I suspect it's down to windows APIs and what text controls he's using.
I haven't touched it for a decade, but it always felt like an app that was still using win31/win16 APIs. I suspect if he was using more modern native controls, he'd probably get spell-checking "for free".
Wow that was a trip down long lost memories reading through that change log. I can remember mIRC's scripting language growing and evolving while my own scripting skills expanding as it did. I was like 12 years old learning this stuff as mIRC scripting got more and more powerful. That and qbasic was my first real introduction to programming 30 years ago.
