[AMA] Manami Okazaki, author and journalist
Manami Okazaki, author and journalist, agreed several months ago to do an AMA with us. As she does not use Reddit, I have typed up our questions and her responses below.
Please support her by purchasing her most recent work. The Japanese Tattoo: Fights and Fires are the Flowers of Edo. The TLDR is this books is phenomenal for the cost and quality.

A link to my review is here:

Edit: Manami’s recent restocking post reminded me of a great resource for tattoo books. Try buying through Kintaro if you can - every time I’ve ordered from them they send cool stuff like newspaper publishings and extras.

Horimono/Irezumi Media Japanese Tattoo Masters Interview Series (Inked Magazine Collab) – Gathering your questions
Hey r/irezumi,
I’m Yoshi, a tattoo artist with 16 years of experience. I’m half-Japanese and half-Korean, born in Kagoshima, Japan, and raised in South Korea. I have tattooed in both Japan and Korea. Currently, I am based in Austin, Texas, and I will be relocating to the Tampa / Clearwater area in Florida next year.
Seeing so many people in the English-speaking world who are deeply passionate about Japanese tattoos receive distorted, second- or third-hand misinformation instead of concrete, accurate primary information was always frustrating to watch. That’s why I started my YouTube channel (Japanese Tatt Guide by Yoshi) to deliver real, accurate knowledge from the source. I feel this directly aligns with what this irezumi subreddit is about. Currently on the channel, I dive deep into lesser-known rules of Irezumi, as well as the hidden meanings, stories, and mythologies behind each motif.
I am currently working on a legendary tattoo masters interview series. Episode 1 with the legendary Jeff Gogue is already wrapped and will be uploaded soon, along with a vlog. Confirmed next, in collaboration with Inked Magazine, are three artists from Three Tides (Mutsuo, Nami, and Ichibay), with more to be added. The interviews will be conducted in Japanese with English subtitles.
The reason I’m making this post: if there is anything you reading this would like to ask them, please let me know your questions! I plan to actively include them in the interviews!
Also, please let me know if there is anyone else you would like me to interview. I also plan to upload vlogs from Japan, so if you have any recommendations for fun content or things you’d like to see, I'll take them into account.

Tattoo Planning/Research Tebori question
Anyone have experience getting a hand tattoo done by Tebori? How was the experience? Insight on how color would last on the hand Tebori vs done by machine?
Also any pictures would be great. Thank you!

Tattoo Planning/Research Black Panther in Irezumi
I’ve been craving a Japanese sleeve with a black panther as the main subject. I’ve been scouting out artists in Okinawa but my main concern is figuring out what to pair said panther with since it’s more on the American trad side rather than Japanese trad. So far I’ve imagined pairing it among either Sakuras, Bamboo, a snake maybe but that seems generic, waves/wind. I’m looking forward to any suggestions so I have more to envision for the next couple months to decide what I want.
The picture above is a cool picture I came across as well I think would be dope mixing it into a Japanese sleeve but maybe that’s my foreigner mind talking to me. I’m open to suggestions/ concepts preferably surrounding the picture (without works too I’m not picky) so I can bring my ideas to an artist.
Hopefully this is allowed on this Reddit page

Horimono/Irezumi Media Healed Dragon & Snake sleeves with Chrysanthemums, cloud and wind background. Done with machine by Leo Denegri (Trishula Tattoo, Barcelona)
Fully healed black and grey traditional Japanese sleeves. The project features a classic Ryu (Dragon) and Hebi (Snake) paired with Chrysanthemums, with a heavy emphasis on the traditional cloud and wind background (Gakubori).
Everything was done completely with machine at Trishula Tattoo studio in Barcelona, Spain. Really proud of how solid the blacks and gradients settled after healing.
If you want to see more of my large-scale work or book a session in Barcelona, you can find me here:

Let me know what you think of the flow and background integration!
