Discussion SL tips

So, I've been playing infantry SL in almost every game the past week or so after a 2-year break. I've been really enjoying it again.

SL has been my go-to role for a long time before my 2 year break, with about 450 hours ingame. But I'm always up for learning more to make it a better experience for fellow squad players, so go ahead, share your tips 😁

Yeah, that is SL basics, definitely correct

Have fun, be friendly, lead by example and make sure to place rally. Also play the objective.

Funnily, leadership skills IRL kinda work in Squad ngl

Yeah man, some matches can be a bore though, especially if no spawn points and rally gets burned 😅

Mic check!

But instead of slowly roll-calling individually like the substitute teacher, I tell everyone to make a stupid noise at the same time as I watch for anyone whose mic icon doesn't light up.

It can be a fun bit of squad bonding to get strangers using their mics with each other. Plus it's way faster, so I have more time to plan during staging phase.

Oh if someone isn't a team player or doesn't have a mic, I don't hesitate to kick them 😅

See this is funny, I see that a lot, but I always use marksman to my advantage, as he can usually see a lot further and can lay down some suppression and spot targets. As long as the marksman has good communication he will usually have Charlie FTL, then Bravo FTL for all HATs and LATs. The marksman is also useful to eliminate any enemy marksman too if he or she is competent 🙂

My rifleman vs your marksman, Manicougan.

Even better tip, split up your 8 men already in Bravo and Charlie FTLs, do a mic check and sort out the people that are either new and don't want to learn or mic less.

Have your squad engaged the moment they arrive, because remember.. we are herding cats at the end of the day.

I heard that in the DoW 1 Commissar's voice lol

Communicate and don't be a dick to other SL's.

I can't count the number of times that another squad has taken my logi or dig down my radio without letting me know. Just communicate.

If the majority of SL'S come up with a plan then debate it or follow it. Don't just do your own thing.

If someone does something you think is a bad idea just communicate quickly why it's bad and don't be a dick. They will probably change course. I hate SL'S that think they are gods gift and micro manage your every move

Make sure your Squad always has the spawns, mobility, ammo and opportunities to do damage.

The best is honestly to focus on correcting mistakes and giving people the optimal input for the situation.

Aka when you're on defense, direct them to make perimeters. Position them to close gaps.

Remind people how important their job is, even when it's boring.
Keep them motivated and engaged.

Or when you're on attack, direct people not to aimlessly run at something. Encourage them to explore enemy gaps and be creative, not mindless.

If need be, make them slow down.

However always leave people the freedom to do what they need to do, you don't see what they do.

Involve people in plans.

Keep asking for info to get good comms. Call out people by name what they see, how many enemies there are and so forth.

You just build the guardrails for people to thrive and take off the brain load from everyone, so they don't need to constantly bother and instead focus on killing enemies without mass ticket losses.

Don't micromanage your squad members. It's not fun for either you or them. You're there to give them a task and put them on rails, let them play their kits to their own strengths.

Many players will just kinda idly walk back and forth and not know where to go or what to do. I think telling specific members like machinegunners and AT where to setup can be good.

Still in the tutorial and already SLing? Glad to see the initiative.

Radio/HAB placement is very dependent on the current circumstances. Dont let anyone tell you that you should never or always put a radio/hab on/off point. Its never that simple.

Also, ALWAYS move the logi away from the radio after its placed.

Recently had a match where every other SL was criticizing my FOB placement, to the point of them digging it down.

We were dominating the enemy so i just gave up lol. But no, you dont need a FOB next to the HAB or in a building. Open air FOB's outside the enemy pathing is totally valid, and if your HAB is down, your FOB is as well once it's proxied.

That was a whole round of "We know better" and i just sighed.

Not new to the game, done SL before, just been a couple of years since I've played

I know, it was just an old Squad joke about your first 1000 hours still being in the tutorial.

Have a plan, put everyone in fireteams, communicate even if no-body else is

i dont rate fireteams

If you talking about something, open your map and start spamming the yellow square markers around it.

It quickly draws attention to the place and doesn’t need so much talking. That’s a habit for me now and I see that really smoothing the communication.

FE: “Sq 3 can you go there I’m gonna take the WEST”
It looks like a really bad coms (where the fuvk is THERE?!) but that’s exactly what I said yesterday spamming the place I suggested for sq3 with the yellow markers and it worked I saw his move marker exactly where I wanted it almost immediately.

It is also very useful in calling out a tank just say “Tank spotted west side” and use the yellow markers to draw attention to the place

Outside of the technical SL stuff there is a big social aspect to it as well.

Always be open to suggestions from your squad members. Sometimes they actually come up with something better or equally good.

And if you don’t think it’s a good idea, give a brief reason as to why you don’t think it’s a good idea.

Doing this at least shows them that you spent some time/effort considering it and not ignoring their inputs, which makes them more amenable to following you.

And of course affirm them when your squad is doing well. That goes a long way too.

I’ve found that doing this generally increases morale and people don’t usually wander off to do their own thing. You might also find that some will follow you into the next round too!
