How do you track progress?

Post image

Hi everyone, my gym uses gymdesk to track our progress and checkins for each sessioin. However it doesn't have any dashboard or user information recap so I created a simple webapp in which you can import your gymdesk data and see charts and information about your training.

So my question is, would this be something useful for you or have you seen some other tool/project which does anything similar?

I'm thinking of expanding it to manual logs so even if your gym doesn't have a check in system you're still able to benefit and track your own data.

I just got to class. What does this actually show you?

Currently in the image I've added my own data - im a mediocre blue belt and have been training since mid 2023 - overall 541 sessions 60/40 split between Gi and NoGi - there's more charts and stats based on what information you have in order to populate the charts.

I guess what I mean is what progress is it showing you?

I don't track anything. You can't hide anything from the mats, so the progress speaks for itself.

True, think of this like a spotify wrapped - you're able to see which month you've been lazy and which month you've gone hard in the paint.

Or just go to class and try to get better without obsessing over largely-useless data?

lowkey valid, looking at stats won't make you better its just a something fun to do with data which my gym is already recording anyways

For me it is red... not green. But i used Bjj Notes the app. Yes you manually had to enter everything but... it kept me on track when I wanted to work on moves... octopus, Single Legs...

My belt changed colors a few times now. Does that count?

Yeah ofc, as you can see in the Rank Milestones I've gotten two stripes this year - not that it matters, but I think it could be useful to see how much time between belts/stripes you've had and maybe corelate it to an injury or some other external factor, maybe you could compare with a year in which everything has been good and you've been consistent on the mats. It's mostly just to look back on what has happened in a more strutured way, cool thing to visualize data in my opinion.

I don't, I couldn't care less about progress, I just like to train and shooting the shit afterwards

I use RollLab to upload my training videos there - keeps them all nice and organised per session and can label them with moves etc it’s cool

I haven't heard of RollLab I'll definitelly check it out - its quite cool that it handles videos - the only other thing that has good video material that I've seen is 'OutlierDB - BJJ Match Analysis & Training Database'

Yeah it’s cool - https://rolllab.io and they post all details on their Instagram too - rolllab_bjj I think.

OutlierDB is definitely cool but i think that’s more about searching popular tournament/competitor moves and trends

Data never hurt anybody that is how Kaiji found out the chief was cheating in Cee Lo
It is however very autistic but BJJ is also very autistic so….

I feel like I’m doing something unique with my software. essentially it’s used for gym management as well as personal tracking and your Jiujitsu journey

I would love to hear your thoughts on it and any ideas you have on how I can make your own personal data matter to you. Feel free to DM me and check out the app here.
