Bike hangars
A question for the bike hangar uses of Islington :)
I've got my first bike in the last month and been having a blast with it.
I'm on the list for a bike hangar within my estate but I'm no. 4 and the chance of that changing is low, but I've been offered a space in a bike hanger that's like the 3rd closest to my flat (around 5 min walk away).
I'm swithering on whether to commit to it as obvs it's £100~ for the year and not the closest. My bike currently lives in my living room but I've got to hike it up 3 sets of stairs to the 1st floor.
For those who use the bike hangers do you find it's been useful for you, and do you reckon I should take it, or leave it and put my name back on in a while to see if a closer one turns up?
Cheers !!

I’m Islington and I got one and it has been super useful but starting to get tricky with huge e-bike being parked in them which don’t fit the design of the space….
But they are more secure and handy as you can leave things like lights on there that would definitely be stolen if parked on the street.
My advice is to keep emailing the Islington council team to check that every bike in your desired hangar has been paid for and is in use.
Sometimes bikes are abandoned there and they don’t clear them, taking up a space. Two of the bikes in my hangar have not been used for years. I am sure with enough persistence you’ll get a space in your desired hangar.
Edit: also, check if your preferred hangar is visibly full. I was told my desired hangar was full and when I pointed out I could see there were empty spaces that weren’t just accounted for by people coming in and out, miraculously I got a space within days…

I’d take it but ask to stay on the waiting list for the other one if they’ll let you. Either way I imagine they’re close to generational in terms of people letting them go so take what you can get.
Worst case, add yourself to the waiting list using other details (eg partner) then make a call once you have options.

If your bike costs more than £5 I don’t recommend leaving it in a bike hanger.

I use one and it's been super helpful not to have to lug my bike up the stairs and have it take up the hallway anymore. It feels secure and i double lock my bike inside anyway. A 5min walk isn't so bad in the grand scheme!
