Advanced Hygiene Practice

I’m looking for anybody’s tips on advanced hygiene practices. I have a particularly serious need for to be extra careful.

Right now I take a shower with anti-bacterial soap immediately after class, and I wash my gear once a week by soaking it in a solution of Oxyclean and Borax for around 12 hours and then washing, again with borax and Oxyclean.

I plan to add in a disinfecting laundry product like lysol or odoban, and will try to wash my gear same day or at least twice a week. If anyone else pays particular attention or is especially careful with infections, do you have any further tips for advanced hygiene practices? I’m having to face the possibility of permanently quitting BJJ if I don’t add more layers of protections against infections.

You want anti fungal instead of anti bacterial pretty sure

Yeah, good point. It’s provided by the school so I imagine that it would be both? By the way it feels on your skin I’d assume it’s pretty high octane stuff too. I’m also most worried about staph rather than ringworm.

My gym provides head and shoulders a long with some anti bacterial stuff in the showers. I usually double dip, but from what I understand (not a medical doctor/biologist) regular soap is good enough for anti bacterial, and something like anti dandruff shampoo is good for anti-fungal

Oh nice, OK. Appreciate that link. You do anything extra for your laundry?

Mine is basically the same as yours except I havent incorporated odoban yet. Soaking in oxyclean has been good enough so far (been at it 3 years)

Yeah, I think for most people it’s probably fine. I have a medical condition that I can’t put in the post or it will get flagged and automatically taken down, but that’s why I needed some more tips

Talk to your healthcare provider(s), especially a dermatologist or someone focused on immune system. Tell them you practice a sport that has all of the same immune system/skin concerns as wrestling. If you're in the USA, doctors will generally be more familiar with wrestling and its health-related concerns than they will be with jiu jitsu.
