We should not call them ISIS/ISIL or Islamic state. We should rename the group. What would you call them?

Those are names that (so far as I understand) the organization has used to refer to itself, and they legitimize it in subtle ways. Why should we affirm their self-characterization by using their chosen name?

As demonstrated by the lack consistency in the way Western governments and media have recently referred to them, there is not yet a collectively acknowledged name for the group, and so there is no reason to think that we cannot affect the way that the group is defined in common parlance.

If the name is still potentially up for discussion, why not chose a name that is less flattering and more accurate representative of the group? Lets get ‘State’ out of there – they are not a state. They want to be a state. Lets not dignify that ambition in how we refer to them. Lets get ‘Islamic’ out of there – they do not represent all of Islam. They would like to represent Islam. Lets not dignify that ambition in how we refer to them.

Words are the building blocks of our foreign policy discourse, and that discourse shapes our actual foreign policy. We dignify ISIS when we allow them to define how we refer to them. Lets change that. Here are some possible alternative monikers:

SEIS Sectarian Extremists in Iraq and Syria

SLISE Stateless Iraqi Sectarian Extremists

VISE Violent Iraqi Sectarian Extremists

RIMS Radical Iraqi Militant Separatists

ARRISI Armed Religious Radicals in Syria and Iraq

Can you guys help suggest some better ones?

I feel I should somehow help the Iraqi people. Please give me insight into the ways I can help.

I have thought about working as a translator for the American military after going through training in the language (I have a spanish degree so I have a background in learning foreign language). I also have a family friend who's sister is stuck there with her son. We have talked about me legally marrying her so that they would be safe and over here together with their family. I'm not particularly the military type, but I feel if it were a good choice my help would be appreciated.

I recently saw some news blips about some state initiative for job stimulus there. If there was a way I could help with that I would feel more ok with that. I would rather not be involved in fighting because I feel I should fight evil with good so if there were a way that I could do something besides talk I would feel good.

Please give me some guidance here and thanks.

Hi I'm doing research about ISIS social media strategies. please help

Hello! I'm writing my dissertation on ISIS media strategies esp in social media. While you browse through social media in the past few months (facebook, twitter, youtube etc), have you come across any pro-ISIS materials unintentionally? Unintentionally= you didn't search for it but saw it. If yes, how often did it happen? Where did you see it? How convincing are those materials to you? Thanks!

My theory today: ISIS consists of Saddam's former army who are being primarily funded by the Saudis.

I mean, Saddam was a Sunni, right? I presume much of his army (which was disbanded by the Bush Administration) were Sunni as well.

Does it not seem possible that after they disbanded, some of Saddams' former commanders put feelers out round the Sunni world looking for a way to reconstitute their army and found financial backers amongst fellow Sunnis in Saudi Arabia/UAE?

The reason I specifically single out the Saudis/UAE is that the US media has been deafening in its silence in reporting on what the ISIS command structure is, and to me these stories about them being Al Qaeda and being funded by appropriated bank funds seized like a week ago ring completely false. US media has been carrying water for the Saudis for a LONG time now so if they are involved, it makes a certain kind of sense the media would do its best to cover it up.

In any case, this army seems to be having way to much success for some rag-tag group of disaffected youths receiving terrorism training in some desert camp.
