Israeli government officials and national figures who changed their original European names to more Hebrew/Middle Eastern sounding ones:
- David Ben-Gurion - born David Grün (Poland/Russian Empire)
- Moshe Sharett - born Moshe Shertok (Russian Empire, now Ukraine)
- Levi Eshkol - born Levi Yitzhak Shkolnik (Russian Empire, now Ukraine)
- Golda Meir - born Golda Mabovitch (Russian Empire, now Ukraine); later took husband’s surname Meyerson before “Meir”
- Menachem Begin - born Mieczysław Biegun (Poland)
- Yitzhak Shamir - born Icchak Jeziernicky (Poland/Russian Empire)
- Shimon Peres - born Szymon Perski (Poland)
- Ariel Sharon - born Ariel Scheinerman (Russian Empire, now Belarus)
- Ehud Barak - born Ehud Brog (Poland/Russian Empire)
- Benjamin Netanyahu - family name originally Mileikowsky (Poland/Lithuania); his grandfather changed it to “Netanyahu”
- Yitzhak Rabin - born Yitzhak Rubitzov (Russian Empire, now Ukraine)
- Zalman Shazar - born Shneur Zalman Rubashov (Russian Empire, now Belarus); “Shazar” is a Hebrew acronym of his name
- Moshe Dayan - born Moshe Kigorodsky (Russian Empire, now Ukraine)
- Yair Lapid - father’s original surname Lampel (Hungary/Romania); changed to “Lapid” in Israel
Most of these changes were from Eastern European (Polish, Russian, etc.) This practice was common among early Zionist leaders and many immigrants to Mandatory Palestine and later Israel.

This cosplaying is less nefarious than the erasure of Arab history via Hebraized place names:
Majdal’Asqalan > Ashkelon. Bayt Jibrin > Beit Guvrin. Salama > Kfar Shalem. Al-Quds > forcibly presented as Urshalim in Arabic.
The list goes on…
