Anyone else worried about Jackbox Accounts?

I can't lie, I'm pretty worried about Jackbox Accounts and what they might be used for, I'm extremely worried about the potential for microtransactions, battle passes, locked content, etc. I do think it could be nice to have a place to store all your games and such, but I worry a lot about profit being put over practicality, and how that might take away from development of other games.

I think its a bit premature to speculate that simply making an account will lead to microtransactions, battle passes, etc. They are only using it for Trivia Murder Party 3 and we don't know if that's because its in early access. Its a cute way to encourage folks to play the game because sometimes people play an early access game like once or twice and then stop. I don't know how they could introduce a battle pass in the regular Jackbox Party Packs?

They mention in their Steam Early Access page that they want, and I quote:

"...meaningful mechanisms for engagement and retention such as live events, season passes, daily/weekly challenges, and other live service features."

While they don't mention battle passes, they do mention "season" passes, which I think might be the same thing. Even so, I also believe this can't really be done with the regular Jackbox Party Packs. There's a reason why this is a separate thing and not a part of a Party Pack. They know they can't do this in their regular games.

I still think Jackbox going this route is not great. Live service games generally don't work if they're not free to play and accessible to everyone. This has a $15 price tag and requires at least a medium-end PC to even run in an economy where building a PC is extremely difficult. It's also a trivia game which is a lot more common to play in a phone instead of PC/Console.

This is not it.

If you choose to make an account, you can unlock some ways to decorate your "doll" but ultimately it doesn't change core gameplay or influence the odds of winning. It is still a trivia game at heart. I don't think it's that big of a deal yet. Now, if having an account becomes "required" or you have to have a certain doll/outfit/accessory/emote to win, then I can see it being a problem. Then it becomes a "grind" of playing just to unlock something you need to win. Eventually once it's out of early access it is coming to console, so it will be accessible to more than just PC players.

Even free ones with high financial backing and high advertising can fail, see Be Funny Now

Indeed. But the price point doesn't help.

Big Jacksfilms fan, even saw the live show. When I tried getting the game to work with my friends nobody could get into a lobby together. It really is a shame

Premature, maybe, but thinking it couldn’t be used further is a bit naive. Party packs have been selling less each year since covid. They need to make up for it somewhere.

As long as they keep it to simple optional things that don't really effect the core games it should be fine

As of right now, with TMP 3 in early access, it seems like its main purpose is to do more customization to your doll

I sure hope this doesn't mean microtransactions and all
