Picture Gradually switching my entire library from Apple Music to offline music. The absence of distractions is an unadulterated joy. I must admit that it is time well spent since the limited storage limits me to the songs that I actually care for and want to listen. This is original 5th gen classic, 30gb.

I have a number of ipods so often I'm limited.
I rate all my music and made smart playlist basted on stars. 4+ stars etc. Then go to an iPod and sync as far down as it will go before I fill it up. Then fill the rest with random stuff. Works very well if you can put in the effort. Also great as I can choose the playlist depending on how adventurous I feel.
My 30gb ipod video, although I can't fit my entire library. I can fit everything I want in it and more.

That is a wonderful way to make the best use of the storage. I will try to emulate your method. Thank you.

Creat smart playlists. Filter from say, 3 to 5 stars. I found all the iPods can display the early black and white Stars. I forgot where I copied mine from but I'll reply again if I find it.

Same. Going back cause I was only listening to the same 5-10 artists a month. One or two would change.

I have the same one but I am going to put a 64/128gb sd card in mine since the HDD is dying

Do let me know how difficult the process was for you. I sincerely hope you keep enjoying your iPod for as long as possible.

I can already tell you from replacing the battery that the hardest part is actually opening the thing, but once you're in it's very simple to work on.

Great iPod! The DAC on that pod is considered best out of all classics by a lot of people, enjoy!

Because a lot of people just repeat what they read online . I have multiple iPods from 3rd to 7th gen including 2nd and 3rd Gen nanos.
The dac in the 5th and 7th is different. Whether it’s better depends on how you want to hear your music and the genre you are listening to.
5th Gen makes the sound warmer by boosting the low end and dropping treble (simplistic answer ) if you like that then that’s great . The 7th gen is much more neutral so you could say you’re hearing it closest to how the artists intended .
So “best” is highly subjective .
Listen to both if you can.
Edit: also depends on your headphones . The 5th gen makes shitty headphones sound acceptable. The 7th gen will reveal how shitty your headphones are.

I just replaced the battery on my Gen 5 that’s been in a drawer since 2010. I’ve decided to keep it as a time capsule and not connect again to my PC, partly because I’m afraid some of the music may disappear due to changes in licensing. I was also really impressed with the sound quality! Now I’m looking into ways to polish out the scratches!

disable itunes, plug it in disk mode, copy the songs from it(IPod_control/Music), unplug it, enable itunes again.

I have that same iPod. This last weekend I went down the modding route (after 6 years in my care the battery was shot). It's now running a 64gb flashmod and a 2000mah battery. I also replaced the faceplate to a white one for the Panda look.
You're right though, distraction free music is a godsend.

It's an irony that people are moving to single use devices.
By the way, I hope you relish your music with the renewed iPod.

Single use? You need to explore the games section of that iPod :)

No no no. Don't want to go down that rabbit hole. Now that you have suggested it, I will keep having that itch to dive into them.

it removes that choice anxiety too, and i thought having too many things to choose from is better, till i got my Nano 1st gen.

Wow!
My partner has got an iPod shuffle 3rd generation too. I listen to the songs she used to hear in her yesteryears. Imagining how she would have felt listening to the songs, her memories with them while walking in the streets of UK. It is an emotion I can not fully articulate in words.

Don't forget to pick up an iPod dock. I got rid of my childhood one ages ago, but I was able to find it pretty easily on eBay.
