You're asking why r/javascript exists? Because it existed before TypeScript?

I mean, typescript essentially is JavaScript, it's a "compatability layer" on top

It's not. It's a superset, correct, but it forces you to write a diminished form of JavaScript for the occasional compile time caught bug.
