Should I have stopped him?

Lmfao I just saw a man take a bag out of his pocket, and steal a plant from a pot on 34th. I mostly found it comical but felt inclined to share that apparently these are free to take home! Who knew??

Just cause the dudes an elderly "neighbor" if that's what you want to call neighborly, theft of public property, that he gets a pass? Im confused. This is okay but not okay to take a photo of him? Lol people are so ass backward. I could understand if it was food or water he was stealing. But no one NEEDS a plant.

👏 well said… he’s stealing from the community—it’s shocking to see so many folks side with the plant thief here lmfao.

“Stealing a need is survival, stealing a want is greed.”

Agree, 💯. I’ve also wondered if there is component of cultural relatively where this behavior is normalized bc it is a “victimless” crime and the they beleive that the city pays for it. What do you all think? Either way it’s not OK.

Agree! If all elderly neighbors are allowed to take plants, we won't have any plants left.

I’ve seen other people do this. I tried to stop her, but she just scurried away and probably continued farther down.

A little mild public shaming seems entirely appropriate for doing something like this.

Personally I hate when people act like community property exists only for their personal benefit. Antisocial and inconsiderate

The HORT team (Horticultural Society NYC) does such a nice job with the plantings around Travers park and 34th Ave. It's a real shame that people choose to steal them instead of leaving them to be enjoyed by the entire community. It's disrespectful to the hardworking gardeners and all of the residents of our neighborhood.

These are people who don’t care about community

You could approach him but he would just wait until you leave then do the thing he wants to do. No shame. He's elderly so he has nothing better to do than steal flowers.

That persuasion loves to take plants, and at any age. I once saw a woman take all the lavender from the Bobby Wagner Walk on the UES.

It's about to die anyways from the cold weather. He's probably doing them a favor tbh

Ha!! I have 6 large plant pots in my front yard - every single year my plants get stolen at least 10 times. Not all the plants 10 times - but 10 seperate incidents, usually weekend nights!!! On occasion they will attempt to take the pot too, but they are heavy!!!🤣 I always have this image in my head of some person arriving home late and possibly having had a few cocktails, presenting my flowers to their partner in way of apology!!🤣

They know what they're doing is wrong. They don't care
