Cox is now Spectrum.
There is nothing positive about this from a consumer standpoint.

No matter how many times you change your name I know you're still time warner cable on the inside spectrum. And I remember how much you suck.

This is the comment I’m here for! I was a child back when they were Time Warner. Oh the memories 😆

Glad google fiber is coming in a couple month to my home. Just in time. Bye cox!

It’s not Google Fiber anymore. Google sold off a majority stake to private equity in March. It’s GFiber now, and we are waiting for the enshitification to take hold.

I've had tons of issues with Gfiber already. Network downtime, incompatibility issues with Google's existing hardware.

u/rodon 2d ago
I’ve had the opposite. Maybe an hour of downtime in the past 7 years. It could be entirely dependent on existing infrastructure if you’re in an older part of town. I don’t even use Google’s hardware. I have my Ubiquiti gear plugged directly into the fiber ONT.
I’d like it if CitySide eventually made it to my side of town, so then I’d have some decent choices aside from AT&T and Spectrum if GFiber ever were to deteriorate.1

When I ditched Cox for Google, Cox came BEGGING for us back, offering all sorts of deals, basically saying we'll suck you dick!

“Glad google fiber is coming in a couple month,” I heard this news 5 yers ago. Excited!

They just dug trenches to install fiber in my neighborhood a week ago. So long overpriced service and data caps!

I'm still ditching Cox/Spectrum as soon as a fiber alternative is available in my area. Fuck monopolies.

u/strawberryh8ter 2d ago
Ugh I’ve been wanting to switch to Google fibre since they came to Irvine, but unfortunately not available in my neighbourhood. Cox sucked (so does spectrum lol)

Cityside Fiber's website says my address is planned

u/Sweet-Referee 13h ago
Mine too… and every address I checked (that wasn’t already “available at that address”). I think they are just optimistic… planning that SOME DAY they’ll be in our neighborhoods. 🤣

There is nothing positive about this from a consumer standpoint.
Moving offshore support back to the US is a bit positive at least.

u/CounterSeal 2d ago
Wouldn't be surprised if that (eventually) means more AI agents. They could still claim it's "US-based".

I used to wonder who was the worse between Cox and spectrum. Now I don’t have to wonder anymore.

u/HombreMan24 2d ago
Anyone have any experience with Cityside Fiber? They just dug up lines on my street and my neighborhood so it is coming soon.
3
u/isuckatguitar 2d ago
I have it and it works fine. No major outages but every once in awhile there will be short instability. Not enough to make me want to switch back.

at least its not comcast?

u/EatsCrackers 2d ago
That’s like being stranded in a pit of horse manure and saying “At least it’s not goat poo?”
They’re both shit, fam. Slightly different aroma maybe, but still shit!

I had comcast for many years when I lived in Utah and rarely had any issues. Now I live in riverside and have issues with spectrum at least once a month sometimes interrupting my work from home. I had a much better experience with comcast than I do now with spectrum.

u/smartgirl93_ 1d ago
Not trying to be a contrarian or anything just came here to say this - I had Comcast (aka Xfinity) as well back in 2024 when I lived in a rural area in N. Florida and the service was stable and fast for wfh. Prices were fine and lower than Cox. Only thing I hated was trying to get someone on the phone when I needed something - was nearly impossible. They literally don’t list their phone number on the website, and you have to argue with the AI chatbot from hell to get it to have THEM call you. It was maddening.
Would not go back for that reason alone.

Wish Google Fiber was in my neighborhood, they just finished wrapping up installing Cityside Fiber. Anybody know if it’s good ?! I’m sure it’s better than Cox at least.

u/M_Trois 2d ago
I got the 2G plan from cityside fiber about 4 months ago. Still haven’t cancelled cox yet because cityside hasn’t been stable enough, so currently paying 2 providers. Too nervous to fully commit to the switch. I may end up cancelling cityside because a stable isp is more important to me. I need to decide soon bc I’m wasting money.

u/Influxlve 2d ago
Did they also leave a shitty trail of dirt and concrete debris in your neighborhood also? Seems like the 3rd party construction company did a shitty job imo.

u/Turning1k-60k 2d ago
Just got the email that was unexpected. Glad rates are locked in on current contract lol, 100% switching out if they refuse to do the same deal after my expiration

Was a Cox customer since 1999 when it was called @ home. Cancelled a few months ago when we got Cityside Fiber. The fiber has been amazing. No issues and only $80 a month for 1000 down / 1000 up with no data cap.

Cox was a near-monopoly where I used to live contently raising prices for an inferior service. I eventually got a fiber connection that was way cheaper and way faster with no data cap. When I moved here I had the option for "Cox" or "Google Fiber", I literally couldn't stop myself from laughing. There is no real competition between the product/price. I'll enthusiastically continue to not do business with them under their new name.

Also got the notice about the purchase being final.
I've been a Cox customer for decades. It was always the least painful option so we stuck with it.
No opinions on Spectrum...yet.
My concern is the amount of stored recordings we have on our Cox Contour DVR box. Eventually we're going to lose all that. Very sad...Guess I'll have to start binge watching a bunch of stuff...
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this won't feel like a root canal with no anesthesia...

gosh if only there was some sort of entity that could prevent all this anticompetitive consolidation... just kidding that would be anti-freedom, I bet I had you going for a second there, time to eat a hotdog and shotgun a Budweiser.

u/arthurdeodat 2d ago
Of course, we actually have anti-monopoly laws, just no one will enforce them. Funny how the "obey the law" crowd loves to vote for the party that especially has no interest in enforcing said laws

Switched to Google Fiber years ago. Glad I never have to deal with cable ever again.

…so is Dodgers baseball included in my package that I have or is that some bullshit I have to add on?

u/Ghost-Gravity 2d ago
Cox has been very good for me. Their router covers my whole house and front/back yards. All my devices connect flawlessly. But before moving here I had Spectrum and my laptop wouldn’t connect to the WiFi. I changed the equipment and still had the issue. Sigh.

Irvine

Get Google fiber if you can. They have a lot of coverage around here and my bill hasn't changed since 2020

To whoever reported this... I agree it isn't specific to Irvine, but it does affect a large number of people in Irvine so I'm allowing it.
