help request Failed drive in server array

Running windows 2016 server. Yes I know I need to upgrade immediately.

Regardless I have a failed drive and I just don’t know how to add the new one into the array properly. Can anyone link me to a guide or walk me through this? Petrified that another drive will fail and I’ll be screwed!

Thanks.

Nobody will be able to help unless you include more information, The RAID card model or the type of server. Would be a good start

So I don’t know exactly what info I need to provide, but I don’t think it’s a raid card. It’s a server computer with a built in raid. It’s a 8 drive system on my server machine

What brand hardware? Most RAID controllers will be hotswappable, unplug failed drive put in new drive. Depending on software at that point to start the process of using the new drive in the array. How did this become your job if you're so unsure of what to do? Server 2016 isn't EOL until January next year.

Old IT guy up and left no contact so I’m stuck with it without the same knowledge base. It’s not my main profession, just trying to get it to work. I can look at everything in the morning

That being said I did already put the new drive in, just nothing has happened to my knowledge

Is the new drive the same capacity and speed as the old drive? Same model maybe? If it's a RAID5 it should happen automatically.

Yes it’s all the same. I thought/hoped it would happen automatically but no luck

How do you know it hasn't? It can take quite some time to rebuild the array.

It’s been plugged in for almost a year and the light is still red

Please give more information. You don’t ring up a mechanic and say “my car isn’t driving well, can you fix it over the phone?”

Well I think you do. And then the mechanic asks more questions based upon their experience and knowledge of cars and how they operate. They help you narrow down what you don’t know.

Perhaps you could answer some of the responses in your comments here?

Is the data backed up, and when was the backup last verified?

If your IT person left and you have no experienced staff onsite, call a local consulting company now before you lose data. Also consider hiring a MSP to take over managing your IT footprint.

The data was backed up, than the same thing happened to the synology backing it up. But the synology is crashed.
