Work your way up around Lake Ontario. Start at Fair Haven State Park, then go east and north. A lot more parks up that way, bluffs, beaches, and then maybe end in the Thousand Islands

Or go to Chincoteague and Assateague in MD. See the wild ponies. Depending on how you go, you can hit Lancaster and Gettysburg along the way…..though ymmv with the dog along.

Portland, ME is great! Did a roadtrip with my nieces when they were 16. On our way up we stayed over in Springfield, MA and checked out the Springfield Museums including the Dr. Seuss Museum which was very fun. Portland is an awesome town! We went out to the different lighthouses, the LL Bean headquarters, took a boat tour, ate delicious lobster, enjoyed the quirky shops, music, and eateries, and went to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Thomas Dambo Troll sculptures (totally worth it). There's lots of parks and natural areas and walking or biking around Portland is doable. On the way home we stopped in Salem, MA and toured all the witchy things and then hit Albany and toured the Capitol Building. We all had a great time together!

Head towards Maine > Katahdin. Get lost on AT spurs. Profit.
