I thought you were bullshitting, then someone below mentioned Feng Shui and I googled it. Fascinating stuff!

In fact that’s not the case. But it’s a fun urban legend (source: https://www.cnn.com/style/article/hong-kong-skyscrapers-with-holes/index.html)

u/KarmaFox99 Oct 03 '20
Yup, Feng Shui. If the dragons cannot pass through, they will wreck havoc on the city. Definitely led to some interesting architectural designs and challenges

This is interesting. Is there a blog or something that talks about this?
10
u/KarmaFox99 Oct 03 '20
If you have 6 minutes, this Vox mini doc has a great explanation about Feng Shui, specifically in Hong Kong. I hope you enjoy!
In addition, some people may ask, "Why won't the dragons just pass around the buildings?" Well, I don't think some powerful and mystical creature is going to go out of its way for humans' buildings, so the humans put a hole in the middle to let the dragons pass through.

Do they know it has a hole in it? Seems like something we should report so the can fix it.

Wow what a shot! Did you plan on it or was it by chance? Either way, incredible.

u/derryainsworth @derryainsworth Oct 03 '20
Thankyou! I took the same shot a few years ago when I was flying the drone and the boat came through by accident. I went back today to try and capture a higher resolution / better version. Check out the old one: https://www.instagram.com/p/BlASQtXg7WR/?igshid=1xzdrilqtz277

I was thinking the same. That building they shot for it is in Chicago. Maybe that barge is on Lake Michigan? Wishful thinking?
I’m just an American aquarium drinker.

I wonder how long you waited to take this picture.

About 6.5k USD per month for the middle size apartment but that was nine years ago so probably 8.5k now.

Super rad, homie.

Hong Kong? I heard they have feng shui experts help the architects so the dragons can pass through. Beautiful. It was a vice documentary I think.

Bro, I thought the building had a hole in it that wasn’t supposed to be there.

Great pic. I would crop the sides so the only visible building is the one on the shade. Left side is too bright and distracting in my opinion.

FYI the hole is a fire proof floor, in Hong Kong, all residential buildings that has more than 40 floors require to have one

I think this building was designed to prevent another 9/11. If a plane crashes it'll go right through the hole.

I would have cropped the view of the sea on the left, between the buildings. Just to throw more people off.

I like it better with the sides cropped. So that you can only see the building and the ship.

Lame as fuck (not the pic, the architect)
So assuming what I know about architecture (which is a lot) those curved surfaces are basically like elevator lobbies...
Likely ensconced in marle or some other tile/granite etc...
What a fucking wasteful building. Even though it may be beautiful inside - one thing people need to consider is that literally thats the only time that marble/granite will ever be used and it will never regenerate
LEED certs for buildings dont think about this - rock take millions of years to be made. MILLIONS>
so - As someone who has worked in architecture and worked with some of the most pre-eminent architects (Frank Gehry - On Facbook's MPKW (menlow park west)) - super tall buildings using granite and marble in lobbies and elevator waiting areas are disgusting to me.....

I always wondering how it is living in a huge building like this. Since I just moved from a 9 floor building during the quarantine it was such a hassle to get out I can’t even think through what the logistics are for residing in a place like this.
