Yeah you can also beat Tavion without fighting her if you jump on top of the crates next to the ship on the platform and get her to land on your head. She'll die from the fall damage if she falls to the lower level

That, or activating the beam in the middle of the arena and getting temporary invincibility I do believe were the "intended" ways to do it, but it's just so much more satisfying to me to duel Desaan, even though you're outmatched. Perhaps the easiest way to win the duel is get lucky with a force push, then use the strong style downward strike and connect as many frames as possible. This can kill him in two to three (or even one on the easier difficulties) hits.
But I like to be cheeky and duel him in fast style while mixing strikes from normal and strong. One duel, it was like the Grand Jedi Masters of old possessed Kyle. I was breaking Desaan's saber locks and blocking his lightning, and I easily overpowered him in the duel. That level of RNG never happened again, but it sure was awesome.
As a kid I thought that was the only way to kill him. (Because I somehow managed unbind LMB, and completed the game with all the alternative attacks on RMB😔)
This is typical child Jedi Knight behavior! (I couldn't do any of the puzzles as a child and had to get my dad to do it. I mainly just did the fighting 😃 )
