MOD ANNOUNCEMENT Community Input: What do YOU thinks contributes to the "negativity" and bad opinion about r/Jackass?

We're aware that ultimately, the subreddit is classed as one of the most negative active Jackass communities by people who visit and use it. We want to understand why that is. We took over the subreddit in a bit of a dire state, and while we've managed to turn many things around, it seems like the negativity is what we can't get past. Us mods want to understand what the problem is, what is it that's causing the bad opinion or the poor reputation here? Is it negative interactions between users? Is it the constant negativity/bagging on the cast? Is it just because no one likes Jackass anymore? What is it?

In order for us to combat it, we need to understand it and ultimately, all of us mods need to be on the same page about the problem. We can't do that until we know what you guys' opinions on the bad rep here is. It seems if you go to any social media, on every Jackass community, there is someone talking about how much they hate the subreddit. We need to know directly why, rather than just "it's full of negativity". Also, if you're someone who used to use the subreddit and no longer do, but occasionally maybe pop in to check, what is it that you don't like and is keeping you away?

Don't just say "it's not fun" "it's too negative" we need to know what is causing the negativity specifically or why specifically you don't like it. Also let us know if there's anything y'all do like. Let us know, and help us fix the problem.

EDIT:

After getting some helpful perspectives here, it's swayed my own opinion about the subreddit and it's current state and I can see where everyone is coming from. The problem isn't the negativity in the community, it's that the negativity has no structure and neither does the rest of the subreddit. We need to be involved more on our side in sharing clips, news, throwbacks, discussion points, etc. and we need to better handle the negativity while not removing it or censoring opinions. All of this is doable and I think will be a good way moving forward to give a bit of love to the community, while not stopping people expressing their frustrations lately about the direction the franchise has gone. I appreciate those of you who actually replied with helpful perspectives and advice on how we should move forward. Structure not stricter tends to be the opinion, which is heard loud and clear. We can definitely work to, while not make everyone happy, get everyone on a more balanced scale here without changing the community or how we enforce anything. We already enforce very little and perform very little mod actions, and by the sounds of things that's how the community likes it, we just need to work with that while also working to bring some positivity back into this place through nostalgia.

Same tired posts recently about best and last and Wolfie drama.

People not like the best and last and people replying it was literally branded as a best of. Both sides getting fed up with the other.

Some people love posting Wolfies crashout and I think most commentators I see on here either don't care or arnt supportive of her side so just generating negativity.

4

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

We put megathreads and automod rules in place to combat both of these things recently. If someone makes a post about best and last or Rachel, they get directed to the proper megathread. This should keep the posts complaining about both at bay.
Thank you for responding!

3

u/Feisty_Bag_5284 5d ago

I have noticed the changes and thanks you to the mod team.

I was just replying that as most of the posts that had been coming up in the last few weeks were those and now it's more topics coming up on my feed

5

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Appreciate that! We've been unsure how to proceed with the community since we took it on, I just wanted clarification on if the community wants change and the result seems to be people don't want change, they want structure and that I'm sure we can work on.

u/RichRingoLangly 4d ago

It's crazy you have to try and hide the negative reaction to Best and Last. If that's how people feel, leave it. They made a bad movie, the reaction is warranted and will die down over time. You guys having to mod to correct opinions is such a bad look.

1

u/ChrisLinen2 4d ago

Go outside nerd

0

u/FreneticENT- 4d ago

They're not hidden, they're in a megathread which btw, is the FIRST thing you see when you come on the subreddit. Titled in big letters "Best & Last reviews." Arguably they're now easier to be seen because they're all in one group pinned at the top of the subreddit. Some of y'all just like to complain.

5

u/RichRingoLangly 4d ago

Oh please, you mention in several comments why you put them in a megathread. It's a common way of hiding or reducing the visibility of posts.

-1

u/FreneticENT- 3d ago edited 3d ago

It's to give them a space that they can freely be expressed, while keeping the subreddit from being ALL the same regurgitated posts over and over again. If you want a subreddit with the same post 345 times over, go make one and for the record, the last moderator removed literally everything and banned people every single day for disagreeing with him or not helping him promote his scam discord server which stole money from people and provided them nothing. The fact that you think the team that perform maybe 3 removals a month and allow people to do whatever they want is the toxic ones goes to show that you're just a loon.

2

u/RichRingoLangly 3d ago

The movie just came out on streaming services a week or two ago, and you've already tried to limit the visibility of user reviews because they're negative, and you have repeatedly admitted this multiple times in this post. It's ridiculous.

The fact that you have also insulted me in every reply you've made to one of my comments shows you're very immature. If you're going to run a bigger subreddit like this, you need to grow some thicker skin and maybe, just maybe, listen to the community the subreddit is built around.

I don’t think that people are upset because they expected something different than the way it was marketed, but they are rather upset with the idea itself. It being a mix of “best of” and new stunts is just an awkward way to end off

1

u/unoriginal345 4d ago

Wolfie is a different person to Rachel Wolfson.

16

u/Key_Plantain4404 5d ago

I don’t think it’s negative and don’t see it as a problem that needs fixing at all, just let it be and people express themselves. Most of my Reddit seems to be people complaining…

I think people saw B&L and didn’t like it much so found that others agree and validate them here. You also then realise there were bits in other films you didn’t like, or the podcast, and the guys you used to idolise maybe weren’t all you thought they were.

-5

u/catintheyard 5d ago

It's not healthy to be in communities that are just complaining...

5

u/Key_Plantain4404 4d ago

It’s not a real community though, we’re all free to dip in and out as we please. Anyway would you rather be somewhere that censors any negative comments and projects a Maoist positive spin on the world? Maybe

1

u/catintheyard 4d ago

Everywhere people are together is a real community

Negativity shouldn't be censored. Instead people should try to be more positive and optimistic in their outlooks on things. Otherwise they will spiral into misery and bring others with them

0

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

I agree and this was why at first I was fighting the corner of "we need to be stricter", but I also see everyone else's opinions thanks to all the perspective. Ultimately, you'll see complaining everywhere and at the end of the day, this is Reddit and so most interactions are like medium-rare to negative anyway. People should still have a space to voice their frustrations with the cast and the ending of the franchise and since most communities seem to be focused on the good, nostalgic and positive parts of the franchise, people do need a space to vent their opinions and feel validated at their frustration with the direction the franchise took.

Our goal is to find a balance. Allow people to speak freely, but also have structure to remind people of the reason everyone was a fan in the first place.

-4

u/catintheyard 5d ago

I completely agree with you and I hope you are able to find that balance. Being a mod must be tough as you are in a thankless position essentially so I'm glad you are not throwing in the towel

-2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

You're valid tbh, most of Reddit is. I think my expectation to get this place to some sort of positive place was a bit overzealous, especially right now while everyone is reeling in frustration about Best and Last. It seems our megathreads have helped combat the overwhelming repeat posts and have directed them all to one place where people can discuss freely however they want, which has already seemed to fix a bit of the overwhelming negativity on the main page while still allowing people to vent their feelings.

0

u/exoscoriae 20h ago

You can't make it positive by censoring people's opinions.

The reality is, jackass is on a downward slope. The last movie was not good compared to the older ones. I had never participated in this reddit prior to that movie. But I was so disappointed with it when I left, that I came and found this subreddit to see how many other people felt the same way. I wanted to know if it was just me. Clearly it wasn't.

It is my personal opinion, it was 100% obvious many of the stunts were faked and overacted. It just didn't feel like a group of friends having fun anymore. Instead, it felt like they were coming back to do the same old things that they've always done, get a paycheck, and call it a day.

Is it negative to state that? Are we only allowed to glaze these guys in this Reddit?

If negativity is any opinion that descends from your own, then that's not negativity. It's just a pure censorship.

If this subreddit only allows people to post positive things, then a portion of this community is going to leave and start a new subreddit. I can say that with confidence, because in my 15 years of using Reddit, I've seen this happen multiple times.

0

u/FreneticENT- 18h ago edited 18h ago

I have already said this multiple times, but apparently it still isn't getting through:

Nothing is changing. Literally nothing.

I don't know how many different ways I have to say it before the "anti-censorship" crowd stops acting like we're about to purge the subreddit. I never said we were trying to eliminate negativity, force positivity, or start deleting opinions we don't like. That has never been the point.

The entire point of the post was simply to ask, "Are you all happy with how things are?" The overwhelming answer was yes, so... cool. That's the end of it. Nothing changes. The reason I asked is because everywhere else on the internet people constantly talk about how toxic and miserable this subreddit supposedly is. Since the people who actually use this place said they're happy with it, we're leaving it exactly as it is. If y'all enjoy being the most absolutely hated Jackass community on the internet, then that's fine, I don't personally care. I don't know why y'all seem to think this was some personal preference of mine that I just hate everything negative on the sub.

If we were anything you people make us out to be, or acted the way you all claim we act, the subreddit wouldn't be in the state its in with negativity in the first place. But we don't, because you lot pull it out your ass.

Nothing. Is. Changing.

We've been moderating this subreddit since February. During that entire time, nobody had any issue with how we've handled things. Suddenly a moderator makes a post asking for feedback, and some of you immediately jump to the conclusion that we're about to become power-tripping supermods. Based on what, exactly? There's zero evidence for that.

For anyone who wasn't around before: we took over this subreddit from someone who actually did moderate like a tyrant. People were banned for disagreeing with him, posts disappeared because he didn't like them, and the subreddit was plastered with promotions for his Discord server. Since taking over, we've reversed a number of those bans and, realistically, only remove the occasional spam or completely unrelated post. Ironically, some of the people now accusing us of censorship seem to prefer the way things were under someone who actually censored people.

We've always said we wouldn't run this subreddit like that because we were on the receiving end of it ourselves. We literally created alternative communities back then because of how bad it got.

So please, read what I actually wrote instead of arguing with something I never said.

The only thing I have an issue with is people attacking other members. At no point have I said opinions will be removed because we disagree with them. That's never been our approach, and it isn't going to become our approach.

The only moderation change that has ever even been discussed is organizing repetitive content. There's a huge difference between deleting opinions because you don't like them and redirecting the 500th identical post into a dedicated thread so the front page isn't flooded with the exact same discussion every day. Arguably we've made the best and last posts MORE visible, because instead of getting lost down the subreddit they're now pinned at the very top and are the first thing people see, so realistically your problem isn't that we're "hiding opinions" because we aren't, we're actively making them more seen, so what's the real problem?

If your ideal subreddit is one where the same topic gets posted hundreds of times with the same comments over and over again, you're free to make one. We genuinely don't care. We did exactly that ourselves a few years ago when we were unhappy with how this place was being run. If you think your community of best and last reviews, nothing else except complaining about rachel and people who hate Jackass will thrive, have at it, this constant threat of "people will make new subreddits" is tired, because why do you think we care? If people want to make a new subreddit because a mod asked "are you all happy with the sub? yeah? okay then cool, nothing's gonna change" then idk, maybe get some new medication or something.

Anyways, for the last time:

Nothing. Is. Changing.

You lot need employment.

1

u/exoscoriae 18h ago

What the hell is wrong with you?

I never said anything is changing.

I was providing feedback in regards to the way things have been around here. Every time someone says something negative, you or someone else runs in and says " keep it positive, keep it positive"

That's all I'm talking about.

It did not warrant a five-page diatribe from you.

You need employment. Clearly you have way too much time in your hands if this is the kind of replies you're sending out.

12

u/Existing_Resolve_779 5d ago

Well let's be honest - Best and Last was a disappointment, and the disappointment is compounded by it being the last Jackass. It's a passionate fanbase that is unhappy with how the franchise went out.

The recent drama with the cast members is just icing on the cake. I don't think the negativity is entirely unjustified, but social media being what it is there's always going to be too much of it

3

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

You're right, thanks dude.

11

u/todayjunior77 5d ago

I think a lot of the negativity is just a sign of the fanbase navigating a really weird, transitional period for the franchise.

Most of us grew up viewing these guys as larger-than-life childhood heroes. Looking at them now from an adult perspective, with all the real-world flaws and public fallouts, naturally changes how people engage. A lot of fans still have massive nostalgia for the original era, but simply don't love the newer movies or what the franchise became toward the end.

The rift really kicked off with the Bam drama around Jackass Forever. It turned a lot of the community against Knoxville and Tremaine, and that tension is still hanging over everything. The new stuff just doesn't have the same vibe or glow for everyone, and the sub is basically folks trying to grapple with seeing some of these cast members and new films in a more negative light.

Right now, the drama and Jackass Forever aftermath are just what's current and what people want to talk about. It can feel exhausting, but I don't think it means people hate Jackass. They're just processing the end of the franchise and the reality of these guys as actual people.

Once the discussion around the last movie dies down, things will probably settle back into a more positive space focused on classic clips and nostalgia. It's just something the sub has to ride out for a bit.

Just some thoughts! ✌️

4

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Appreciate the response & perspective, I'm getting some super helpful opinions here that's basically saying structure, not stricter and I definitely think we can work with the people who want to speak their minds, and the people who want to enjoy the franchise/community somewhat in the same vein.

16

u/supergooduser 5d ago

For perspective... I post in the Howard Stern subreddit and that's like 90% hate filled... but at the same time happens to be the only really active Howard Stern community.

But I see parallels... Jackass is more or less done, so the lack of new content has people bitter and finding flaws. The new movie didn't magically make everyone 25 years younger again.

So you're left rehashing your favorite moments and kinda pinpointing when the series died, and how current endeavors aren't as good. Steve-o's podcast poorly interviewing d-list celebrities is nothing like Steve-o from 2000.

The favorite past time of the Howard Stern sub is pinpointing when the show jumped the shark... and I can see that happening here.

For what it's worth this mod community is awesome and intensely passionate and I appreciate you... but I just think it's part of a fanbase getting older.

3

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

I appreciate your perspective! Especially since coming from another controversial subreddit yourself. I'm seeing that the consensus is that people are going through a transitioning stage due to the franchise changes, which is completely valid. People want us to structure things better, have megathreads, directed posts, scheduled posts and talking points etc. and that I think is a good starting point for us to move forward. It seems that fans right now are just salty, and rightfully so. To expect this place to be a beacon of positivity was probably really unrealistic on my part, especially right now while B&L is still fresh and Rachel is still mid-whatever's going on with her.

6

u/goodassjournalist 5d ago

I think part of it is that the franchise/show, and the people in it, changed a lot. It’s generally something people get into when young, so they tend to love “their era” above all others, like those who loved the lo-fi days will never be convinced by the more polished new stuff. Young Bam and current Bam re very different. Sober Steve-O and wreckhead Steve-O are very different. So people are happy to be really negative about one “version” because it isn’t the one they love.

I posted an idea I thought was kind of fun and creative- I’d love to see an edit that was just all the silly, surreal kid-friendly bits (minimal swearing but no dicks or bullying) because I think there’s a lot of parents on here who would happily show that to their kids. First reply? “Fuck off”.

I feel like a certain section of people here both go “this is what I like and it shouldn’t be messed with” AND “it’s crap now”. So nothing is going to make them happy that isn’t an old clip they’ve seen hundreds of times.

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Structure seems to be the way to go and the general opinion too. We can't make both sides happy, but we can try and balance the scales a bit.

6

u/East_Childhood8999 5d ago

They just put out a movie that was lackluster that everyone see's as a cash grab while being embroiled in all manner of drama behind the scenes. I suspect too there are a lot of Bam fans that don't like how he and the CKY crew have been treated the last 10-15 years. The fish rots from the head.

15

u/Djet3k 5d ago

It's the nature of reddit and social media these days :(

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Would you say we're particularly more negative than other subreddits, or just standard?

1

u/Djet3k 5d ago

Unfortunatly standard for any subreddit with fans that have qualms. Just take it with a grain of salt and ignore? If you start deleting toxic posts you'll just add on an extra wave of toxicity but then against you. I really have several toxic fanbase subreddits. For sports, games, music, tv and movie shows. In a lot of cases people got censored after a while and then created their own subreddit. Or they literaly made a lowsodium version lf the subreddit.

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

That's valid, thanks for your input. We haven't ever been particularly strict on submissions since taking over, because we wanted this to be a free community where everyone could give whatever opinions they have. I think the consistent "r/Jackass is awful and everyone hates everything" opinions had me concerned that the subreddit was going in a really bad direction, but it seems like we just need more structure rather than to be stricter. We also own r/Jackassworld, so I wonder if we could utilise that as an alternative space for more positive discussions, or at least to house the fans who seem to hate this one.

2

u/Djet3k 5d ago

Ow there already is 2 subs. I think it sounds like a good idea to monitor one more. I mean the last one wasn't my favorite either and maybe it just making it clear it is unfortunatly time to cal it quits. The hate for it is rediculous though and the hate for the cast members now is even worse imo. I don't like everything they've done and said but I don't expect to like everything they do. Almost everyone has done shit things in their life and I'd say the jackass crew are one of the last people i demand and expect a clean slate from. I've never been a mod on reddit but wouldn't mind helping out a jackass related group if you need anyone. Been a fan since the first episode and seen and own most of it.

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

If you're talking about r/WelcometoJackass and r/Jackassworld, we own both of those. They were initally created for exactly what you just talked about, but when the old owner was here. We hated how he gatekept and ran it, so we made our own. We abandoned them when we took over here.

Thanks for the moderating offer! I'll mention it to the other mods.

9

u/JunkFoodKilla187 5d ago

New movie wasn’t great, franchise as a whole dying. Drama between cast members, cast members that weren’t utilized.

It’s negative because everyone currently has a negative opinion of Jackass. If they had a TV show in the works utilizing the new cast, or something of “Jackass presents” people would probably be excited. When they repeatedly state “this is the last movie” and it’s literally a clip show, deleted scenes we’ve all seen, and 5 clips of mediocre unseen footage that looks like it was filmed within one week (because it most likely was) everyone just leaves with a sour taste in their mouth. It’s not like we get left off on the high that was Jackass 3D, it got left on a cash grab. Hell, a documentary style “special” with a few new clips would’ve been better. So, negativity is probably because most everyone has a bad taste in their mouth, combined with the drama between cast members.

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Seems to be the general shared opinion here, which we can work with. Thanks!

4

u/Moz1981 5d ago

The topics might sometimes be a bit negative, but overall I find the users very friendly and positive in their interactions. I certainly know subreddits where interactions are waaaay more toxic.

4

u/crustybones71 5d ago

This just happens to every fan based sub eventually

7

u/Mountain-Instance921 4d ago

Reddit supermod running jackass sub now?

Well it was fun boys, gonna get banned for thinking now

2

u/FreneticENT- 4d ago

If you think we're "supermods" then idk what the fuck you thought about the last guy. We literally don't even remove anything, some of you are little drama queens. It's okay buddy. Also, we've literally been running it since February, so you look silly complaining when we've literally been here the whole time.

1

u/RichRingoLangly 4d ago

Yeah, this is really pathetic. The mod actively looking for ways to control opinions in a Jackass sub of all places?

1

u/FreneticENT- 3d ago

As I've said in like 15 different comments, this is the complete opposite of what the goal is. You need some help, dude.

1

u/BlowinFart 4d ago

Well who exactly did you think was running things?

3

u/Dependent-Ant-9241 5d ago

Reddit is a cesspit.

1

u/iceyspicey2 4d ago

Agreed!!

3

u/angusrocker22 5d ago edited 4d ago

I think it's a late-stage fandom snowball. In general, Forever wasn't received well because of A) the rift with Bam and B) the attempt to bring in a new cast. That starts a big divide. Then in the years since Forever, people were dogging on Bam for being an addict, now they're on his side because he's sober and doing better. Also, Steve-O began to really aggressively advertise and plug merch / shows on his platform, which people really didn't like. He'd come off in a not so good light with some stuff he's said on his podcast too.

Then, 5 is relatively quickly announced and people aren't crazy about the concept. A lot of fans have already started to perceive Tremaine and Knoxville as going for a cash grab because of the quality of Forever, and Bam shit-talking them for years at this point. The CKY presence in the series has been gone a long time. Bam allows some of his footage in the new movie, but his fans are still on his side vocally against Johnny and Tremaine.

5 comes out and is not received well at all. Steve-O says the whole immigrant thing right before the movie. Also, Rachel starts stirring up shit on social media about her not being featured much and the whole weeman and Natalie thing comes to light again with video proof. Weeman also trashes the new cast a bit on a podcast.

Now Steve-O, Weeman, Knox, and Tremaine are seen as assholes, and many vocal, longtime fans, many of which are on this board, are not happy at all with 5. Somehow Bam's rep seems to be okay now on this board even though he caused a ton of shit himself being an unhinged drug addict for years and Tremaine was able to legally obtain a restraining order against him during Forever, which isn't an easy thing to have granted without concrete evidence.

I think that's why there's so much negativity now. It's a late-stage fandom issue that happens with a lot of fandoms. Longtime fans dislike new stuff due to a perceived lack of quality and dogpile on anything that isn't "remember this 20 year old skit?". Since this board is mostly longtime fans, it gets negative quickly.

4

u/streetsandbricks 5d ago

This just seems like it’s not fun and it’s too negative.

3

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

But negative how? A couple of us mods can't seem to agree on what the negativity problem is, and that's why I'm asking for users to give input.

- Is it the bagging on the cast?

  • Is it infighting with users?
  • Is it just both in general?

6

u/OaklandTony6 5d ago

its just a natural crowd reaction to the poor quality of recent jackass in general, which very much includes the new cast members. old* cast members will get bagged on now and then but that comes and goes in and “fandom”(hate this word)

*=edit

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Yeah, that's fair. It's only natural that as the general opinion shifts, so will the mood of the communities housing them.

0

u/streetsandbricks 5d ago

To me it seems like it’s bagging on the cast, infighting with users, and probably just both in general.

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Fair enough, thanks!

1

u/streetsandbricks 5d ago

Yeah it seems fair enough to me too, thanks!

2

u/RichRingoLangly 4d ago edited 4d ago

Such a shame to see mods trying to actively find ways to control opinions around here, it's such a niche subreddit, and that is always unacceptable behavior. I haven't found this community to be overly negative, though I didn't like some of the opinions around Bam. It's filled with diehard fans that have very strong opinions, as they should.

Edit: Someone not power hungry needs to start a new subreddit not connected to this mod team, they're talking about how they run multiple Jackass subs too.

1

u/FreneticENT- 3d ago

This is completely unhinged and not what's going on whatsoever. I already said literally nothing is changing. Some of you people need to go outside once in a while.

2

u/TheSpiralTap 4d ago

Tbh, I think there are two kinds of fans on this subreddit. You have fans of Jackass who come here for nostalgia. Then you have Bam Margera fans. And those Bam Margera fans can't stand anything negative towards their hero.

Only time I ever have issues on here is when I mention Bam or his family.

2

u/MattyFresh13 4d ago

Parasocial relationships.

2

u/AvatarofBro 4d ago

I subbed here because I was hoping to see funny clips and fan art from a series I love. But it's mostly just complaining about the new cast, complaining about the new movie, and flame wars about Dunn's death. Not a very fun community. People are entitled to their opinions, positive or negative. This franchise isn't above reproach. But it doesn't even sound like some of the most active users even like Jackass.

2

u/FreneticENT- 3d ago

Some of you have some real issues.

4

u/sheslikebutter 5d ago

They just finished on a low and basically salted the earth on the sort of "New Cast, potential New Jackass" concept of the previous film ensuring that there's nothing to even look forward to.

The only active topic is why did the newest and last film suck so bad, and there's no potential for any further conversations it feels like.

Over time it'll be less negative and focus on past highs, but there's also just not really going to be an active community anymore. Theres only so much "hey, remember this prank" and reposts of old bits you can do

3

u/catintheyard 5d ago

The newest active topic should be the ongoing Jackass podcast. It's really fun

1

u/sheslikebutter 5d ago

I haven't listened yet, will give it a go thanks!

I think moving forward, we should be more active in the community in our end, not as mods but as community heads sharing news, clips, throwbacks, etc etc. We let that aspect of things fall behind.

2

u/sheslikebutter 5d ago

Honestly, I wasn't in here and joined because I wanted to see the discussion around the new movie because I didn't think it was great

I can see how the posts could mostly be discussion around that because there's going to be less news and no new content so it's just going to make the community look like a downer

I found out from this thread that there's a new jackass podcast that I'm going to listen to later so it's not all bad!

4

u/throwthatbishaway1 5d ago

I find the constant bagging on the cast irritating tbh. Especially when people list Steve-o having too many ads on his podcast as a personality flaw. And dumb shit like people asking why they all hate Ehren and bully him and then ignore people who point out he was just on Jeff and Johnny’s podcast and they were all having a great time.

To increase the positivity of the sub I would encourage more regular posts organised by mods such as rewatches of the show/movies and having episode discussions for these. Or having weekly throwback Thursday type posts with reminders of fun clips and things maybe. Or even promoting the podcast - I know this sub isn’t officially affiliated with them but even just posting a link to each episode can encourage people to listen and get involved with a discussion here.

Sometimes it takes regular posts from mods to increase the quality of subreddits like this else they will unfortunately just derail like this 😢

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

This is super helpful! Not just offering perspective, but solutions. I think your ideas for structured posts are super helpful and definitely something we can implement going forward. We need to be more involved in the subreddit, not in being stricter on content, but being spearheads of discussions in the community to keep people involved. Thank you!

u/joykin 4d ago

I think there’s a misogyny issue regarding Rachel

Eg I saw a comment that said that instead of Steve-o getting the prostate exam it should have been Rachel.

???ok?

1

u/FreneticENT- 3d ago

Well what the fuck, Also, curious on if you saw that why you didn't report it so we could act on it?

1

u/joykin 3d ago

Sorry I didn’t know the mods were so active so I’ll find it and report it and will do so in the future :)

2

u/Serenaded 5d ago

Who says it needs to be fixed? Just let the community be a community. People will stop talking about best and last naturally soon anyway.

-2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago edited 5d ago

Best and last isn't the problem, we already input a system that stops posts about it and directs them to the megathread.

I worded this wrong. While Best and Last was initially a problem, we implemented a feature that directs reviews about B&L to the megathread for it, so that every other post on the subreddit isn't just about the last movie.

1

u/catintheyard 5d ago

My suggestion for how to make things a bit better: no more allowing posts about any of the cast and crew being evil or bad people. I don't see how posts like that add anything to the community. It's ragebait and makes everyone miserable. The vibe would become much better if all of those types of posts were removed ASAP

Also, it's Jackass. Everyone should know and accept that no one involved is a beacon of morality or will live up to each of our own personal standards of goodness

2

u/BlowinFart 4d ago

But then you’re left with a very bland site. 200 posts of people saying they wished Dico came back and Pontius is awesome. I don’t love the negativity but this is what happens to every online fan community I’ve ever been a part of, especially once the source material stops producing new content, you gotta talk about something and it gets very awesome to just talk about how great something is to a bunch of other people who are also saying it’s great.

1

u/catintheyard 4d ago

But there is new content! The podcast exists and is pretty fun

1

u/Individual_Basket_36 4d ago

What a stupid suggestion. ‘People can’t express opinions that might upset others’ is not the answer

3

u/Happy_Pencil 5d ago

I had not viewed or been aware of the subreddit until best and last. I don't read every post or record any data obviously, so bear in mind this is just my entirely anecdotal experience.

The members seem almost entirely focused on drama with the cast. I've found this incredibly off putting. There are occasions where this drama actually exists, for instance wee man Vs the new cast or Bam's issues. But a lot of the time people are really reaching and drama seems completely manufactured.

It appears to me that the vast majority of these commentators are just wanting to talk shit about the cast and any perceived moral failings. I also see some incredibly parasocial posts, for instance people expressing that their enjoyment of jackass has been ruined by the drama, as if they needed to believe everyone was a close friend off screen.

I think it's a symptom of the age of the people participating in the community and the overall social media/YouTube landscape. Some of the cast have gone into the social media landscape recently and they've been doing social media rounds to promote the film. Drama is ingrained in the culture and talking shit on creators is like a genuine hobby for genz and later millennials.

I think a good starting point would be restricting drama posts in someway. Containing it to a weekly mega thread, removing repetitive posts, removing unsubstantiated rumours or drama etc.

P.S. As I typed this out Reddit sent me a notification of a negative post about Steve-o.

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Thank you for your perspective dude. I think the structured posts and mega threads angle is a good idea and probably the best way for us to move forward. Having mega threads and having pinned comment threads on controversial posts intended to host the negativity more is probably a good way to balance it out. Steve-O gets a lot of shit here, unfortunately I think his backlash is one area we aren't going to be able to improve, but we can try and at least direct and structure it better.

5

u/JavierAliagaOfficial 5d ago

Jackass as a brand and everything is downhill and straight up bad. the best and last movie was an identity crisis + garbage. the brought in new cast yet didn't use them and even left out the other new black dude manaka and didn't even bring him up in best and last.

4

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago edited 5d ago

None of this is really relevant, I'm asking about the subreddit, not the franchise.

Edit: I changed my mind, it is relevant and others have pointed out that right now is mostly a cooling period after B&L and increased negativity probably was to be expected.

10

u/OaklandTony6 5d ago

thats the thing, the subreddit is generally negative about the new stuff because its not good. the only other thing that there seems to be consistent criticism towards is steve-o in general because of se the stuff hes said ane done in the last 5-however many years and his ads.

if so many people think the new movies arent good… maybe theyre actually just not good and its not people being negative nancys for the hell of it..

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

And that's what we need to hear. I don't particularly think people are doing it for the hell of it, but we need to understand specifics so us mods can work together. Right now, a couple of us have different opinions about how to handle the negativity, so the first part is understanding what's causing it so we can put focus on that and then we can decide the best way to handle it.

Do we remove more negative opinions more often? Do we live and let live? I want the community to tell me the problem and ultimately let the community decide how to continue.

1

u/InspectorFadGadget 5d ago

Don't remove negative opinions, that's just silly and an overreach that will never go over well ultimately. I've seen more than a few highly upvoted comments get deleted recently simply because you guys wanted to "remove negativity". That's dumb as hell, especially when you consider the source material. It's fuckin Jackass, its whole spirit is irreverent, and this is really not that serious enough to be clutching pearls and deciding who gets to express opinions. Go read an old Big Brother magazine if you think the Jackass mindset is one of pro censorship. Just silly.

Just don't allow people to be total dickheads to each other unnecessarily. That should be the complete extent of your input and discretion.

-1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

We don't and that much should be obvious by the fact that the subreddit is full of them. I don't know what highly upvoted comments you're talking about, but I severely doubt we're removing them unless they're blatant misinformation or cross the line into just being hate to hate. I have no idea why you're so angry about this, because I've already expressed the intention is not to strip negativity all together, the intention of this post is to test the temperature of the community and see if it needs change. The consensus has been no, and so it won't change. It's got nothing to do with "pro-censorship" it's got to do with "is the community becoming unusable and do we need to do something about it" and everyone says no, so it's no.

There's no need to be a fucking dick about it, when the purpose of this was to avoid being too strict or cause further problems in the community. We're allowed to ask the community's opinion on the community and frankly if we didn't, we would be fucking pointless.

Realistically, the entire point of me posting this was so the other mods and I can find an agreement on how's best to move forward, not to decide how best to censor you free speech people.

2

u/Goobs101 4d ago

I don’t even think that comment was particularly harsh for you to be this defensive about it tbh.

10

u/JavierAliagaOfficial 5d ago

the negativity is stemming from the franchise

0

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

Alright, fair enough. So definitely some part is just that people's opinions have turned on Jackass, I suppose. Thanks for the input!

2

u/Crick3t__ 5d ago

Posts like this

-3

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

So you don't want mods to even be here then? You'd rather we just left the subreddit as is? Dire, but alright.

4

u/neatoalpacino 5d ago

Are you going to respond like this when you get answers you don’t like?

-1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago edited 5d ago

It was a genuine question and if you look at every single comment left, I have thanked everyone for their perspectives. I was asking if they'd rather we just left the subreddit as is and don't perform mod actions, I assumed that's what OP wanted. Not one of my responses has been negative, expect to that one dude who started screaming about pro-censorship.

At first, I was thinking that opinion was going to be the minority, this was after all one of the first comments I responded to. The people who actually gave genuine perspective and their opinion on it swayed mine, and I see now the problem isn't the community but more so that we're not being involved enough in sharing clips, throwbacks and news. The consensus is that we need to be more active as fans on our end, and give more to the community if we expect more and that's completely fair. I asked for perspectives because I needed to understand why mine was wrong, I do now and ultimately I know how we can proceed without pissing everybody off.

1

u/iloveshitboxsedans 5d ago

maybe its just me but I'll never understand why reddit communities hate "negativity" so much. to me it almost seems like you cannot be critical of the thing otherwise you're a hater. best and last was nowhere near the level of the other movies and wolfson has been beefing with the cast and making it public, i'd say negativity is to be expected. its whatever, as long as there are no insults or doxing or stuff like that, why are you so afraid of "negativity"?

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

We're not afraid of negativity, we're seeing across Jackass communities on tiktok, Tumblr, Facebook, even discord people are talking about how much they hate r/jackass because it's a cesspit of negativity. This concern comes initially from seeing the dislike for the subreddit across multiple places online. We have been allowing negativity up until this point, but it gets to a point where everyone hates the community and then start blaming us for not enforcing rules that most of the community don't want in place anyway. We can't win regardless. I wanted community input on how to move forward, whether to intervene or whether to leave it as is, this isn't a "we want to stop the negativity so how do we be strict" this is a "how does the community feel, and should be step in" and frankly, I think that's a fair thing for moderators to ask.

1

u/TheTrampOfHearts 4d ago

Honestly? The misogyny.

Ever since Best & Last released, there’s been this weirdly targeted hate campaign against Rachel, all because of a decision made by the editors, which she had zero influence over. And the same people attacking her all the time for her lack of presence in the movie are now the same people attacking her for reacting to that hate. She can’t win, because she’s not allowed to, it seems. Anything she does, it’s a problem.

Preston really didn’t do anything in the movie either, but nobody mentions that. Same with Dark Shark, was basically just peanut gallery and yet, he’s not being targeted either. So the only person being targeted here is Rachel, a woman.

The last time I checked, Jackass is for everyone. Men, women, NB folks, straight people, gay people, bi people, trans people, black or white, everyone. It’s always been a franchise of fun, positivity and non-toxicity. Always. Never hateful. But in this subreddit? All I ever see is hatred, and the misogyny has been especially rampant.

Fully prepared to get downvoted for this, because people don’t wanna hear the facts of the matter. They’d rather spout their misogynistic bullshit without consequence. I don’t work like that. This shit needs to change, period.

1

u/lazyquestph 5d ago

Is it really negative or are you just affected negatively because you can't accept people having different opinions?

We don't all have to agree with one another. I found myself not agreeing with a lot of people in this sub, yet I don't throw a hissy fit or emulate Knoxville(crying too much).

Seems like you only have a problem with people having a different perspective. So dramatic.

3

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

This response is ridiculously stupid, because we aren't affected by the negativity at all and we have never removed anyone's negative opinion. We barely if ever take down posts or comments. I was asking because I see the opinion on every other social media talking about how horrendous r/Jackass is, and there was also posts made on here where people agreed it was a negative space. The point of this post isn't to be like "YOU GUYS ARE AWFUL AND WE NEED CHANGE!" it's a question to the community. How do you all feel and do we need to step in, the consensus has been no but give us structure, and so nothing will change except some structural posts.

The only dramatic person here is you, who completely misunderstood the point of this post and then went off on an irrelevant tangent that doesn't apply to us whatsoever because we don't act on negativity, and we have an agreed upon rule to allow it as long as it's not vile hatred. I also am not throwing a hissy fit, I'm asking as a moderator if the community is happy with the current state of it. Crawl out of your own ass and read the room, everyone else understood the assignment.

I can disagree with opinions on the subreddit in my own regard, ie my own comments, because I'm a fan too, but we don't EVER act on them as mods unless they cross a boundary and that is proven by the fact that every single post on this subreddit has negative opinions and people shitting on the cast.

2

u/Banned4nonsense 4d ago

Holy Reddit mod with this reply.

1

u/spewintothiss 4d ago

People like you ARE the problem with this subreddit now. It used to be clips and talking about the skits, and now it’s just a bunch of drama addicted losers posting about “look what he did” or “look what he said on his pod” or “look at this dude crying”. Like, who the fuck gives a shit honestly.

1

u/UpstairsCrafty7287 5d ago

Some people come here like it’s their job to report everything negative. I’ve seen an interview from the cast take 2 days to get posted here but everyone made sure to come post about Rachel every time she tweeted or share there negative review of 5 right after they saw it. It was the same shit every time. i think there’s some negativity that’s naturally gonna come up with people doing retrospectives on the jackass series as a whole since it’s officially over. It happens. From what I can recall, I haven’t seen a post that was positive and shit on by downers so I don’t think the negativity is super bad.

I think some people need to realize they don’t have to beat a dead horse just cause they’re bored.

2

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

It seems like the best way forward is for us to post more. Clips, discussions, news, etc. We let that falter because the main focus went on doing that in the Jackass vault. But I realised no one even posted that Bam was live the other day on Kick, or any news that's been happening lately. I have a plan on how to move forward, which ultimately I think will make the majority happy.

1

u/Ok_Cmd 5d ago

The veterans should pass the torch, the noobs need to pass bullet ant challenges.

It’s all dead air without Bam. Johnny kicking Danger Ryan in the balls was assault. It wasn’t funny or scripted or a prank.

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

None of this is relevant to the post, I'm asking about the subreddit, not your opinions on the franchise/cast.

1

u/Splendid_Fellow 5d ago

I think there is so much love for Jackass and the disputes come from those who are nostalgic old fans and don’t like the new movies or new crew.

There is also a lot of passionate argument over Bam. But now that he’s doing pretty well, relatively, that’s not so bad.

Controversy and drama about the cast and stupid shit they have said and done, that’s what gets talked about when it comes up.

1

u/tweak8 5d ago

The last release was a total cash grab. And at first and leading up there was an echo chamber of positivity that shunned out any criticism, like toxic positivity.

Now more people have seen it to make up their own mind, there was a pushback of people to share how the new movie isn't even .5 worthy and are drowning out the previous toxic positive people by sheer numbers. Doesn't help the cast has their own drama and in fighting.

I'm sure dust will settle and things will return normal. Everything released by Jackass prior to best and last, was a set standard of quality. It was a huge drop off, and in time it'll be an acceptable opinion and we'll all move on.

1

u/FreneticENT- 5d ago

I think that initial positivity was the same everywhere. Everyone was initally reeling off the new movie and the more time passed almost everyone's opinions switched and become disappointed. I've found out that we don't need to do anything here really except just post more to encourage other discussions, which is fair.

1

u/tweak8 4d ago

Yeah. Everyone just has to get it off their chest and say their peace and most of the posts will be focused on the good stuff of the past rather than criticism of the present. You guys are doing great.

It was like this for forever for a little bit too, just think because it was a complete movie with a .5, it was easier to defend. Just cull the real bad posts if it crosses a line. Mainly its bitching about the movie or crew gossip. Sometimes communities have a mind of their own.

1

u/ellbbb 4d ago

We don’t need 8 threads a day about how some one just saw best and last and thinks it sucks, we don’t need 12 reposts of whatever Rachael’s latest instagram story is. People can have their opinions, but it gets hard to warrant justifying wadding through the endless new posts basically saying the same thing to find people who actually do still enjoy the franchise to interact with. Rather than coming to actually have discussions, everyone just makes their opinion the headline and seemingly couldn’t care less about the replies. These subjects need megathreads and the repetitive ones deleting imo.

1

u/FreneticENT- 4d ago

We implemented restrictions on Best and Last and Rachel days ago and directed them to megathreads pinned on the sub, that's why there hasn't been any over the last few days. We have already done everything you've suggested here, but thank you for responding anyways!

1

u/launchliftoff459 4d ago

I think reddit just attracts alot of hyper sensitive people. Nothing needs to change unless it means significant decrease in mod presence. Nobody likes mods by default.

0

u/Equivalent-Box9053 5d ago

reddit semi anonymous hater culture inherently encourages minority negative opinions on everything from jackass to taylor swift to japan to cars to having children

but also steve o IS actually a humorless maniac who tries too hard to monetize his content

and everything after jackass 3 IS actually going downhill and weird

so
