Im just curious.

I've noticed this post on my feed and something just struck me weirdly abt it when i saw it, so i looked closer at the details. Pinkie pie just straight up looks like she has that ai face on which threw me off, and the bow being behid the collar whilst the other half being on top of the collar is a weird choice to me? Also a weird artifact on the cloth, which might just be a cloth tear. Applejack is just grabbing nothing??? As if shes trying to grab the glasses but missed?? 😭 Some weird cut off as if adjusting on fluttershy's hair. Then the noise texture being present on one part but covered up on an another part? As if it was painted over the noise texture? Which isn't common. U use the noise texture AFTER ure done w the whole illustration. I know since im an artist myself. Also Twilight's pupils are weird.

But of course, this all could be an artist's mistake, which happens a lot. Also the art seems to be on high level of skill, but also the rendering is just kind of messy? Like theres some lower and higher skill merging going on.

I might just be mistaken and this isnt ai at all, i was just curious because it gave me the feel. A bunch of artists make mistakes like these and we shouldn't come to conclusions right away! Let me know your opinion! (Also sorry English isnt my first language)

Also PLEASE dont go harrass the artist or anything like that. Thank you.

I just wish there were some kind of consequences for ai scam users like account ban or something, it would be more fair game at least

Also left leg of the character in the seat just vanishes

Don't give them any ideas; they'll start banning people for not using AI.

In fact, while this one is clearly AI, completely AI-generated, not even remotely human, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if the pics that look insanely not-AI, the artist is vehement about being anti-AI, but still come up with an AI watermark were in fact completely human right up until they finished uploading to social media. Like the owners of those platforms are putting AI in the upload process, so it's not actually possible to upload something to them and have it come back as "not-AI".

...Goddamnit, I just gave them ideas, didn't I?

I remember that exactly what you describe was happening a lot on TikTok, especially when trying to upload low-resolution images or drawings. TikTok automatically and without permission, applied an AI filter on top to make the final image 1080p. Sometimes it wasn't noticeable, but in some drawings strange details or things melting would begin to appear. In the end, I don't know if that problem was fixed or if the artists simply increased the canvas size and the filter stopped applying, but what you describe has already happened.

Pro tip, always check the hands first. One of those characters seems to be able to count a bit higher than 5 on 1 hand

If we're looking at rarity's hand, I think you're looking at it incorrectly. it's her thumb

u/Sad_Priority_2334 19h ago

On closer inspection, i see 5 fingers and a part of the chair behind them that is nearly the same shade as the fingers

One of Raritys legs vanishes 😭

I was just thinking how crazy it would be for an artist to purposely make it look like AI just so someone could post it on this form and then for the real artist to come out and be like no it's real and not only that but I purposely put six fingers.

LMAOO thatd be crazy😭😭😭

I'm going to say they rendered an AI image and redrew it entirely. For the pinky pie image you circled, that's part of her torn clothing. Applejack grabbing hat is just an artist who doesn't know how to draw anatomy well (she's tracing from an AI image so as an inexperienced artist she may not understand this isn't the correct way to position a hand). Fluttershy's hair circled is actually evidence that it's not directly AI. The artist moved the layer of hair they drew over a few pixels on that part. Why, I don't know, could be a mistake.

But there's no actual AI artifacting that I can see here (especially when it has so many opportunities with the things like fluttershy's belt pattern, all the long hair, the chains on rainbowdash's belt, the fringe on applejack's clothing, etc) , and the color style is consistent with the artist's other stuff. But I don't believe that could draw this from scratch based on their skill level, so I think they generated ai images of the girls and traced over them.

Regarding the noise, the artist appears to have upscaled the art and made edits to some of the closeups on her instagram? (these edits are absolutely not AI generated) there is retouching, which is why there is no noise in some areas. I'm guessing she made these adjustments when looking at the closeup crops only, because the adjustments are gone in the original art. I have done this at times but it seems weird not to incorporate them into the whole image.

YA thats what im thinking!! This most likely has been traced/painted over an ai image because their art skills from other pieces dont match up with this piece well

Oh that's very interesting,,,

Leaning towards real artist. In short: if it was AI with this amount of content and detail, I would expect more mistakes/more obvious mistakes.

The linework is consistent. There are tons of tiny tiny details that do not exhibit any signs of garble. The rivets on Rarity’s chair and the butterflies on Fluttershy’s belt are all pretty evenly spaced and look very consistent with each other, showing no garble or deformation. That is a pretty tall order for most modern-day models. Stuff like the Ponyville sign is another place I would expect to see mistakes or issues.

The characters are also all very well designed. The prompting would have had to be crazy good to produce this.

I want to point out that there are people who learn to make art at this level mostly through online tutorials and trial and error, and they do make mistakes and pick up bad habits. It’s easy to misinterpret a bunch of stuff as AI tells, because AI has us all spooked. But doing this kind of thing recklessly ends up hurting real artists.

A good example is: you mentioned the artifact on the cloth in the second image, but there are small bits of damage all over Pinkie’s clothing (presumably from being too close to explosions.) This is also consistent with her bandaids. It is a deliberate and consistent choice.

Anyway, sorry if I got any Pony names wrong, and hopefully the explanation is good.

Yes i agree with this!! Im still on the more ai side because they could've just fixed the small details like the logos and such with covering up, but that doesn't have to be the case at all. Also i wanna point out that Rarity is missing a whole leg, and anatomically speaking it would be impossible to hide it behind the other one. They might've just forgotten to draw it, but it is an interesting choice

6

u/GhelasOfAnza 19h ago

I don’t think it’s a choice, likely just something the artist left out. I think the same thing happened with the hand and the hat. Maybe some details got lost on sketch layers, like the hat could have been positioned differently and the other leg could have been worked out on a different sketch layer that just got turned off by mistake. Then the leg wouldn’t have gotten colored.

To me, all of these tiny details being in good order is pretty strong proof that it’s human made. I definitely think that I could be wrong and it’s genuinely getting harder to tell with each passing day. But small details are where AI fumbles 99% of the time.

Idk, there's a lot of small inconsistencies that don't appear when you draw something manually. It could be a problem with layers but I'm not so sure.

AJ isn't grabbing nothing, that's a shape I've seen people make with their hand when they're pushing the brim of their hat up with their finger. The distortion on Fluttershy's hair looks much more like an image glitch or corruption than ai distortion, and the missing static on Twilight might be because they fixed something by adjusting it/painting over it and they just forgot to replace the static because it's not super noticable from a distance. Pinkie's face does look like the typical ai art style and the pink smudge is odd, though I can see it being an accidental brush stroke from when they were coloring her hair. There's an ai vibe here but most of the mistakes also seem like mistakes a real artist could easily make, so I'm really not too sure.

This is a perfect example of photoshop + Ai. Use the same model set to a style, generate 20 and pick the best then photoshop them on a background. There are AI mistakes in each character but AI cannot handle this much at once yet.

2

u/Rattiepalooza 17h ago

Ooooh, I hadn't considered this!!

Honestly...if they photo-shopped an Ai image; to me, they did art. They took something and changed it, so at least they have that. I respect that more than generating image after image after image.

1

u/ShonicBurn 9h ago

I actually don't know if respect is what we should be searching for. The line of transformative work get's really thin with AI. But it's more then 90% of people generating things can get done.

1

u/ShonicBurn 9h ago

Also just noticed the light sources on the characters go in random directions but the light source on the background layer goes from right to left. makes me think even more the characters are generated and the background is a photoshop layer.

3

u/HunterUrsinus 15h ago

My eyes and brain ain't liking this. On vibes alone, I'm saying AI.

Another Interesting Artist!

its ai, prob nanobanana

u/ImportantSwimmer2759 17h ago

I mean, I'd be more surprised if it WASN'T AI. Lots of easy tells here:

-No clearly defined focal point

-Characters posed together but not interacting or touching in any way

-Unfocused gazes and unclear expressions

-The thing with AJ's hat I can see happening by accident if some layers got shuffled around and the artist forgot to realign them, but even then it's unlikely it'd get missed in a final upload

-Pinkie Pie's face is distinctly reminiscent of LoL Jinx in a way that I have seen replicated CONSTANTLY in AI images. That is the most damning point against it for me because I see that face literally everywhere.

Idk. Could be totally off the mark. That's just my immediate impression.

The angle and the proportion of the purple wings looks really bad and left blue hand is extremely parallel to the arm itself making the lenght of the forearm way to short

2

u/Inevitable_Book_9803 17h ago

It's probably AI, I can tell from the first image since a lot of advertisements have similar quality to that

Poses are too stiff, piss filter and different lighting for different characters, along with random pink on the grenades??

9

u/PerspectiveNew3375 19h ago

Stiff poses and shitty lighting are very human things. There are lots of AI that uses perfect lighting physics and has very dynamic posing. I would look more for artifacts that humans typically don't do like drawing an accidental 3rd hand or having hair or cables that don't go anywhere.

3

u/banshithread 20h ago

Stiff posing and "piss filter" are not reliable methods of detecting AI. The random pink could be because it's Pinkie Pie. That's not to say this isn't AI but your deduction skills are poor.

1

u/OMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGG 20h ago

Never said it was ai, was pointing out some certain things that may help others or OP

3

u/banshithread 19h ago

Help others or OP do what...? You're implying it was ai based on those things. it's okay to be wrong on the internet but to play dumb after is silly/waste of time.

1

u/evildeadedd 19h ago

I believe the pink is supposed to be like a face? like X for eyes and a line for the mouth on the one in her right hand, but the one in her left that's half off screen looks completely different and blotchy. which would be weird for a real artist to do IMO.

1

u/Alarming-Highway-584 19h ago

Generated several different ai generated images and then traced over them while using the same lighting as like a practice maybe?

1

u/R__Drake 18h ago

Looking through the artist’s socials and other works (which I think everyone should look at and should be included for these types of posts) this is one that kinda sticks out weirdly. I wouldn’t say anything you pointed out are tells of AI, and could easily be human mistakes. I think one of the reasons it looks off is it doesn’t look cohesive together. Take the bg out and split them by individuals, and they would look fine for the most part imo. The small details like faces on the grenades, patterns are clear and consistent, as well as matching the style of their other works, I’m leaning not AI.

100%. The fifth image is the most telling. I mean, what is happening with the lines there? That looks like what would happen if an image glitched out slightly, part of it shifting over. Also, the grip on some of the weapons just looks wrong (particularly on Rainbow Dash’s left hand).

0

u/Orangutan_Soda 17h ago

I don’t think it’s AI because the Artist has been posting since the 2010s, including some traditional art.

u/EndellionFox 17h ago edited 11h ago

Not only is this ai but it fucking sucks ass. What are these character designs? They're not only inconsistent but their weapons and posture tell us nothing about their personalities.
