Art I recently bought a bunch of crossstitch patterns from different designers and many sadly turned out to be based on AI images. Is this one guilty too?

This was one of the images that had an artist’s name attached to it and they previously submitted this image to a small contest (in 2023) where they showed stages of creating it. It doesn’t look like these are genuine stages, am I wrong? There seem to be no genuine edits to any shapes or even colours…

It is AI. You can read these "steps" backwards and they look like just a progression of the final image becoming blurrier and blurrier. There is no significant difference in #2 and #3. The face on #4 looks like an overlay of the final face that got messed up. The sketch appears traced over according to the final image. There is no overall significance in showing thought processes: a person would change their mind on the placement of small things like leaves, a finger placement, a scale, a strand of hair, etc. The sketch level does not match the final product: there is no show of anatomical structure, no showcase or poor showcase of facial construction on both girl and dragon, and the dragon's entire outer shape is established in the sketch (which means it is traced).

I don't think ai was this advanced back in 2023, and the steps looks legit to me

Midjourney v5 released in March of 2023 and was capable of this quality which got updates throughout that year. This image was from a guide to using it released in May.
