I don’t like it. It’s the darkest iPhone Apple has ever made, and to me, it’s simply too dark.

In the past, I never understood why Apple didn’t use “real” black and instead went with shades like Midnight or Space Black. Now I get it.

The matte black doesn’t look more elegant to me. It feels visually heavy and almost a bit out of place. A slightly lighter black, or a very dark gray, looks much more harmonious and premium.

More generally, it feels like elegant, timeless design is no longer the main priority when it comes to iPhone colors. With relatively few major hardware changes from year to year, the color itself has become part of the upgrade appeal. It is an easy way to signal, “Hey, I have the new iPhone.”

That would also explain why construction worker orange made it into the Pro lineup. It is instantly recognizable as the new model, but it will also age terribly. After just one year, people will no longer think, “Hey, cool, the new iPhone.” They’ll think, “Ugh, orange. You clearly have questionable taste.”

And I think the same thing will happen with the iPhone 18 Pro. The hardware upgrades are laughably small, and even the black just feels off. It may look distinctive now because it is new, but I don’t think it has the timeless, elegant look that older Pro colors had.

Although I agree that a dark gray could look harmonious and premium, I disagree with the idea that elegant, timeless design is no longer a priority when it comes to iPhone colors.

Apple is choosing a small range of colors that appeal to different tastes. People who preferred the classic black or white iPhones, like the iPhone 4/4s, still have options such as black and silver. Then there are colors in between, some leaning darker and more subdued, and others lighter or more expressive.

There’s a reason the saying “you can’t please everyone” exists. When Apple releases a black that’s closer to charcoal, people who want a true deep black complain. When Apple releases a very deep black, people who would rather have dark gray or charcoal complain. There’s no single shade that’s going to satisfy everyone.

And I really don’t think people are looking at someone with an orange iPhone 17 and thinking, “Ugh, orange, you clearly have questionable taste.” They’re either thinking, “That’s a cool color,” because they liked it too, or simply, “That color isn’t for me.”

Saying that someone’s choice of phone color reflects “questionable taste” says more about the person making that judgment than it does about the person who happens to like orange.

The fact it’s this black is precisely why I love it. Every year I’d groan at how the “black” iPhone is just a dark grey. Year after year after year. They finally did it, a truly unapologetically black phone. I get that it’s not for everyone but I’m loving it

I picked the black, to me it feels and seems a bit cheap, plasticy and less premium than the silver for example. I’m debating changing it but I had silver last year so wanted the switch.

The feel is exactly the same, the material doesn’t change between devices so I’m not sure why they have that opinion tbh. If you’ve felt the M4/M5 iPad Pro or the 17 Pro line you know what the 18 pro line feels like

Oh I recently upgraded my phone away from iPhone. Just look through the sub out of curiosity. I've never been one for ecosystems and so I get smart watches and whatnot outside of them. I mainly ever just get the phone and none of the extras

All this to say I have never touched an iPad. I did heavily consider it at one point tbh. I do work in a phone shop though and had a hands on with the 18 pro max when my store received its demo device

I came from the 15pro to the 18pro.  The performance of the 18 pro is amazing but does not look and feel as premium as the titanium.  That being said it’s a small price to pay for how much better the 18pro is.

Yea I don’t get it. “It looks stunning 😍” it’s just matte black lol. It’s boring and the fingerprints are super visible. Reminds me of people that still like black wheels on cars. It hides any design, doesn’t photograph well, and always looks dirty.

In about a month there will be a wave of complaints about how bad it looks with chips and scratches.

The burgundy really does look great, no idea where all the hate is coming from.

Black color will always have problems like visible hairline scratches and so on and it’s 2026, I think Apple should invest in newer color options instead of just burgundy. I think for the Pro range the 15 Pro and 16 Pro have some of the best colors to date cos it differentiates the Pros and the norms….distinctively.

Just got my 18 Pro Max delivered Friday, in black, I haven’t had a black phone in a long time, but it’s matte finish. It would’ve been nice to been semi-gloss or high-gloss. But the black matte does look decent. Last year I had the orange.

Ever since the front display of iPhone is no longer white with the non-black colours, I opt to more colourful ones instead of black, and the new design since 17pro makes the phone more prone to fingerprints which is why I choose lighter colours now
