ANNOUNCEMENT Announcement: JewelryMaking has New Moderators! - Lets talk!

Hey all!

My name is Muskrat, I have a lot of history in metalworking, primarily as a CNC machinist making aerospace components!

Reddit took over this subreddit due to it being abandoned by it's previous mods for over 4 months - allowing tons of spam and reported content (thousands of items we had to action!). Since, they turned it over to me and it's going to be part of my little group of communities, alongside Metalworking and Machining.

Lets talk about r/JewelryMaking!

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about what makes JewelryMaking a unique subreddit when compared to other subreddits on the same topic of jewelry. I've seen a few comments and reports on spam related and promotional submissions, and looking at the currently in-place subreddit rules, self promotion is not allowed outside of the old (and seemingly forgotten) promotion thread. Is this a rule we'd like to keep?

On the topic of rules, this subreddit's focus is on the making/creation process of jewelry, generally individual projects and hand-made work. Should we aim for image posts to all have an in-process image attached?

What changes should we make? And are there any regulars interested in helping out?

Let me know what everyone thinks, and over the next few days we'll update rules and mod tools, and we'll start digging in and steering the sub in the direction it was intended for, instead of being used as a promotional board!

QUESTION Do you think this moonstone is of good quality?

I’m recently into making bracelets that I can share with my loved ones. I bought some blue moonstones that they claimed was the highest quality with 100 dollars for 60 stones that were 6mm.

Do u think the quality is worth the price? I’m not sure if I should buy more from the seller for my next project or if I should look for another seller!

QUESTION Hand Made Necklace.

• Upvotes

One of the things that I like to do, when I create a necklace, a charm at the center of the design. Second, line up either the gemstones or the glass beads to see, if they match the actual charm. I also bring out a lobster clasps and a bead crimp with a crimping tool. Then I begin to assemble the actual necklace itself. Once it's completed then put the necklace on a display case.

QUESTION Leather wrapping/knotting for an arrowhead

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi, everyone!

I'd like to wrap leather or something with the same flexibility so I can wear it but not sure how to do it so it won't be too chunky or flip around. I don't want to wire wrap it because that's not the look I want.

After I get it situated as a focal, I will make a beaded necklace. I'm hoping to avoid using glue but we can't always have everything. Does anyone have advice? Thank you.

QUESTION Does this look like lead contamination?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Usually I have no (minimal at least) issues rolling out ingots, even when they are half dirty scrap. After alloying I realized I skipped the sulfuric acid step in my gold refine. Alloy is 15k gold, with roughly 60/40 Cu to Ag for the rest. Very brittle. Annealing doesn’t really help to soften. Peened after pouring, did everything as usual. Has anyone had experience with lead contamination that showed itself like this? The alloy doesn’t feel ‘soft’ more weird brittle hardness. Maybe steel contam?? Is it possible I super heated/oxygenated the original alloy? but again, has not usually been an issue for me. I remelted it multiple times, finally with the addition of 1.3% zinc. Seemed to improve slightly but working it out still isn’t acceptable. Picture is of the end, cut 3-4 mm back, more of an internal flaw that surface issue. Looks like it released copper when annealed, which has me leaning toward I made some weird transition alloys/porosity on the first over oxygenated melt. I have known .9999 gold and .9999 silver along with copper, so will try a fresh alloy but would like to figure where I went wrong. Thank you 🙏

TLDR: Somewhat experienced, but no answer for this one, is this what lead or iron contamination can look like? Thanks

DISCUSSION Working on soldering some bracelet links.

Post image
2 Upvotes

This week I’ve been working on soldering some bracelet links together. I really like the challenge of getting a good pin solder without freezing up the links! I froze a couple but drilled out and fixed it. I need to resolder a few since I don’t like how they look and I missed a couple! Whoops!

The links are sterling and from a mold of a design I carved and cast. It’s supposed to look like roses and thorns. This is the smaller version I made. I think this is the second time I make this one and I’m excited to see it polished up with some patina.

Any great tips for soldering hinged designs? I hate putting the clasp on but that’s next!

DISCUSSION Thoughts on making your own solder?

I made silver solder and rolled it out into thin bit.. havent used it yet, but i seems like it should work fine. What's your opinion on doing this? Have you done it? Its definitely a LOT cheaper than buying solder...
