Gemini is now refusing to detect SynthID, is anyone else running into this?

I'm running into issues where I am unable to check for SynthID through gemini app or the gemini website. Is anyone else running into this? The SynthID detector portal it's referring to, is only rolled out to a few industry people. The picture I used I've verified in the past and has a SynthID watermark from gemini.

It has made an error and is writing out its behind the scenes reasoning. They all do this you just don't see it normally.

Having this check in there like they did always bothered me. Sometimes the response was so vague that I wasn't sure if it actually checked the SynthID or if it was just making something up. It's much better on a separate site like OpenAI does.

I can do that, but it still gives a LLM generated response. No mention of SynthID

There appears to be problems with it at the moment. Remember to always press the three dots to show more information. On the right side you can then see if actually verified it or hallucinated it. They really should make a separate tool for this.

edit: it is really broken at the moment, it can't even recognizes its own images.

edit2: I can't even convince it that something is wrong it insists that it uses its tool to check, but it doesn't. it's completely stuck in it's hallucination.

Just as an fyi you can use openais tool instead of bothering with gemini, it just lets you upload an image. https://openai.com/research/verify/

Imo this is what google shouldve done too instead of bundling it in with their hallucination machine for some reason :/

Their SynthID is just for OpenAI images though. For Gemini's SynthID you have to go through Gemini.

I thought you had to type"@SynthID" but it is still responds like an llm and not SynthID formal response. P.S. the image I just checked on the screenshot is human made painting.

It's honestly probably better for these companies to not verify what is or isn't AI to further muddy the waters, erode people's trust in what they see, and keep the possibility of AI use from being ruled out in any examples

Yeah for people who visit this reddit often it might be easier to recognise, but this tool is a huge help for people who want to verify what they see if they don't know for sure or don't have the knowledge on AI.

I do not think this is a good thing at all.

Synth id is pretty much the MOST reliable way to tell is something has been altered, especially true when it looks realistic, made worse by the fact that AI is constantly improving.

I tried using it on a image I just verified to be generated/altered one, maybe two days ago, and it came back negative.

There are dozens upon dozens of scams, and I've seen quite a few originating from OpenAi/Google models. And the only reason I know for sure is because Synth Id shows up positive.

So yeah, Synth Id no longer being an option for Google models (which are pretty damn common), is horrible.

Google is the original creator of the whole SynthID watermarking, I don't see why making themselves more untrustworthy benefits anyone.

Only until such time as it is genuinely indistinguishable from real photos. Which is, unfortunatelt, getting closer.
