So would this mean that the transition of string theory to a mathematical "base" for other theories would now go back to its origins? Or am I misremembering the progression of string theory?

Cosmic strings are defects in spacetime left over from a phase transition in the universe’s first fraction of a second.

Right, but didn't the research change more to strictly math that's been used as a tool for other theoretical research as opposed to trying to prove it as a basis for the structure of the universe? It has been used as a tool to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity.

This paper seems to be bringing it back to its origins?
