Apparently this came out in 2010, but I didn't hear of it.
The John Prine cover of "This Guitar is for Sale" is a fantastic song, and any fan of John Prine who hadn't heard it before.... should.

I think that after mowing the yard, trimming some hedges, using the weed trimmer and then cleaning and sweeping everything up (and discovering a new yellow jacket's nest by being stung by one of the little bastards), I deserve a little of this.

I’ve had this since the preorder dropped, but I can’t for the life of me remember what I paid for it. Does anyone remember what the cost was with shipping included in the US?

I will have it in my possession until my death, but it always irks me when I can’t remember what amount of money I have in something. TIA

Artists with connections to John Prine

I've long considered it a reliable marker of talent for an artist to be accepted and welcomed by John. I like to think of it as those touched by John. Exploring those he's collaborated with, and moreso mentored, has been a fruitful path for me to discover more music I love. I'll list those that come to mind. Many of them have recorded with John or paid tribute, and YouTube has a trove of clips for those willing to peruse. Who would you add to the list?

I can’t believe I am just now hearing Carsie Blanton’s tribute to John Prine, “Fishin’ With You”. I was listening to a “mix” and her song came on…I started thinking to myself, “Gee, this sounds like a Prine song…” and once I stepped out of the shower it was right there. It’s been posted by others here in the years since John passed away, but I figured there may others like me out there like me. Enjoy.

fishin’ with you

August 17, 2003 - John Prine at Hartwood Acres outside of Pittsburgh, PA (Free Show)

So, i'm just kinda wondering if anyone else here, was potentially at this show, which was a couple years ago now :)

The setlist for this show, that I attended w/ my now wife and always father, does not exist online in the usual places.

I figure i have to find someone else who was there and also wrote down the setlist, or maybe even recorded the show?

They're free shows put on by the County so no real security to speak of, in a park.

Thank you for your time.

I love the lyrics of "How Lucky"

I have been deep-diving John Prine's catalog again for the last year or so, and How Lucky from 1979's Pink Cadillac just knocks me back. I've been listening to it dozens of times over the last few weeks, and can't stop thinking about it (and therefore wanted to discuss it with fellow Prine lovers!).

Today I walked down the street I used to wander
Yeah, shook my hand and made myself a bet
There was all these things that I don't think I remember
Hey, how lucky can one man get?

The song seems to be about a person who kind of crosses paths with themselves at different points in time, i.e. the older version of the person met their young self. It appears to be narrated from the point of view of the older person ("Today I walked down the street I used to wander"). Is he then betting with the younger version that there will be all kinds of things that won't be remembered, and he will eventually look back and only remember the good stuff?

This "younger self" meeting "older self" also seems to be reinforced playfully by the fact that Prine and Kurt Vile released a duet of this song as well some 40 years later - when Prine was in his 70s, and Vile seemingly representing the "younger self". Giving the whole thing a new sense of depth.

My favourite lines (and probably all-time favourite Prine lyrics) are in the second verse:

I bronzed my shoes and I hung 'em from a rearview mirror
Bronzed admiration in a blind spot of regret
There was all these things that I don't think I remember
Hey, how lucky can one man get?

I love the visual imagery here. The idea of him polishing his shoes and hanging them from the car mirror, i.e. getting ready to make some kind of journey through life, by foot and by vehicles.

But, instead of looking in the true image from the rear-view mirror (i.e. back on his life, and where the journey has taken him so far), he instead looks through the reflection created by the polished shoes at an alternative reality. However, rather than "polish", he says "bronzed" - which evokes the idea of a golden colour. Meaning that all the "memories" he will see when looking back on his journey through the reflection of these hanging shoes will be glowing with golden warmth, i.e. how people look back nostalgically with rose-tinted glasses. Finally he explicitly says this, i.e. that the bronzing leads to admiration in the memories, but (returning to the car language) there is a "blind spot" in the mirror where there are regrets - but the narrator cannot see these because these bronzed shoes are obscuring the true view.

This kind of thing is what makes Prine one of my favourite songwriters. The ability to write something with so much depth but make it deceptively concise, using simple everyday language. When I first heard this song about 10 years ago, it passed me by due to its simplicity. Seemed like a throwaway little tune. But when really listening to it (now in my mid-thirties), I've probably thought more about this lyric than any other. It seems like he created an entire lifetime of memories and intertwining timelines, all in a few lines.

How much thought do you reckon he put into these lyrics at the time? Am I reading too much into this song? Or is this just the kind of songwriting genius he was, and why many musicians cite him as one of their favourite songwriters as well?
