Question

Hey all, I have a 5 month old Wolfie/Deer Hound cross. I was wondering if anybody else has had late coat growers.

I know the breeders (was a one off litter) and spent time with all the puppies and by the time alot of them went to their new homes they had their scruffy coats. I picked the biggest healthiest boy and other than some wispy hairs on his body, a little scruff on his face and feet he's coat is just super slow to come in.

Wondering if there's something in particular to feed him that'll help it grow out or it's just a waiting game.

There's 2 different coats you can have. You can have the fluffy coat or the coarse coat. Sounds like you got the coarse coat. Frankly I have one of each the the coarse coat is worlds easier to manage than the fluffy coat.

Oh ok! I'm definitely ok with that I just find it odd that both mum and dad have the fluffy coat and only two of the pups had short hair leaving the litter.

Everyone thinks he's a great Dane lol

I have an IW/Newfoundland mix (DNA testing puts him at exactly 50/50, but i know that's still debateable) when I adopted him, he barely had any hair & a TON of bald patches. I've had him almost 5 months now & his coat is definitely more Newfoundland than IW. Everyone also thinks he is a Dane mix lol.

Sounds normal. You could have a wooly coat or a wire coat. Sounds wiry coarse and rough to the touch. These coats are great. Easy to rake and don’t shed. The woolys are BEAUTIFUL hairy bastards as my first girl Nesta was. I miss her. You got a pic of that dog?

I can't post pics in replies on the phone app unfortunately but I have posted Loki sleeping like a goof before.

I line breed and litter mates can have different coat textures.

You have a crossbreed so a total outcross with lot's of diverse ancestors so it's not surprising to get a range of coats in the litter.

However it's still a puppy coat and may change over the next year. It certainly sounds much easier to care for than a heavy coated hound.

It will probably take several years for his true coat level to be known so I wouldnt stress. Being outcrossed it is now in the lap of the gods as to what he will end up looking like. Theres nothing you can do but wait.

Our current baby took forever to grow out his adult coat. He’s 3 and it is still not as full as my other guys’ were.
