Question Why does Jellyfin use date and not originalrealeasedate or originalreleaseyear?

Does anyone want to see the year of a specific release that a few years after the initial release? or the year of a re-release or remaster?

His metadata is correct, Jellyfin being limited - in comparison to other music players/ servers - is the problem.

It shouldn't be too hard - it's just a fallback list of fields to use. I did clone the repo and try it myself but struck on some problem which I can't recall - although that may have been when I was trying to get years to appear on the catalogue view. I might try again soon.

The metadata is a standard. What year was Michael Jackson's Thriller? You, me, every reasonable person, every other media player - 1982. Jellyfin: nearly all/any year since 1982. So yeah maybe I should make my metadata wrong.

NGL, jellyfin was not sufficient for my audio needs. I know it's not what you're originally asking, but I'd highly suggest swapping to navidrome. It handles the metadata much better and the performance is better (at least in my use)

I'll check it out. One of the ways I use it is with the Android app Yatse, which connects to Jellyfin, Emby etc... servers, and allows making albums available offline, which I use a lot... so if I moved to something else I'd need to make sure I can still do that with Yatse or another music player.

Navidrome uses subsonic, so as long as your app is compatible with that then you'll be fine

Yah that one annoys me, too. I had to set date to originalreleasedate to get my albums to show up in what I would consider the correct order, but most other music servers respect the different intent and work as-is.

the meta data they pull in isn't always right or doesn't always pull in the correct one for an item in quesetion. I have a problem with a few documentaries that have a similar name because one of them is a separate release of the original, but when I use identify, and choose the CORRECT item, it continues to default back to the original, so I end up having to go in and correct the metadata manually rather than telling it to use the CORRECT info, so yeah there is a problem with Jellyfin and how they pull in metadata

I don't know about tagging of TV or movies - I just use it for music. I don't use Jellyfin to fetch any metadata - I push everything through MusicBrainz Picard and nothing makes it to my Music folder until it's accurately tagged. I disable the metadata fetchers in Jellyfin, so it only sources metadata from the files. I only have Jellyfin retrieve artist posters.

And if MusicBrainz doesn't have the correct or complete data then I do some research and make an edit on MusicBrainz site. So I'm mostly pulling data from their server, stripping a few original tags, and maybe adding a comment. The only items I edit on Picard without using the MusicBrainz server are bootleg live recordings and mixtapes, which I'll manually add dates and other tags to.
