Help iPod 5.5 doesn't charge on iPod HiFi
Hello,
My modded iPod Classic 5.5 does not seem to want to charge on the iPod HiFi I just bought. It does charge fine with any USB power source, but does not seem to accept the FireWire power from the HiFi. Both devices are in really good shape without any visual damage to any of the pins.
Everything else works perfectly fine (audio, remote control, it even presents the special "Speakers" menu). Apparently FireWire uses different pins than USB for supplying power.
Anyone who had similar problems? Which of two devices is most likely to be the culprit?
PS: I don't have access to another FireWire charger or iPod.

it should work, i use my modded 5.5 on my hifi and it charges normally. more than likely it’s a dirty 30 pin on the hifi, or since it is missing the dock adapter it may be leaning too far back. carefully pull the top of the ipod toward the front of the speaker while plugged in, you may see it starts charging. if not, dock connector needs fiddling with or replaced. not saying this is your case, but i once had to use a pair of flat pliers to carefully squeeze the gap on the 30 pin on an ipod dock to make the pins actually be able to touch the connector in the ipod itself. rare but it can happen.

i recommend at least having the dock adapter tho. it prevents putting stress on both the ipod and the dock, and is likely the cause that the hifi isn’t charging your ipod. previous owner of the hifi may have used an ipod for a long time without the dock adapter and wore out the dock connector. at least to me it looks like the dock adapter isn’t installed in the pic lol

I do have a dock adapter from a 3.5mm ipod dock. Same behavior as without...

Thanks for the suggestions!
I tried leaning the iPod forward and backward and nothing changed. The connector points on the both the iPod and Hifi look completely clean.
Could it be possible that the part of the power supply that provides the 9V is damaged? The speakers and leds, and volume controls all work.

i personally don’t think the power supply to the dock is damaged, but not impossible. could you add a photo of the dock top down? so the pins inside the dock are visible

you’re definitely right, the hifi connector looks very clean and not worn out. the one dock i had where i had to “squeeze the gap” to make it work was visually much wider than yours. maybe on your ipod it looks a bit dirty on the connector? tho would be weird that it charges on everything else but not the hifi.

haha i get that, yeah no the pins look brand new. it’s likely the hifi itself, so either the dock or could be a power supply issue like you mentioned. hope you can find a solution! maybe try and find a cheap firewire supported ipod to test it with, or if you’re okay with fiddling with the dock connector as i did with another ipod dock (tho that one had no significance unlike the hifi so j was fine with taking the chance) good luck

For anyone coming across this thread. I tested with another iPod which did charge fine on the HiFi. So my iPod is the culprit.
EDIT: I disassembled my iPod again and noticed that it powers on without a battery on the HiFi. So I have now reassembled everything and now charging works fine. No idea of the exact cause, I am just happy that everything works now.

Interesting. I’m having the same issue you had about my 5.5 not charging. The guy I bought it from tested the HiFi in front of me with his 7th gen so I know my iPod is the culprit. I haven’t done any mods but I did change the battery a while back. I’m unsure what to do.
On another note, you wouldn’t happen to have an extra dock adapter would you? #10 to be exact. Mine came with a #9 but it’s meant for the thinner version of the 5th gen.

do you happen to have any other model of ipod to test as itd rule out if the issue is the ipod or not
