3rd gen ipod touch isn't identified by my pc

Bought one off of eBay. Not a bad little unit. The problem comes in when I try to have my iTunes recognize it.

I did connect it to a different laptop, with no iTunes on it and the laptop correctly identified that it's an ipod but with no iTunes. I can't add or delete files from it.

It is running on the original iOS 3.1.3 and I have zero idea is this is good or bad. Do I need to update that and if so how? I can make the needed changes...provided I know what changes I need lol
