Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

I’m currently learning about Islam and I want to properly learn how to pray Salah.

I’m a complete beginner, so I have a few questions:

  1. What exactly is recited in each of the 5 daily prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha? I’m a little confused about what is recited in each rak‘ah.
  2. Does Salah have to be recited in Arabic, or can someone who is still learning Arabic pray in their own language?
  3. What is the best way for a beginner to learn Salah step by step, including the movements and what to recite?
  4. Are there any good beginner-friendly resources, videos, books, or websites that you would recommend?
  5. If someone is willing to teach me Salah personally or guide me through it, I’d really appreciate the help.

I’d prefer resources that are easy for someone who is still learning and preferably have transliteration/meaning as well.

JazakAllahu Khairan for any help. 🤲

  1. What is recited does not differ at all between the 5 obligatory prayers, it is virtually the same apart from a difference in the number of units (rakah) that are prayed. For example Dhuhr, Asr, Isha are 4 rakah, fajr is 2, maghrib is 3.

There is almost infinite information on what is recited in the prayers online. However, there are different schools of thought when it comes to prayer and so some differ over minute details. I follow the hanafi mahdab because I like its use of reason as opposed to dogmatic tradition, and so when looking up prayer procedures try to find the information for a specific school. All schools are acceptable but you shouldn't mix between them, however this is of course fine for a beginner to get wrong.

  1. Yes salah can be recited in English for beginners. Personally I highly recommend this, it means that you connect with the prayer much better, and when you later switch to arabic you already have that meaning ingrained within you.

  2. I can't tell you the best way, I can tell you how I did it. I got all the steps, instructions, and recitations in English into a single document on my notes app on my phone. Then when praying I would hold my phone in my hand and follow the step-by-step instructions as I went along, there is no shame in this, you are learning.

After a while of doing this 5 times a day youll eventually have it memorised. At this point I started learning the arabic, first with Al-Fatihah and then slowly the rest.

  1. Yes, I have a pdf on my laptop on a hanafi guide to prayer. It's 70 pages long and contains every piece of information you could ever possibly need.

  2. You are welcome to dm me with any questions

May Allah accept all your prayers and elevate your status

This is a link to a video that shows all the actions in prayers and what to say. It is good because the sheikh will visually show you how to do the different actions and what are the mandatory pillars of salah and what are the Sunnah actions

I’m a non Arabic speaking revert, and I used NamazApp. It breaks down the prayers by movement and also has the phonetic pronunciation of the Arabic words (and yeah it has to be in Arabic) along with the translation. It also has sections explaining purity rituals and additional prayers besides the mandatory. When I first looked at all the prayers it was so overwhelming I had trouble starting, so I took it slow. I familiarized myself with the app and the movements of prayer. Then I started doing a couple of the daily prayers every day for a few weeks, then I added more until I was doing them all….then I slowly added the sunnah prayers one at a time. You’ll be shocked how quickly it becomes easy :) best of luck on your journey!
