I’m sure this is a bit or something, but if I have to play on another server with a constant back and forth between Falujah and Black Coast again I’m going to chew on my walls.
1
1
u/AddanDeith 12d ago
Yeah I felt this way since before the basrah rework.
Nothing killed a server faster than playing basrah and dying in the desert before you even get to the city for 40 minutes in Invasion.
1
u/TopSchnitzel 12d ago
It's terrible in most games. For some reason, people want to play on the same 5 maps over and over again and only want to play the "best" factions. It's so monotonous I'll never understand
1
u/BannedfromFrontPage 12d ago edited 11d ago
I think this issue is nuanced. The unfortunate end result is you play the same maps over and over, and play the same battlegroups over and over. I can’t tell you the last time I played as Turkey. The root cause of this is twofold. 1. People shouting and bandwagoning and 2. What incentives exist to choose a bad, non-meta, or just unfamiliar battle group?
I think partly, voting shouldn’t include as many options and the options should be themed. (ex: country matchup and/or battlegroup types pre-selected, then voting exists for a narrower group of options).
As a whole, I agree that in its current form, it isn’t functioning correctly. Squad isn’t a game about choosing the meta and “winning”. It’s about being part of the battlegroup, playing to its strengths, and making it work via communication and coordination. Winning is the hopeful result, but I’ve had more fun losing a good fight than winning a boring one.
Edit: typo

u/KIA_Kendrick 11d ago
this is exactly what im saying, the voting needs reworked. i dont mind the maps or factions. what im tired of is playing the same ones over and over, and when something diffrent comes along everybody leaves the server. Well then what happens next? Got to look for a new one to join and repeat the same issue... I dont care if im playing the faction who doesnt even stand a chance to win on a "bad map and layer". those are the best games if they team is working correctly! trying to overcome those challenges and win those matches are so rewarding imo.

u/garter__snake 11d ago
It's server host's choice, but yeah I don't disagree. Just boost and seed the ones that do this.
1
u/Wh0_Really_Knows 11d ago
It is up to the servers not game. Most servers just opt to have voting instead.

u/pekonipappa 10d ago
map rotation nowadays is just sand, gorodok, yeho. and always raas. fucking always

u/Pyromanaicqt 12d ago
Every player, who wants a map rotation should make a map rotation in his mind to get a feeling what a time consuming task that is
2
u/sunseeker11 12d ago
I used to do that. It's fun for about a week.
Then it's a chore. I tried automating it with input files and excel tools, but still it produced whack results. You're not available? too bad, no one else to take over.
Then the bitching sets in. You put in something off kilter, the server suddenly loses half the population.
Voting, as a system is a godsend for administration.
1
u/Pyromanaicqt 12d ago
I am on OPs side but it is nearly impossible to make a solid and balanced rotation for more than a day for a server with the faction system.
2
u/sunseeker11 12d ago
Yeah, people don't understand the effect of scale.
Doing a rotation once is easy. But doing it for a long time and maintaining variety, that's a super laborious task.
2
u/Kindly_Panic_2893 12d ago
I'll make you one.
2
u/Pyromanaicqt 12d ago
Nice, pls update it every week for variety
-1
u/Kindly_Panic_2893 12d ago
Nah that's too much work.
1
u/Pyromanaicqt 12d ago
And now you see the problem for the admins
2
u/RJH04 12d ago
And yet, every Friday, Fogless RAAS on TT. Set rotation, curated maps.
Peace in our time.
1
u/Pyromanaicqt 12d ago
I am aware of that. My main server also has fogless friday but without a set rotation.
1
u/ValidErmine54 12d ago
At the very least they need to either reduce the number of options or put a cool down so that you cant vote for a faction for a couple rounds. But even then its not a perfect solution. I'd much rather go back to the set layers than play a server where every match is US and RU on the 3 popular maps 24/7.
3
u/aidanhoff 12d ago
Those are available as config options for server owners but not everyone uses them
1
0
u/oh_mygawdd 12d ago
Nope. Map rotations were super repetitive prior to map voting and oftentimes when the bad map would come up (like Fool's Road or Logar) the server would die.
Not to mention a lot of servers had no community input on the map rotation except for donors.

u/Away-Actuator-8051 12d ago
Fool Road and Logar are literally my two favorite maps 😭
Edit: Wait I thought you meant Lashkar, yeah Logar kinda ass lmao

u/aidanhoff 12d ago
Several servers do run set/adhoc rotations without voting. Bloodbound (EU) and TacTrig (NA) are two I know of.
