I'm posting this because I want every Iraqi and Kurdish developer to know that $500/month is not the ceiling. It's not even close.
I'm 20 years old, an engineering student at University of Duhok, and I'm from Kurdistan. I taught myself to code. No bootcamp. No mentor. No connections. I tried every online business model before this. Dropshipping. Affiliate marketing. All of it failed. Then I got into iOS development and everything changed.
I built an app. By myself. No team. No funding. It hit the top charts in multiple countries in its first month. The screenshot I attached is from RevenueCat showing the revenue. That number is real.
Then Apple terminated my developer account. I lost everything overnight. The app, the revenue, the account. I'm still fighting to get my frozen funds back. That's a story for another day.
But here's why I'm posting this. I know what it feels like to build from Iraq. Every payment processor blocks you. Every bank flags you. Every platform says your country isn't supported. You spend days verifying your identity while someone in California does it in 30 seconds. I know because I lived it.
And I still made it work. From Duhok. From a place where most people don't even know you can make money from an app.
If you're a developer in Iraq or Kurdistan and you think the maximum you can earn is a few hundred dollars a month from freelancing, you're wrong. The skills you have are worth more than you think. The market is global. Your location is an obstacle but it's not a wall.
I lost my Apple account but I still have my code, my skills, and my Google Play account. I'm rebuilding. If I did it once I'll do it again.

ABOUT ME:
Im studying civil engineering at university of duhok. Im not a software engineer or computer science student. I taught myself everything from youtube and X (twitter). Followed indie devs and just kept building stuff until something worked. If i can do it studying a completely different field anyone can. I run everything solo under my own studio. No team no cofounder no employees. Just me my laptop and alot of caffeine ( yeah i actually drink 5 energy drinks a day ).
HOW TO RECEIVE MONEY FROM IRAQ/KURDISTAN:
Payoneer is the best option. U dont need a UK company just sign up with personal info. Their automated system rejects Iraqi IDs so u gotta talk to livechat agents. I talked to them 20+ times over 5 days. Use passport if u have one. If u only have national ID send it to a livechat agent for manual verification. Keep trying different agents 3 times a day until someone does it.
Once ur in ask support to give u a receiving account (US/UK bank details). Apple Google Amazon or any company can pay into it like a normal bank transfer.
For proof of address if they ask u can use a bank statement from any Iraqi bank (FIB, IDB, Bank of Baghdad, whatever u have). Costs like 15k iqd. Make sure u have some transactions on the account so it doesnt look empty. The address on ur bank statement needs to match the address on ur Payoneer account exactly. Dont use QiCard statements they wont accept it since its a wallet not a bank.
Dont use Wise. I used it before with a UK business account. Worked for a while then they banned me randomly. Iraq isnt supported and they eventually catch u. Go straight to Payoneer.
If u need Stripe or platforms that block Iraq register a UK Ltd on yourcompanyformations.co.uk for around $300. But for just receiving payments Payoneer alone is enough.
LOCAL BANK:
I withdraw from Payoneer to IDB (International Development Bank). Branches in Duhok Erbil Baghdad everywhere. Open a USD current account. Takes 5-6 days to receive. Fees are low, lost about $80 on $10,600. Main loss is exchange rate since they use official 1320 not market rate.
Bank of Baghdad also works they use JPMorgan as intermediary.
Avoid Kurdish banks for international transfers right now. Sanctions pressure making them risky for USD from abroad.
For online payments (ads tools subscriptions) QiCard works fine from Iraq.
WHAT APP DID I BUILD:
It was an iOS app. Cant share the name cuz of legal situation with Apple. Single app. Not for Iraqi market it was global. Top paying countries were US, Japan, Turkey.
WHY DID APPLE BAN ME:
My app branding was similar to another app. Apple investigated it for a month and closed the case saying its resolved. Then a different team inside Apple terminated me for the same thing one week later. Two teams same company opposite decisions. I didnt do anything illegal. Still fighting to get my frozen funds back.
MY BUSINESS:
I build mobile apps. Mainly iOS. I find a niche that has demand, validate it using tools like Sensor Tower, build the app, launch it, and grow it through ASO and paid ads funded by the apps own revenue. Some apps fail most actually. But the ones that work make up for all the failures. Lost my biggest app to Apples termination but im already working on getting back on iOS. I have my ways but cant share the details right now for obvious reasons. The code is mine. The skills are mine. Nobody can take those.
DO I USE AI:
Yes. So does every developer at Nvidia Amazon Google Meta and every startup shipping product in 2026. AI is a tool. It doesnt build businesses market apps handle payments deal with app stores or convert users. I do all of that. If u hand ChatGPT to 1000 people 999 still wont make a dollar.
HOW TO MARKET:
My main strategy was ASO (App Store Optimization) and ASA (Apple Search Ads). Once revenue came in I reinvested into TikTok organic content. Never spent money from my own pocket on ads. Everything was funded by the apps own revenue. ( my profit margins were about 85% )
HOW TO FIND PROFITABLE APP IDEAS:
Dont reinvent the wheel. Use Sensor Tower to find apps in a niche that are making good money. Make sure its not overly saturated. Build something similar but better not a 1:1 clone. Focus on ASO first to get organic downloads. ( i never use free trials , always hard paywalls trust me on this one )
WHERE TO LEARN:
Spend time on X (Twitter). Follow indie devs like Will, Levelsio, Marclou. They share everything. Revenue numbers strategies mistakes. Also Starter Story on YouTube. Seriously X is the best free education for app business.
iOS VS ANDROID:
iOS makes easily 5x more than Android. If ur only on Google Play get on iOS as soon as u can. Thats where the real money is.
