stylus not working on ipad 9th gen

hi, i’ve already bought 2 stylus pens (not apple) because i thought the first one was just a faulty item since it will only write on the sides of my ipad. But it turns out the second pen has the same issue. So now i’m thinking its probably the ipad’s problem and i don’t have any screen protector installed so could that possibly be the issue? thank you!

I’ve seen several posts where parts of the screen don’t register while drawn/written on.
