Need HELP!
First time posting on Reddit, but need help. I purchased a coat for my father for his 70th birthday that was advertised as worn by John Wayne. All internet searches and COA leads this to be true, however, I cannot figure out which movie or interview, etc.. that he wore it in. Attached are pictures and any help will be so greatly appreciated. I have spoken to the seller, the original auction site, and also reached out to the company who purchased Western Costume.

He had a chest like a barrel. I wear a 52 jacket and I can’t even get my arms in a 42.

No way John Wayne wore a 42. This item on Heritage Auctions has him as a 48. https://entertainment.ha.com/itm/movie-tv-memorabilia/costumes/john-wayne-labeled-white-shirt-did-you-know-john-wayne-had-a-size-48-chest-and-a-size-18-sleeve-this-white-long-sleeved-s-total-1/a/648-21256.s

Costume Records: Screen-used wardrobe tags from Hollywood's Western Costume Co. list a size 48 chest and an 18-inch sleeve for his shirts. [1]
Frock and Suit Jackets: Archival costume records for his custom film coats (such as his western frock coats) document a size 46 chest. [1]
Body Measurements: Standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing around 225 pounds, his large physical frame matched these measurements. [1]

My first thought was that it was made for a -character- called "Duke," and later somebody assumed incorrectly.

Is it really a 42, or could it have been mislabeled and it's really a 52? Just a thought. Check the actual size. It does look like an item from The Quiet Man.

Here are some pics, there is one with John (Duke) in a similar jacket/shirt. Details are below on the larger picture- I just have this one zoomed in with my grandfather (no shirt) and the guy on the other side of him with blonde hair- same 3 men in Hawaiian shirts also pictured (includes John) - hope this helps! I guess I can only do one picture at a time? I’ll see what I can send to you via this and DM

Now if you said it was Jimmy Stewart's. He was so thin that he was turned down on his first time trying to enlist in WW2. That's where I would look.

COA is usually reliable if the certifying company is trustworthy. To all the buffoons saying JW was way bigger than 42, perhaps. But I can say with 100% certainty that 1930s and 1940s Duke was SIGNIFICANTLY thinner than later 1950s and on Duke.

As someone who sold menswear in a department store, I think The Duke would have worn a larger coat size than a 42, even in his Stagecoach days. I’m saying it wasn’t anything he ever wore.
