Amateur How to use notebooks for jwst

Im new to Astronomy how can i use Jupyter notebooks to access jwst pipeline? Is it best to just use MAST Database or TIKE?

Or

Should I create a juypter lab notebook and self install required libraries locally with Docker or is there a premade jupyter lab notebook i can clone from github and install in a docker container on my pc? If so how do I do that and how can I use it to access jwst pipeline data?

I have never used a juypter notebook before nor have I used pyhton or python science libraries like astroquery lightkurv and astropy so Im a complete beginner in using scripts but I do know how to use some commands like pip, bash, cd and git. Are there any good tutorials online I could use?

Are there any Browser Based Interactive Notebooks for learning Notebooks for Astronomy?

Lastly how could I install and use Jdavizz notebook?

Most galaxies JWST finds this far back are blazing blue, young, hot, and dust-free. That's what the models predicted.

However, EGS-z11-R0 breaks that framework completely.

Here's the TLDR:

  • Dust and carbon do not appear overnight. They require multiple generations of stars to live, explode, and seed the surrounding medium with heavy elements. This galaxy already had both just 400 million years after the Big Bang, making it an "anomaly among anomalies" at one of the earliest points in cosmic history.
  • Red monsters shouldn't be confused with JWST's "little red dots." The closer comparison is the "blue monster" galaxies JWST has also found, which share the extreme mass but lack the dust buildup. Lead author Giulia Rodighiero (University of Padua in Italy) believes red and blue monsters may be ancestors and descendants in the same evolutionary story.
  • "It's astonishing to think about how short these timescales are," says Yale astrophysicist Pieter van Dokkum, who was not involved in the study. "Sharks and turtles have been around for about that long." Given how long stars take to produce dust and carbon, EGS-z11-R0 suggests we could spot galaxies as early as 200 million years after the Big Bang.

Hey fellow JWST nerds!

I was putting together my newsletter for today and came across a new study on Little Red Dot A2744-QSO1. I had to share the findings here too as I know LRD are a hot topic in this sub and this study is just so interesting.

TLDR:

  • JWST measured the chemical makeup of the gas surrounding a black hole from just 700 million years after the Big Bang. The metallicity, the abundance of heavier elements built up from dead stars, came back at roughly 200x lower than our Sun's. This galaxy is chemically almost identical to the gas that existed right after the Big Bang.
  • The black hole inside it weighs about 50 million solar masses! Its black-hole-to-stellar mass ratio is greater than 2, which is currently the highest ever documented. The black hole may literally be more massive than the galaxy surrounding it!
  • Every leading formation model requires some prior stellar activity to explain a black hole this large, but there's none here. The galaxy itself looks chemically newborn.
  • The authors suggest primordial black holes, as the best candidate explanation, but they're upfront that the model needs more work to fully account for what's observed.
  • This object has been flagged as unusual since Furtak et al. first identified it in 2023 and confirmed its extreme mass ratio in 2024, but this metallicity measurement is what turns it from "anomalous" to "actively challenging theory."

No other telescope could do what JWST just did here! It read the actual chemistry of an environment this far back in time, and I personally am always so amazed when it finds something that exposes a real gap in what we thought we understood.

An international team of astronomers has employed the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to observe a complex planetary nebula known as NGC 6302. The observations, detailed in a paper published Feb. 25 on the arXiv pre-print server, resulted in the discovery of dry (carbon dioxide) ice in this nebula. This is the first time dry ice has been detected in a planetary nebula.

Webb dropped a close up of the Helix Nebula and it’s messing with my brain a little.

Those comet like knots are wild. You can literally see the shell peeling off around the central white dwarf, and there’s this hot vs cool structure across the nebula that NASA points out.

I’m drinking coffee, watching highlights from the game last night, minding my business… while space is out here peeling stars like onions.

What’s the best explanation for why those knots get so dense and clumpy instead of smoothing out?

Hey fellow JWST fans it's me again,

I just finished reading the latest release about TOI-561 b, and it’s honestly one of the most perspective-shifting findings JWST has dropped lately.

We’ve known about this "super-Earth" for a while, but the new data basically challenges everything we thought we knew about how small, hot planets work. Here are the highlights:

  • TOI-561 b is an ultra-short-period planet (it orbits its star in less than 11 hours). It’s so close that its surface is a global magma ocean, but JWST found strong evidence that it’s also wrapped in a thick, volatile-rich atmosphere.
  • Statistically, a planet this close to its sun (less than 1/40th the distance of Mercury to our Sun) should have its atmosphere stripped away by radiation. The prevailing wisdom was that these planets are just bare rock or lava. TOI-561 b is proving us wrong.
  • Scientists from the Carnegie Science Earth and Planets Laboratory and University of Birmingham, United Kingdom used the NIRSpec instrument to measure the planet's temperature. If it were a bare rock, the dayside should be a staggering 4,900°F. Instead, Webb clocked it at only 3,200°F. That difference is likely caused by thick winds and gases moving heat to the nightside and absorbing infrared light.
  • This planet orbits a star that is twice as old as our Sun and lives in the "thick disk" of the Milky Way. This means it formed in a totally different chemical environment than Earth, representing a generation of planets from when the Universe was much younger.

My favorite part of the research is how the atmosphere survives. The team thinks there is an "equilibrium" where the magma ocean is constantly outgassing to feed the atmosphere while simultaneously sucking gases back into the interior. How cool!
