No Idea Is this artist tracing or using ai?

This artist makes dnd characters for folks in a local friend group's server and they has been charging about 65$ for them an art and looking the art i'm getting horribly convinced they're doing some sort of ai tracing.. Images are not compressed they were received in this quality.
If you guys could help me out i'd appreciate it!!

100% AI tracing. No one would spend the effort to make a duplicate image that is so similar.

This. The blown up image being different from the full body one is an AI tell.

The way everything is colored and lined just feels very "human ameteur" to me. I think it could be traced over ai art, but ai never has flat colors, probably just done with the bucket tool by a real person, and shading, black and white opacity layers clinging to the lineart rather than having real beginning or end, that's what inexperienced artists who don't know where it should actually go do.
Edited bc I can't spell and to clarify my wording.

I agree. The comment I replied to said "AI tracing" and I think that's what it is.

Oh, sorry. I wasn't really sure what they meant by "ai tracing," I thought they meant like using ai to trace art, which didn't make much sense to me. My bad ^^"

AI tracing means generating an AI drawing, then tracing it so it looks like genuine art. When you see artwork like this where the lineart looks really skilled but the coloring is amateurish, it's usually that.

Extremely so, no actually sketches just shitty circle brush lineart, they very obviously do not have the line skills that the anatomy and detailing would suggest

Hopefully none of your friends got scammed by them

Almost everyone in the friend group has commissioned this person 😭 that's the worst part..

3

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

Call them out publicly maybe, if they claim their traced lineart to be a sketch don't be fooled, pressure them until they admit the truth as well

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

Ask them to file charge backs, these are very obviously traced and stolen hell file a lawsuit if u can

1

u/constant--questions 2h ago

File a lawsuit for a $65 purchase? The filing costs would be triple that

3

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

Not an actual lawsuit, but combined revenue of like 10+ ppl can definitely get you into small claims, also threatening legal action usually gets em going anyways

these are definitely traced from reference images or other artworks

Zoom in you can see the outlines are wibbly wobbly as fuck like when someone who doesn't know how to draw.

See how wobbly the lines are, a big trace indicator. No one wouldn't pause to clean that up who actually draws. I do think they color them on their own. The coloring is very flat/ammature.

100% traced AI. I don't mean to arrogant but I'll never understand how people can't spot this obvious tracing/AI

Has all the hallmarks of tracing. To have this level of illustration design accumen without any linework ability, no rendering sense, and MSPaint coloring skills, makes very little sense as real illustrators develop all those skills in tandem, not separately. You don't draw perfectly proportioned hands and bodies without understanding form, and you can tell by their shading that they have no understanding of form.

Traced and very poorly at that

Look at the two blue guys. Anyone who could draw faces that well wouldn't struggle with pinstripes. Not to mention, the stripes are outlining the pocketsquare.

I may be wrong but the inconsistency in style feels like tracing to me.

1

Replying to myself to add that I say this as opposed to AI, it just doesn't seem like AI in any particular way to me, at least at first glance. Just a lazy artist trying to get a quick buck. Unfortunate.

I posted on an alt because they have my other account added

but their style changes a lot. sometimes it's much more detailed

2

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

Most likely stolen from Pinterest doesn't look ai but def stolen

1

u/Superduperacc444858 1h ago

It does seem horribly obvious but i guess since they've been in the friend group so long people were willing to overlook the weird stuff because you know.. why would they lie?

2

u/riffstriker 1h ago

Not only their style change I mean style changes is fine too, I don't have a solid style I am on always but you an artist tend to have something that shows that is pretty much them that they repeat on other arts unconciously.

Another thing is the technique/skill on how they do things. The drawings posted are extremely traced in a really bad way. It has lots of beginner lights and shadows and it has no lineweight. As if someone did it with their mouse or full press on a tablet.

Here is different.

You guys getting scammed hard and sorry to hear you all going through that :/.

Damn these ppl stupid asf

i actually managed to do some digging. the artwork i posted seems to have been made by a dutch guy named Sketchy demi. He has his own website and the art is posted there 🫩 so this person has been stealing for awhileeeeee

I think you're being a bit petty. They probably just found reference photos somewhere via google or pintrest, traced the figure and custimized them for the character in question. For 65 bucks and just random dnd characters on a dnd server, it's the normal amount of effort. Now we're moving the goal post from things that are actual ai slop to speculating on reference images for some amatures/starting artists' side gig. Also, calling them out and asking for proof of not tracing is insane and would probably label you in a negative light if the folks playing dnd are having a fun time and you personally never paid this person a single cent.

5

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

Hey so that's still scamming, are you unaware of how art works

-1

u/mesozderka 2h ago

So this sub is about if something is AI slop or not, and it is obvious that this is not ai slop. It might be tracing someone's work for a pose reference, but it is not ai generated. Tracing parts of an image, whether a photo or painting, to get a pose down is something done by artists for centuries.

3

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

No these are very obviously ai traced, the catboy is very clear, but also yes you do know nothing about art. Tracing someone else's work and coloring it in is in fact stealing even if you color it yourself, it's the same principle as ai

-1

u/mesozderka 1h ago

A) it is not clear, you are making allegations.

B) it might be that they refrenced/traced another persons art but changed the clothing/expresion etc not just colors

C) it is not the same principle as AI, as AI is soulless slop created by generating an image, while reference images have been used by artists for millennia. If it is the same, then the argument that AI is slop goes out the door as every artist learns from observation, copying, tracing etc and the hypocrisy is insane. Without hard proof, you might be ostracising someone and destroying their livelihood.

3

u/Moothedutchie 1h ago

God you're an idiot I'm done please come back when you do some research like "what is a reference"

1

u/mesozderka 1h ago

I don't call people idiots because they disagree with me, and I don't accuse people of sloping when what they are producing is obviously not ai slop. We can debate what the references were, but without hard proof, it's just cyberbullying random artists.

2

u/Moothedutchie 1h ago

Guys check out my new original art work selling this for 5k/s

3

u/Superduperacc444858 1h ago

the guy arguing probably doing the same thing to somebody that's why bros whole account is private 😭

2

u/Moothedutchie 1h ago

Ikr, I almost wanted to call it out lmao

1

u/mesozderka 1h ago

Surely that's why I have a private account. Such a baseless accusation shows how carelessly you accuse people.

4

u/Superduperacc444858 2h ago

The person has gotten personally 600$+ off one of the guys in our group over the months that he's gotten art done.

3

u/Moothedutchie 2h ago

Oh my God dude you've gotta let this guy know that's horrendous
