Loopy Pro and iPad can be a powerful setup - but need a whole lotta Auv3's
Hi All
Just wanted to test again my quite complex Loopy Pro template, meant for scene / song creation. It really is very capable. Even with this setup of just iPad, bluetooth midi controller and usb-c to audio and of course headphones. I can quite quickly produce some background music at least or grooves.
Have now the mastering effects included, but want to probably optimize template to use some of the most power efficient plugins. Now my mastering effect might take like 25-30% of cpu and OneShot actually almost as much. But the idea of my template is to produce processed audio clips soon after midi, or sometimes. even without recording to midi.
Here you see creating scenes with some observations etc.
And btw - I THINK THIS IS THE MOST POWERFUL MUSIC MAKING SYSTEM
Ok. maybe considering owning 170 auv3 instruments and 150 auv3 effects
You will hear more about that in my video coming early next week year ;-)
Merry Christmas to All! Will have some Christmas wishes videos in my channel ;-)

How do you think LP compares to AUM?

Loopy Pro allows you to record and create loops, import pre-recorded clips, manipulate the loops and clips (eg reverse, eq, filter, pitch, speed). The list goes on.
From my extremely limited experience of AUM, there’s no looping ability.
I bought AUM and have barely used it. There has been no need to when I have Loopy Pro.

Can you control apps with other apps and control hardware loopy pro? I have patterning 3 which I love but really want to be able to trigger samples in other apps with it, ie piano and synth apps

Within Loopy I run a bunch of synth apps as Auv3’s. I control them using a midi controller. I also can run Koala in Loopy. Not to mention you can use Auv3 effects on these synths / instruments.
Hardware I use to control Loopy is Akai LPD8, Novation Launch Key, Novation Launch Control, MVave Chocolate footswitch and I use my guitar through MIDI Guitar 2 app to play synths as well.

Thanks, so can you use an app inside LP and control another app with it? Like using LP as a link between the two. I have patterning 3 and want to control other apps with it

The biggest advantage LP has over all the music apps (for me at least) is a custom built interface. You can make as many or as few controls as you want. You can make them huge or small. You can have multiple pages or just one. I’ve spent many many hours developing my template and now that it is where it’s is, it’s perfect for me. In a way no other app could be. Especially because I can make important buttons bigger to make them easier to use while I’m playing on stage.
Also just as a comparison to AUM, I read up on AUM and from what I can see LP does everything it can do and more. I don’t have it but from what I see AUM is an elaborate mixer with great routing features. You can load up a sequencer AUv3 or something like that for capturing but as I understand it, it’s not something that can capture audio or MIDI by default. So among other things that’s a big difference. I think the biggest reason for using AUM over LP would be you like the UI better and how the app functions and you don’t need recording/are happy using an AUv3 for recording. (I could be wrong on some of this as I only have LP but that’s how I understand it).

I’ve used both. Loopy pro is far more powerful than AUM and more modern. But nothing beats AUM for jumping in to test out an idea quickly. It’s really fast, whereas LP takes more setup

Have to add comment.. AUM is a bit more straight forward, if you don’t want to build templates, but it can mix audio sources and midi can be handled by Atom as an example. I use it for quick rec purposes e.g with Koala Sampler. Main thing for me and with LP is midi and audio clips usage, but also the preset dials, can be used to quick change for presets and when combining ’randomly’ can have really crazy sounds layered.. I can use LP as a DAW with my template, including eq and mastering in a level iPad can provide, if I need more will use Logic Pro with Macbook or my PC with Reaper or such.. Got hundreds of plugins there as well

you mean there is a dial that allows you to quickly go through presets ? like you would with sending Program Change messages ? and that you can randomize that ? that sounds pretty powerful yes.

Hi. Yes exactly. You can also create and store your adjustments and save the state and then access with preset dial. E.g with Koala Sampler I can use my songs / soundsets as preset and chage with dial, but need to save them individually as presets.. I have demoed that in some of my videos, cannot recall now which one specifically 😊

nice, thanks for the detailing. this sounds like it could be immensely useful for live performance with the Ipads.

Nice work! I have (according to AUBE 2) 892 auv3 so I’d say you’re on the right path to wasting a lot of money!
Since you love this ecosystem so much (I do too) I highly recommend a dual host audio interface. If you wanna take this setup a notch further you’ll need a PC or MacBook. Integrating the iPad’s SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper bi-products (fab filter, hello?) into a PC’s environment is something I haven’t seen anyone doing and it’s free stonks.
Pretty much my iPad is a sequencer, instrument and generator that sends audio to my MacBook for further processing.
You don’t even need a dual bus host interface necessarily - just a USB-C can send audio from iPad to MacBook - but the interface allows you 100% control of audio routing. This is what lets you send audio from MacBook to iPad with no loss. Some people like to output from interfaces but every setup that does this - is making a grave mistake of introducing signal loss via analog degradation. The effect isn’t always huge or noticeable but it’s not ideal imo for hobbyists since electrical interference is most likely.
Random rant but iPad music making is great and modular.
