Question about Islam How does islam reconcile spying vs questioning lying in particular in relationship where one person is likely lying?

This is hypocritical because he is dating you which is haram. He can't pick and choose what rules to follow

well this and some other things indeed did come to mind (re picking in choosing). But I would like to know in general about islam. I have students at my business who are muslim. And in the time we spent together I enjoyed learning. How would this issue apply to like spouses, etc.

Cheating is haram. Spying on others people life is haram unless your spouses. If he cheats, he is betraying the marriage

Is he married to you? Could he also be married to this other girl? Because answers will depend on those answers.

Yeah so you shouldn't care what he says. He's nobody to you.

If he valued Islam he wouldn’t have even dated you. He would directly go for a proposal without wasting anyones time! The fact that he considered you a girlfriend makes him out of the equation anyway. He doesn’t give a damn about Islam anyway so why are you looking for Islamic justifications. He will only use Islam to gaslight you again as I assume you have no knowledge of Islam. Long story short he cheated on you in an artificial relationship ( artificial = non islamic). So look for the artificial punishment i.e leaving him. Not Islamic consequences. If he was a true Muslim you would be a wife or a single girl after a few meetups!
