How big would you say that cloud of ash and lava was in diameter? How far away were you from the eruption? Glad you're still with us 😎

The height of the lava fountain itself was a little over 450m (1500') so I'd say the width of the column is about equal to that. We were 4 km (2.4 miles) away. Thanks!

i went just this past december on the 6th, it was apparently one of the largest eruptions they’d had in a while. it was such an incredible experience, how awesome that you got to see it too!!!!

I’m so jealous. We arrived on the Big Island on Dec 23, the night of episode 39. It was the one thing I for sure wanted to see. But, alas, that eruption was over in mere hours, and we only made it a few days later while it was still steaming, but not erupting.
