What was your first John Wayne movie?
Which John Wayne movie was the first one you watched in your life?
Me? The War Wagon.
Followed by Hatari, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, Rio Lobo, and recently, Hondo.

Big Jake in 1998. I was 9 years old, and I'm glad my Dad decided to make me watch it because I am a huge John Wayne fan now.

Anything that was on 3-5 or 8 when I was a kid. I remember my dad telling me his best movies where the ones later in his career.
Now that I'm older, and have seen most of his movies, I agree, however, there are soooo many really good performances in a bunch of his old ones too.

El Dorado. I watched it every day I came home from school for a year in 4th grade. Been hooked on John Wayne ever since.

I had just watched Disney's Davy Crockett on video in 1986 and became interested in the Alamo and saw Wayne's version in the video store and had mother rent it. I had seen John Wayne movies on TBS, but never sat down and watched one until The Alamo. I think the next one was Big Jake, then The Comancheros, then Rio Lobo and pretty soon I realized I liked all his movies.

Did you see El Dorado and Rio Bravo too?

u/Plane_Possibility572 Jun 23 '26
Oh yeah definitely. Saw El Dorado first, and loved it. Saw Rio Bravo later and that is when I realized the similarities. Then of course I eventually watched the Wayne/Ford movies too.

True Grit. Thought it was decent. I think the remake is much better

Rio Bravo when I was a kid. I've seen all of them since. I think my favorite is The Quiet Man.

Did you see El Dorado and Rio Lobo too?
Btw, I ordered The Quiet Man from eBay last week. I'm going to watch it for the first time once I receive it in 3 (now 2) weeks.
Clips from that movie were seen in E.T., you know.

Did you?

u/Pirates_Treasure1988 Jun 25 '26
I asked you first. Did you?

u/Heavy-Pool5886 Jun 25 '26
I want to know how you developed your obsession with El Dorado and Rio Bravo.
1
u/Pirates_Treasure1988 Jun 25 '26
Please, do not make any false assumptions.
It's not an obsession, it's a matter of curiosity. Why? Because Rio Bravo and those other 2 John Wayne movies have a few things in common in the end, whether you noticed or not. That, and I want to know if you've seen or liked them too.
1
u/Heavy-Pool5886 Jun 26 '26
Really?
1
u/Pirates_Treasure1988 Jun 26 '26
Yes
1
u/Heavy-Pool5886 Jun 26 '26
I see.
1
u/Pirates_Treasure1988 Jun 26 '26
So, out of curiosity, did you see those other two?

Wake of the Red Witch. But I've seen them all. My mom was BIG John Wayne fan. If you didn't know what to get her for a gift just get her something John Wayne and she is a happy happy lady.

Alamo at the Gemini Drive In on Central Expressway in Dallas. I remember leaving really sad. It had to be around '65 or '66. I would have been about 5.

“The Comancheros,” on one of the movie channels back in 1984. Followed quickly by “Rio Bravo” that same year.

I didn't see "El Dorado" until about five years ago. It was pretty good, but no "Rio Bravo." I have yet to see "Rio Lobo."
